The Easily Amused Group's guide for the beginner Whovian.
The easiest way to see Doctor who is with a Netflix membership, most of the episodes are available as "watch now" and they offer the first month free.

Sorry but I totally disagree. You need to watch all of them! I mean you don't really get that connection with rose or Amy unless you watch all of them.

This is all such bad advice. The new series was meant to be watched in order. Otherwise you miss out on the subtle character development of The Doctor and and his friends. As well as the ongoing 'Time War' plot arc spanning the entire first five years. If you can't sit through the simple joys of 'Rose' then I feel bad for you. Maybe you're not the right fit for this show.

wow, judging kinda harshly, arentya? this video was meant for the person who knows nothing of the show at all, so many times I've heard people try to start on Rose and get so confused they turned it off, cause they were expecting things ti be explained as they would in a typical first episode. but when i showed them later eps they loved it, and went back and started on rose after decided they were going to be into it based on individual episodes. and each season has several stand alone episodes that dont really do anything to advance any sort of story arch or anything.

I started with "An Unearthly Child" and kept watching until I saw "The Husbands of River Song" (which was at that time the most recent episode). I know most people will not be able to especially while trying to watch the missing epsiodes complete with audio and telesnaps, but atleast it gave me an appreciation for the show as whole.

Interesting Video, I was curious what you would suggest. If anyone is interested, in how the show got started originally, back in 1963. The B.B.C. as part of the 50th Anniv., has made a "Docu-Drama". The origin of "David Tennent`s" "Dr.`s" famous last words from his tenure & the 50th Anniv, episode, are shown in this. It is called "An Adventure in Time & Space". (Watch Dr.Who, you will not regret it.)

I agree almost 100%. These are perfect starter episodes for beginners. They don't get you confused by speaking of any past stories, nor future ones. They just take place in themselves. Though, I would like to make a suggestion... If you are planning on wanting to see an episode from the first series (Of New Who), I'd recommend The Empty Child. One last thing, if you want a perfect 1st episode, start with "Dalek".. You may not get as much character development for the season, but it is all up to you. If you grow to love the list of episodes.. Then it is time to start from the beginning and watch along.. c:

For Eleven, #1 Eleventh Hour is excellent for introducing Matt and giving a refresher on regeneration plus explaining the TARDIS changing. It also introduces Amy and Rory, who will be the consistent companions. For #2 I might go with Time of Angels because it has a quick and dirty introduction and explanation of River and touches on the Weeping Angels. #3 Big Bang, because it deals with Amy and Rory's story and shows what the Doctor is willing to sacrifice, and establishes the 2,000 years thing

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. I want to start watching "Doctor Who", I've been wanting to do that for a while now, but being new to the series and not knowing much about its long history, it's kind of intimidating to pick a place to start... You really helped me with that so, once again, thank you! I'll definitely check out all the episodes you suggested, but I think I'll start with "Blink". It sounds really interesting and it seems to be the perfect episode for me to start. I get a feeling that I'm gonna love this series! =D

I'm sorry but I knew nothing about watching doctor who before starting the show (the 9th doctor) and loved it and found it super easy to get into but if you watch your suggested episode first you won't understand what's happening understand who the characters are you make the show sound so confusing but it's pretty easy to under stand what's happening just start from the start ( either the 1st or 9th) and all your questions will be answered later in the show

For the Ten intro episodes...#1 Christmas Invasion is vital for covering all the regeneration stuff and introducing a new Doctor for viewers, otherwise after five episodes with Chris, David will be disconcerting. Then I would say #2 School Reunion, because it covers past companions and how he moves on. for #3 it's probably best to go with Sound of Drums. It's the part where the Doctor explains things the most and has Jack. From there I lean toward #4 Voyage of the Damned because it touches on

Funny thing is is that i didn't rose for years, i started on the 3rd episode of series one and went on from there. Though I'll admit I didn't quite know everything about it, I enjoyed the show enough that i wanted to know more about it and never felt alienated. didn't feel the compulsion to know it all, just discover it as i go. Plus they executed things like regeneration(particularly in the first series very well.)

The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances are two of my favorite episodes. I think it gives a big insight into who the Doctor is. One of my favorite lines in the entire series happens at the end of The Doctor Dances. The fact that it comes from Nine who is seemingly more dark and brooding than Ten or Eleven makes it that much better. The Doctor breaks into a huge smile and says, "Everybody lives, Rose. Just this once, everybody lives!" The poor Doctor, he's seen so much tragedy.

The Girl Who Waited I'm a little iffy on, because it's throwing a character resolution type episode at someone who's only just seen the introduction of the character last episode. While the it makes the parallels strong, I think it's a better arrangement for a rewatch than an intro. It's calling on empathy that hasn't been strongly established yet. God Complex itself might be better to jump to, because it follows up on Eleventh Hour more directly. And while Vincent is an amazing episode, it's
@Thedarkbunnyrabbit

In order. I don't agree with them starting off early with Midnight, because it requires you to actually care about the Doctor, misleads them into expecting a suspenseful/horror show (especially right after Blink, which is good, but doesn't really explain anything) and not everyone's cup of tea. It also is famous for having the least exposition in any ep. GITF is self-contained, but again doesn't really explain who these people are and why we should care, except Reinette. Waters of Mars suffers

the Doctor on his own, and how he deals with losing people without spoiling too much or requiring you to care about him or his companion too much. It also touches on his little god complex. From there #5 is definitely Fires of Pompeii because it deals with a fixed point and the Doctor being forced to make the impossible choice. I would never recommend season 4.5 to a new viewer, because they just won't understand or care about what's going on without seeing the gradual build to his madness in it

set during the time that Amy can't remember Rory because he's dead and erased. It'll kind of come out of nowhere in an intro tour, and quite possibly confuse people. That, and it's a little bit of whiplash to jump from the end of season six to season five again. But that's just...my view of it. Over far, far, too many comments. I apologize for that, it was supposed to be... Three. One comment per Doctor. :|

I recommend starting with Matt Smith's first episode and going in order. Since everything in the previous seasons disappeared from time because of the cracks, you don't really need any background. I started with the plastic people episode and after getting over the insanity of it, I tried watching from an unearthly child. I watched until Barbara and Ian left. By that time, I liked the series enough to get through the first few bad episodes of the new doctor who. Btw, David Tennant is my fav!

I thought I was the only one who loved "Midnight"! That episode was actually the scariest one for me. Moreso than "Blink" or "Forest of the Dead" or any of the other common scary ones. I started watching DW with "Rose", but I knew beforehand that I was going to love the show and stick with it. If you're trying to figure out whether to watch it or not, watch one of the episodes they suggest. If you've done that and like it, start watching at "Rose", so you get the whole story.

From there, the #2 Unquiet Dead is a pretty good follow up, since it's a direct sequel and jumps into the past and is itself not a bad episode. I might skip ahead to #3 Dalek and then #4 Father's Day, since AiL/WW3 and Long Game are slow and not that important. From there if you're still going for an intro ride, I might skip to #5 POTW for the Daleks/Jack/Regeneration triad (Bad Wolf isn't really important, since you've skipped most of the episodes where it's made a deal of).

#4 I would go with Doctor's Wife. It does require a little bit actually caring about the Doctor to care about the episode, but it's kind of a pay off of the storyline they've followed through about his loneliness, and it illustrates that the TARDIS is a living, breathing creature. For #5 I'd finish with God Complex, because it expounds on all of their issues, and has the Doctor leaving behind his companions to spare them. It's also a decent jumping off point for season seven. That way it's all--

Well now 35 yrs old and wanting to watch this show since I was about 9. I finally started watching it with ROSE. Not as bad in the beginning, the ending kinda was bleh but I actually liked the living plastic. Aliens of London and WW3 was cheezy too me although the aliens were creepy and scared my two year old(DO NOT JUDGE ME) I enjoyed the Dalek episode because I always knew there was a connection with the Doctor and that strange looking robot. I still want to learn more about that history and am conflicted with the minimal change to the Dalek's appearance. It does not look as threatening today as it did when I was younger. Im going in order but I really cannot wait till I get to the Blink episode. Im a horror fanatic and keep hearing that its pretty creepy.

In my opinion, story archs are more fun than watching standalone great episodes. I'd suggest a newcomer to watch the Matt Smith era first. Series 5 to 7, but stop at The Name of the Doctor. The viewer is left with a huge cliffhanger. Then they should go back to the beginning and watch Series 1 to 4. And when they're finished with that, the viewer should continue with the show normally, watching the 2013 specials and Series 8 onwards.

I have to disagree on most of the choices. While they work as some of the best episodes of the two Doctors involved, they're not very good starters for someone who is unfamiliar with the series, especially someone who is unfamiliar with *anything* involving the show. For a strictly 'this is the show' intro, I think I would go with #1 The End of the World. It does a good job of introducing the show without being as confusing as Rose, and without requiring you to care about the characters yet.

If you want to watch doctor who but cant be asked to watch it all, key episodes are Rose, Dalek, The empty child, the doctor dances, Bad wolf, The parting of the ways, the christmas invasion,Tooth and claw, The impossible planet, the satan pit, the army of ghosts, doomsday, Smith and Jones, Gridlock, Human Nature, The family of blood, Blink, Utopia, The sound of drums, The last of the time lords, Partners in Crime, The sontaran stratagem, the poison sky, Silence in the library, forest of the dead, Midnight, the stolen earth, Journeys end, Waters of Mars, The End of time part 1&2, Eleventh hour, time of the angels, flesh and stone, amy's choice, the lodger, the pandorica opens (one after that is pretty bad, watch if you want), The impossible astronaut, day of the moon, good man goes to war, god complex, wedding of river song (quite bad but has necessary info), asylum of the daleks, the angels take Manhattan, the snowmen, the bells of saint john, the name/day/time of the doctor, then stop, 12th doctor episodes are on the whole quite poor, ask someone to summarise them, sorry if the list is kind of long, but it has most of the key/good episodes in my opinion

My first episode was the first episode of the new season, then my friends showed me the girl in the fire place and army of ghosts (idk what they were thinking with that one lol) Then I went back and watched from Rose to the end (in 3 weeks..yeah no life) I don't think watching it out of order is wise, it would cause confusion because scifi is confusing enough as it is especially any episode with Amy/Rory should be watched in order to understand and love their relationship. Always watch from Rose. Always, always! Yes it's cheesy, but in a good and charming way. And what I love is that you get to see the show develop, in budget and quality of story telling, and character, from Series 1-4. Series 5 too, but that's more a massive jump in quality, than a gradual one like in RTD's era. Moffat/Smiths's era was a bit too over hyped and anti climactic for me, in and outside of the show itself. Wish it only kept its audience in Britain as they wouldn't be trying to become more of an American styled show during series 6 and 7.

This video is crap. I watched it when I was seven and knew NOTHING about classic and understood Rose perfectly. I can't seem to find American videos on doctor who that don't rave about Moffat Era or they say skip to smith because effects are crap. Most British fans I know, me included, don't like the eleventh doctor much past series five

woah, pump the brakes there, man. no need to hate. only reason we talked about 10 and 11 is cause they are the two most recent, and we are talking directly to the new watcher, didnt want to overwhelm them with too much to fast. I guess my video was aimed more at americans, since i am one. and every single american i have spoken to watches "Rose" and gets confussed, and refuses to continue watching, cause they compare it to american shows that give you the basic plot right away in the first ep... i didnt mean to rave about the moffat era, i liked 11 (the doctor more than the episodes themselvs) but i also liked 10. and Im a big fan of 4. we are all on the same side here, man.

I'm American and I started with Season 1 episode 1 and was not confused at all. If you skip Rose you miss a lot of plot that plays out even seasons later. If you skip over episodes, in any season, you miss character development and story plot that you need to have for the show. If you skip them sure you can still have a grasp on the show I guess but you wont understand some of the references and some of the story plots and you will not be able to fully enjoy the depth that some of the episodes go into. Like if you skip the end of season 2 you will not understand the impact on the Doctor of Rose coming back seasons later. So tip to new watchers.... Start from season 1 episode 1 and just power through that 1st episode (because granted the 1st one isnt that good).

Yes. I mean the first season of the new era. The previous comment had mentioned Rose and and the current installment of Doctor Who so that is why I called it Season 1. It is Season 1 to a lot of people. I understand that there are many previous seasons prior to 2005 but the comments where discussing "new doctor who". So I called it Season 1 (as it is to a lot of people). Granted it is not technically "Season 1" it has a different feel to it and feels like a totally new show to a lot of people. (I still understand though it is not Season 1 and if someone has the time to watch Original Doctor Who they should but it's not for everyone and there is a LOT to watch if you go that route.)

It's Episode 1 Season 1 of New Doctor Who (2005) , not including Old School Doctor Who (prior to 2005). I own all the DVD's to New Doctor Who and on the case it says "Series One"

Great video! Good suggestions but why not start with "Unearthly Child"? 2:37 The worst got to be "Love & Monsters"! My god did that hurt my head! Wworse than "Unicorn & the Wasp" & worse than any classic cheesefest!!!

Unearthly Child was a fantastic episode, but we wanted to limit out suggestions to just the 10th and 11th Doctor episodes. nothing against 9, but we wanted to just do the more recent Doctors... and... yeah... Love and Monster... my gawd... the only decent part was the sexual inuendo at the end, when her face is on the cement slab, and he mentions having a love life with her, and shes like, dont mention that... lol, i mean, common, you know what that meant... there was only one thing it could have been!

I agree. Start with Season "1" Episode 1. The special effects are awful, but real sci-fi fans don't watch because of the effects. We watch because of the story.

No love for Christopher Eccleston? The series had a shaky start but the first season shouldn't be skipped completely. The Empty Child was an excellent episode and we meet Captain Jack :D Without Mr. Eccleston as the 9th Doctor the whole series may not have been revived to it's current success. I love David Tennant and Matt Smith, but I just hate how Christopher Eccleston isn't as appreciated as he should be.

Similarly. (Good lord why is this so wordy I'm sorry D:) It's a beautiful and excellent episode, but it doesn't really mean anything without the context beyond Pompeii to go off of. Especially when he's raging against the dying of the light, it doesn't really touch on why, because that's been his whole character arc up until that point. As far as Eleven's episodes, so much time is spent on Amy and Rory who you've never seen before it doesn't help with establishing Eleven or the Doctor.
