Im a painter, so I've already amassed a unique collection of tools. As a proud owner of a 2015 mercedes benz that i lowered and maintain myself, the amount of metric sockets and giant wrenches i have has deterred me from ever owning a non european car. The tools come as you need them. Dont rush.

Same. Problem is I own a fucking acura tl and every time I buy or looks at a small socket set I realize it ends at 21mm. The lug nuts are 22mm. Also, it stops me from buying craftsman sets because those fuckers have skips to try to make you buy both SAE and metric. I want to buy both anyways but I hate having skips.

I have a full shop full of tools and a fully loaded enclosed service truck, I have a lot of tools from a lot of brands, I have a lot of snap on and I have a lot of ICON tools. Most of the icon tools are absolutely fine for consumer use but there are items that snap on has that literally nobody can touch, their BJP1 ball joint press blows every other one on the market out of the water. Literally no comparison and I have used all of them, another one is pullers, gear, 2 or 3 jaw pullers. You will not beat a snap on, again I have tried pretty much every brand of pullers out there. The draw rods don’t hold up to even normal use. Their hammers are perfect, I have almost all of them, go swing any other hammer for a half an hour and see how it feels. Then do it with a snap on, you can still grip onto things, your finger joints aren’t sore, your hands aren’t ringing. The little things from snap on are sweet too. Their shrader core screwdriver, feeler gauge holders, the stupid stuff that makes my life easier ya know? The pliers they make are a god send, the only brand that can compete with them is knipex. That being said, 1/2 drive impact sockets from harbor freight are pretty good, their Pittsburgh Pro 3/4” and 1” impact sockets are solid, their icon snap ring pliers are awesome ( I have literally all of them). That being said when I reach in a drawer I always go for the snap on stuff as my first option, it just feels better and when you spend as much time as I do wrenching on stuff it’s the little things that make a difference.

It was winner Hudson, New York mid 2018. I was driving a 1998 Saturn wagon to work and the belt broke on me. I called my boss and explained the situation that I was broke down on the side of the road and he gave zero fucks about my situation. He demanded I show up for work regardless of what was going on in the snow. After watching a KZbin film on how to replace the belt I ran to the nearest Lowe’s and picked up a Kobalt ratchet set. Stop by a AutoZone, bought a belt and made my ass to work pissed off as hell. One, Ford focus, Chevy Cruz, 4- Runner & Ford Ranger later I still use that ratcheting set to this day and I’ve never gone back into a mechanic shop.

My first piece of tool as an adult was a metric craftsman socket and driver set. Used it to replace alternator, put together furniture, change oil etc. Since i bought a tool bag and filled it with crowbar, hammer, level, sockets, screwdriver, tape measure etc. All the randoms. Then i recently got into the bauer line of tools. I have the drill, recip saw, weedeater, blower and shop vac. Recently cut my old smart tv in half with the recip saw to stuff in the garbage. Worked great! Harbor freight baby.

I've had to start from 0 twice. This time around I put together a core set of sockets and wrenches from the Habitat for Humanity store for $3 a pound. You have to dig around, but there's good stuff mixed amongst the junk. Got a 4 drawer Craftsman toolbox there for $10, older Dewalt 1/2" impact wrench for $10. Giant, super overkill floor jack that was free. Whenever there is something else I need, Harbor Freight is good enough. Like the damn tie rod tool I just had to buy.

When I started as a mechanic, I was lucky enough to inherit most of my dad's tools (he was in the British army in the 70s). I still have (and use) all of his 70s King Dick and Dowidat tools. Everything else that I needed (including a toolbox) I got from Halfords (the UK equivalent of Autozone kinda, they do some good quality stuff).

When I was a kid, my dad would go to garage sales and pick up whatever tools they had for dirt cheap. I used them growing up, and when I went to school for automotive science, the vast majority of my tools were those unbranded Taiwanese tools from garage sales around town. I'm a firm believer that a tool is a indeed a tool.

I’ve been “collecting” tools here and there for the last 30 years, but aside from literally missing most of my 10mm (no, serious!), I have a Craftsman tool chest (5’ tall) full of random stuff. Some super cheap socket sets I bought to keep in a junker trunk, to some old nice ones that my dad bought in the 70’s. But now, while I’m not really missing much (except 10mm!), I find myself wanting a quality entire set of tools that are a pleasure to use. I do have some decent wrenches - so maybe I’ll just buy piecemeal some decent “sets” of specific tools. (That Vessel set looks decent.) Edit: I need some JIS drivers!

I bit the bullet and bought $2.5k worth of tools ($700 worth of amazon gift cards I had accumulated from blood donations helped offset that total more, so not bad) and I can do anything on a car with quality tools. 4 premium torque wrench’s that aren’t breakable electronic ones, low profile and long reach Daytona jack, transmission jack harbor freight, capri tools full half inch, 3/8, and 1/4 drive impact sockets in metric, with the 3/8 is being blow molded with metric and sae to cover all the bases with sae. And then I got a nice wera 1/4 inch set that fits in glove box and has screw and torx and hex external and internal sockets, with the locking swivel head. Got all the different bleeder kits I need and flushing, etc, to perform all fluid and brake changes. I got a full set of torx bits and hex bits from capri and tekton… some plyers, clamp wrenches, strap wrenches, set of three size capri ratchets. Got it all. A few things I’m not listing like miscellaneous, lights, gloves, eyewear, things like that but all in all it’s a complete set and I don’t have that same feeling I use to have of self doubt because I don’t have all the tools I need to complete a job. Spent decent money on torque wrenches and researched the best for accuracy so I spent $550 for all 4 of those and then making sure you get decent sockets and ratchets is good too so capri brand makes sense for good value, another note is bit sockets can break when cheep so I wouldn’t go too cheep on those depending on what you do but the capri set was on amazon for 55$ and was great value with all the Torx you get internal and external, etc. I think I will get that $130 service cart to match the Daytona jack from us general and wait until I see the big U.S. general tool box go on sale more. I have these old but not beet up file cabinets you would see in an office that I’ll store everything in for now, it can fit larger items and it has sliding tray that makes it not bad for setting up sockets on trays.

Here’s the 2 only reasons why any professional mechanic buys snap on or any tool truck brand. 1, because it’s extremely convenient to have tools brought to you at work. 2, because you like having something that’s bourge. That’s it. I’ll never tell my friends to buy the tools I have because it’s not worth it. I buy expensive tools because I like them.
