yes, money has always been part of the practice. cowries, beads, brass and coins are traditional currency that have been in use since antiquity.

i cannot speak about africans, but the yoruba have always incorporated money in every aspect of their lives. money is part of life. there is no spiritual/mundane division in our tradition. money is spiritual. money is a divinity, in fact.
