I have a tip of my own! not for just webcomics though Tip: Don't make a full-blown reference sheet for characters until you've drawn them a bunch of times. You need to give yourself time to experiment with them and make it a design you'll actually enjoy drawing over and over
@domily12643 жыл бұрын
I know this was written 4 months ago but I needed this so bad. I always think I need to do character sheets first but I struggle so much with them because It's hard to keep my character consistent. This mindset will help so much, thank you!

I’ve had some of my characters for 5 or 6 years and tbh I still haven’t made any full fledged (front, profile, back, face closeup) references for them. I’ve just never gotten around to it. Thankfully I’m pretty good at memorizing their facial features and body types.

5:19 Nahhh I find making a comic easier than making reference sheets, even with the backgrounds and planning and everything else. This is because reference sheets really trigger my perfectionism; it has to be perfectly proportional otherwise *what's even the point of making them I can just reference pics of my characters in my comic itself :'D* It also makes me feel pressured to be more perfectionistic when drawing the comic itself, because *I have a reference sheet, why did I even make it if I'm not going to follow it religiously :'D* Hooray for sunk cost fallacy! :P Whereas at the moment I work fast and loose, and everything still looks okay :] Then again, I have a really simple style; I guess for most semi-detailed styles where getting the slightest detail wrong will make your characters look like a completely different person, I can see why reference sheets might be really important :'D

I've been planning my comic for over a year now. It started out as a little practice/passion comic, but then I decided I wanted to do more with it. I've only just now started planning the beginning few volumes, and the reason I haven't really planned out the end is because I always think I could do more with it since little of it has a huge overarching plotline. It's about superheroes and shit

Making comics in Inkscape seems easier. It allows for copying/pasting of parts of characters for all views from the reference sheet. On the cons side: you can tell stuff has been copied/pasted, even if modified in each iteration.

knowing the end of a story before you start to write is a super good idea Jeff smith drew the last page of bone before he finished the first issue that's kind of how i plan to write my web comic when that happens

It's funny how this came out now, because recently I picked up a comic of mine I began in the beginning of summer. For me, middles are the messiest, because I have the arc planned and where they started out, the major event where their development stands out, and then nothing in the middle. I'm worried about pacing, mostly because I have no idea how to define it or apply it. Your video is good, and as someone who struggles with consistency I like your suggestion to draw the characters more to get used to it. Now I just need to find a platform for when I'm ready to publish it.
@chelle44194 жыл бұрын
If you’re good at beginnings and endings, then you should try to think of the middle as a series of beginnings and endings. Like each chapter has a beginning and ending and even each page is a beginning and ending. Thinking of the story in sections should help you bridge your gaps a bit easier. Good luck!

Fun fact about stranger things owo, it was originally meant to be like the same setting and plot happening each season, but with different characters. They said they got a bit too attached to the actor for Dustin, since he seemed perfect for the time the show takes place in. But I dunno why they kept going with the show just cuz of an actor 🤷♀️

Thank you for this video, I hope you're doing OK. I love comics -and I dream of making one-, and I think another great thing about reference sheets is that you can get the mood of the character by the pose you use and the facial expressions to convey their attitude or personality.

YOO, your art is insanely good! Love the colors. Some advice tho is that I think you should add more space between each panel. It makes it a little easier to read it especially since it's on an up-down scrolling. The smaller space would be better suited for a book format

Your line variation is sooo good. Perhaps that pen pressure, but your skill is pretty great to get those. Do you have a link to or a video on your brush settings? I didn’t see them in your description. If you don’t feel like sharing for whatever reason that’s fine too, but I’m really working on line variation and those pen settings look downright fun to use.

Loving the artwork here! One thing tho: Artists don't HAVE to accept Critique. At least if it's not asked of beforehand. I absolutely *hate it* when randos critique my content when I didn't even ask for it. Hell, the majority of the time, it comes off as condescending towards me as a beginner artist. (At least be NICE when your trying to help...And actually provide references to what your talking about. Don't just say *"The X thing doesn't look right."* and then go radio silent after I tell you *"I know...That's why it's a SKETCH...And don't give me critique when I didn't ask for it. It comes off as rude to me."* At least apologize and provide the references lmfao and stop being rude about giving critique pfftt
@Liz-with-a-smile4 жыл бұрын
I highly recommend not posting your sketches online if you are a beginner. It will just mess with your confidence. Unless its a website that offers critique and advice to beginners. That's just a suggestion. Take it or leave it. And good luck on your journey.

I believe that if you cannot accept criticism, don't be posting on the internet, lol. or at least you are not an artist if you cannot deal with criticism, since the numero uno is what you'll get for posting your art to general public. that's just how it is. plus if you ever went to art school, boy oh boy, if you cannot accept it, you'll break. some actually do. which is sad but also it's just life, right? you can't please everyone in the world and it is not your job to do so. so don't be a diiiiiiick about taking and giving it and you'll be fine.
@aspenram38853 жыл бұрын
So if it's not my job to please everyone shouldn't I ignore criticisms and if I should ignore it then shouldn't we encourage people to give less of it?
