The connection between you and your pig is so cute and i recently have been wanting to train my Guinea pigs to make it easier to collect them for lap/run time while keeping them comfortable and happy around me as my piggies are only around a year old and are starting to feel more confident around me so I thought it will now be great to start training :)

Yes, a year old is the perfect time to start! I got most of my piggies around that age and they often learn quickly. :) It definitely helps to reduce stress and improve your bond too. Go in a carrier is very useful for me personally, as it makes it so much easier to catch them to bring them out or back to their cage. :)

If you want to train your guinea pig for higher jumps, do it like this: Take a box that is about twice the height of your guinea. I use my razer headset box. Make barriers around the box, so it would look like a runway with a big obstacle (your big mustn't be able to go around it). Sit down and place your guinda pig opposite of you. The box should br between you and your pet. Take something that your guinea pig loves (I used watermelon, dill and cucumber) and start luring your guinea pig to look up. The food has to be out of its reach, much higher. When your guinea knows that it's food, place it on the box's top or keep holding it. You can move it. Sooner or later, your pet will be jumping over really high stuff :).

Could I use these tips for a shy guinea pig? One of my pigs is outgoing and can learn these tricks but the other is too shy and pulls food away from my hand to eat (he runs far away with the food in his move and then eats it)

Yes, it will probably just take a bit longer. With the one that pulls food away, I would try switching to something that he can't pull out of your hand so easily (like a leaf of lettuce or a full size carrot) and just let him nibble on it while you hold it.

Do you’ve got any more tricks to get a New Guinea to get used to you? I’ve recentky gotten a guinea pig, but he’s super nervous when I move or get closer to him.

I always recommend hand feeding them veggies as soon as you can, but if he's too nervous for that right now, I would try taking him out of his cage as often as you can (I like to use a small carrier to move them instead of picking them up because it's less stressful for them.) Let him run around on the floor in a small room, or you can fence off a corner of the room so he can't disappear under any furniture. Sometimes it helps to just sit with them quietly so they learn that you're not a big scary monster. I also like to drape a blanket or towel over my leg and onto the floor so they can hide under the blanket right beside you (kind of like a tent.) Put some veggies under the blanket with them too, so they can eat whenever they start feeling more comfortable. Good luck with your piggy!

Hi, from what age could you start training piggies? Mine are now about 4 months old and still super tiny of course, but when do you think it is best to start training them like this? I do try to let them eat from my hand, but they're still quite scared in general and will run away if I am walking towards the cage.

I would just keep trying to hand feed them at this point. :) As soon as they're comfortable taking food from your hand, you can start some simple training and stuff. It's totally normal for babies to be skittish though, most of the time they chill out when they hit about a year old. :)

I’ve had my guinea pigs for 5-6 months and they still don’t let me pet them. Let alone holding them. I have a perfect cage, they get plenty of outside-cage time aswell. Unlimited access to the whole house (guinea proofed everything).... but when I try and pet them, they run away chattering their teeth. Please help. I can’t go on like this for another 6 years or however long they live.

You can teach them to accept petting by pairing it with food. It's how piggies learn best. :) Are your guinea pigs comfortable with taking food from your hand? That's always the first thing I focus on. After that, you can start gently stroking them while they're distracted with the food. If you can practice that every day just for a few minutes at a time, that should help. My piggies first learned to tolerate being pet using food, and eventually they learned that they actually enjoy being pet, with or without food around. :) However, I find that guinea pigs aren't typically cuddly or overly affectionate like a cat or dog.

They also love running under the blanket where my legs are when im sitting on the couch. Some months they let me pet under their chin ONLY and its for a couple seconds. But just recently they wont let me pet them at all... I will try using the Veggie Stix as a lure lol. Thx for the advice

Okay, that's good then! With my own pigs, I usually start with hand feeding, then sit on the floor and lure them onto my lap with treats. If you can get them to come onto your lap, I find that works even better. :) Once they become comfortable climbing onto my lap and eating veggies, I start with the gentle petting (often with just one finger at first lol.) I make that a daily thing until they start to relax and learn that petting isn't so bad. :) It has worked for all my piggies so far, and Ace was even a bit of a biter when I first got him. 😅 Good luck with the piggy taming! 😊

Yeah, it's tough when they are skittish! They can still catch on with lots of patience and repetition with super easy tricks. Sometimes with timid piggies, I'll spend time just hand feeding veggies, or teaching them to put their front paws on my hand or leg while I'm sitting with them to slowly build up their confidence.
