Bring a larger cook pot than you normally do. One that is more squat than upright. It will conserve fuel better. Bring a foil or titanium wind screen. Again to conserve on fuel. You bring the larger pot to make a large hot drink at your meal time beside just your meal. Pack an insulated mug to keep your hot drink warm. If you are melting snow for water 2 quarts is the minimum pot size 3-4 is even better. Teflon give water a funky taste so try to avoid melting snow in those pots.

100% agree with everything you said in this video. I have also been on some crazy cold temps in other parts of the country. I also live here in Ohio you quickly realize that it’s not just the temps. It’s the constant humidity and everything is always wet.

Great stuff, thanks guys! My tip is to bring along Kyle's mom to keep you warm at night.

Wool may weigh a bit more but won't melt from fire sparks, even a thin wool blanket may help protect synthetic clothing around a fire plus additional warmth.

Hike fewer miles in the winter so it's daylight when you get to camp.

Have you ever used a roll of reflectix along with either under quilt or sleep pad..? When I get a chance to, I want to put it in between layers of my two layer black bird XLC, along with the quilts…. Just to see what it adds. I want to get to deep freeze winter camping.

Don't be afraid to carry heavier gear, a little discomfort on trail will be worth it in camp. Try not to overdo it but take what you need to be safe. Also if conditions allow use a sled. It doesn't have to be expensive, a $20 one from Walmart will work just fine. You might need to make some adjustments to the pull rope but that's easy.

Do put your damp gear in your sleeping bag. Do not use a zip lock bag, just put it in there. It works. The plastic bag is why nothing dries. Even people on Antarctica cross land expeditions use this technique. Don't drink before bed, Hot or not. Waste of energy. Food yes, doesn't have to be hot either lol. Your body is already a furnace, just digestion heats you up. Sorry to troll 😅

Why I’m still afraid of trying a winter camp. Carrying too much s$&&t! How much would you say your backpacks weigh in the winter as opposed to the summer?
@-humveehoove-6106 Жыл бұрын
My base weight myself is about 28 lbs an that's with a wood stove an hot tent/ summer time about 15-20 idk why but I can not reach that ultralight weight an I have very good gear smh

Cold, wet and windy is a killer and there’s not much to improve your situation.
