There are a million different ways that you can start a rap verse.
It may depend on the beat you’re rapping on, your mood when you start writing, or your overall goal for the song.
This is Rome Earth with How To Rap, and today, I’m breaking down ten different techniques to help you get started on writing a fire rap verse.
Let’s get into it.

#1 “The Alley-Oop”
At some point, you’re gonna need to weave your verses together to make full, complete and cohesive songs.
One way you can do this is to start a verse while consciously preparing to connect it to the next verse in the song.
Not only will this bring your writing to the next level, it will make starting your next verse that much simpler. That’s why it’s the alley-oop!
#2 Theme it Out
Some of us function better with structure and logic over intuition.
If that’s you, it may be helpful to come up with a pre-determined theme before you start writing.
I recommend choosing a beat, and listen to it a few times, until you come up with a theme.
#3 The Freestyle First Technique
This is a simple and smooth technique to get creativity flowing in the studio.
All you gotta do is, play a beat, then freestyle on that joint! When I say freestyle, buddy, I mean freeeestyle.
Explore the beat, explore your voice, different deliveries, melodies, cadences…all of it. It’s non-committal and you can forget about anything wack and keep what sticks.
#4 The Intuitive Download
This one is kinda like the opposite of the “Look Around” technique. The Intuitive Download requires you to instead, look within…
This is my preferred method of choice.
Play the beat, feel it out, and when you are ready, close your eyes, and let the first word or topic that pops up in your mind be the start of your verse..
#5 Look Around
If you are stuck on a verse before you have even started, all you need is a little push to get the wheels rolling.
An easy way to do this is to look around you, find an object that stands out, and use that as the basis of your verse.
For example, I’m out here living on the islands… So, I look outside and I see palm trees.
#6 Off the Hook
A lot of artists will come up with their chorus first, then build the song around it.
If you come up with a solid hook or chorus, you then have a source of inspiration to start writing your verse.
There are a million examples of this in rap music, an easy one being “P.I.M.P.” the 2003 hit single by 50 Cent.
#7 The Puzzle Piece Technique
Starting a verse does not necessarily mean starting at the beginning of the verse.
There is no definite order in the creation process, and sometimes it’s helpful to free yourself from a linear structure for a minute, just to get the bars flowing.
Play a beat, put that mug on a loop, and start writing, bar after bar, rapid fire, with little to no regard of where exactly it’ll fit into the verse’s structure…These are your puzzle pieces.
#8 Paint the scene
Music is medicine. For both creator and listener, it provides a necessary escape from the everyday struggle.
So it’s always dope to paint a vivid scene for your listener to imagine. Bring your fans on a ride, a fantastic voyage so to speak.
This technique is useful for any type of verse but is especially important if the verse or song you are writing is gonna be of the storytelling variety.
#9 The Mumble Rap Technique
A really fun and effective way to get a verse going, is to mumble over the beat first.
You can hum, mumble or even speak gibberish, all as an effort to find a certain flow or cadence that rides the beat well.
#10 Start a Rap Verse!
This one is the last on the list, however, the number one way to start a rap verse is…drumroolll.. START A RAP VERSE.
Yup, it’s that simple.
Look, I commend you for studying, preparing, and tryna figure out the best way to go about writing a verse, but the truth is, there is no ONE right way.

Pharoahe Monch said once that he likes to start his verse with something outlandish, maybe unpleasant or shocking, not neccesarily connected to the topic of the song only to capture the listener's attention. Like, WTF DID THIS GUY SAY!!?? When I heard him saying "Smack a n in his mouth, stab his mother in the eyeball" I knew that this is Monch exercising his writing rule

Appreciate all the great tips! have definitely employed a few of them before. Last one definitely really being on the money. Recently I've been working on various exercises and one that I try to do everyday is the kinda like freestyling but in writing form, so basically a brain dump, don't give myself time to stop and think, just write (and usually put a time limit like 5-10min). After freestyling a little bit, I've found that there is usually enough time in the process of writing to always come up with at least a rhyme (even if it doesn't make sense 😂). Actually been meaning to get Freestyle Fortnight, been looking for as much help and as many exercises as possible to help with my off-the-dome
