Sawflies are the insects of the suborder Symphyta within the order Hymenoptera alongside ants, bees and wasps. The common name comes from the saw-like appearance of the ovipositor, which the females use to cut into the plants where they lay their eggs. Great video. THANKS

This is one of my favorite excersises and find it really helps accuracy and finger coordination. I find once you master the basic "sawfly" that skipping strings is really important. Start with the say the low E and A and then next skip a string, low E and D and then low E and G etc. I'll even do low E to high E as skipping the strings REALLY helps solidifying right hand accuracy along with everything else. Highly recommend and I find it really fun to get loose with.

I think that's very similar to what Eddie Van Halen did when he played Eruption live back in 1978. There's a part he did which is very similar to this exercise, keeping it on the first 2 strings and moving up through the neck meanwhile speeding it up.

I call this the Dancing Spider when I play this across the fretboard, as it is kind of an expansion on the Spider. When I play this up (or down) the fretboard on a single pair of strings, I call it the Inchworm. I usually start out playing it (the Dancing Spider) across the fretboard, moving up one fret and going across the fretboard the other direction, in whole notes for three frets, half notes for three frets, triplets for three frets, and eighth notes for three frets. Then I do the Inchworm back down the neck: 8ths for three frets, triplets/three, half notes/3, whole/3. Great warm-up exercise.

Holy whole note scale! I definitely need to practice the 16th notes, I was embarrassingly bad at keeping up with you. I used to extend this by 1 fret, forcing me to reposition my fingers and I'd walk it back to start. I also go up to the 6th string, then I reverse the up/down fingering and walk it back to the high E. Thanks as always, Andrew! If my ship comes in, I'll definitely do more to support your channel.

You can expand this drill by skipping one string, that is playing on 3 and 1 for instance (and move it across the neck) and also by skipping more strings. Try other variations of the pattern as well: 1-4-2-3 and so on. In fact variations here are quite important so you don't embed only a small portion of fretboard paths into your muscle memory as every single variation explored on its own will develop finger independence to play passages in real musical situations. However - don't stay on this for too long. This is just a purely technical exercise... Scales are much more important from the musical perspective.

This exercise looks like the one I've been looking for. I've got to give it some diligent time.

I always called this one the zig-zag scale.. 😂 great vid man!

I'm surprised you didn't invert the pattern or skip another string so there's a string between the exercises 🤔 ah well, that's another vid i guess 😅

I would also start with downstroke and then change to start with upstroke picking.
