You can also double it up and put it onder your coat for a incredible warm wind-blocker. I have a small piece of one in my running backpack for when it gets really cold and wet. Keeping the core warm does loads of good !

Hey John of course! I made a score. The end of the fall i got 16 of these on a walmart clearance rack for 16 dollars. They are more rigid than the dollar store ones definitely making it a bit harder to carry but they are more rigid. I'm going to keep a few and give the rest to the homeless. Hope you doing well. Cheers!
@IntenseAngler3 жыл бұрын
Hey Joanne! It definitely sounds like you made an awesome score... 16 of the more sturdy ones for 16 bucks... very nice! How incredibly thoughtful and kind of you to give some of them to the homeless... that will be a gift beyond measure in helping to keep them warm during this time of year for sure! You're my kinda people :-) All is well over this way. I hope that the same is true for you! Cheers! -John

I've been a backpacker for a while and think I have a pretty good handle on how to go about it. But THIS was one of the most clever tips I've heard in a long time that NEVER would have crossed my mind. Awesome man! I'm picking one up today. No questions asked.
@PaulDeFitter10 жыл бұрын
I've been using one of them for about 4 years now, can also be used to waft the fire, use as a pot cosy, use in the hammock in the fall months, use as a cape over your shoulders, etc etc, don't leave home without one : )

That's a incredible Winter camping tip! I usually bring hand warmers and tape one to the bottom of my wool socks... put another 1 in my pocket and another 1 in my chest pocket !

Hey John, I'm sitting on mine in the house right now, lol. I pulled a muscle in my back, the extra heat helps immensely. I can reinforce your statement been using mine for ages and here in damp old Scotland it really does make a difference. Keep up the good work and seasons greetings to you and yours John. Atb, Jai

I trimmed 3 of these and added Velcro at matched intervals along the edges. Now I have 3 camp chairs/ground pads and they can joined for a FULLY lined hammock or tent...or layered for extra cushion...or...one can serve as a fire reflector...or... 3 pads with Velcro connectors for about $4 and weighing only a few ounces. This was a no-brainer for me!

@IntenseAngler10 жыл бұрын
Great idea using one in the ol' hammock :) Do you find that it makes quite a bit of difference warmth-wise while hangin'?
@SpiritofWildWings10 жыл бұрын
IntenseAngler Absolutely! The foam-backed side secures it from slipping in the hammock and the mylar blocks convection while reflecting body heat. I have used one since I saw a video where Greene Dean made a solar oven with them. I shot a video on that, but I can't remember where that foot age is. Again, great video, and I can vouch for the effectiveness of using one.

That's interesting, I'm looking for other methods of using sun shades for insulating small areas, like maybe a car. But to directly lay on them like a mattress pad makes them more useful. Thank you again.
@paulsheppard583710 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that One of the things I use is a space blanket wrapped around the sleeping mat, however might have to start using one of those sun shades as everyone is talking about them Happy trails

I was thinking the same thing when I first saw what he was doing but the extra use as a general sitting mat and kneeling pad does give this more functionality over the space blanket, and I'm all about single items with multiple uses. :D

That material is good stuff. I don't use a car shade, but I do use the Reflectix stuff (same material, but comes in rolls). It is an amazing insulator for the weight. Only drawback is it can collect condensation.

hmmm, I wonder how well it might work as a lightweight underquilt for hammocks. I need something, but can't afford the down options right now...
@PaCampingDad10 жыл бұрын
The problem will be with condensation. I sometimes use a small pad made out of refletix (basically the same material but lighter than a sunshade) under my feet in a hammock when using a 3/4 length underquilt. After several nights of being initially warm,but ending with cold feet and visible wetness where the pad was, I opted for different solutions. But go ahead and give it a shot when you are somewhere that you can bail out if you are too cold/uncomfortable.
@2campinallweather31910 жыл бұрын
Worked for me so far but I had it UNDER my sleeping mat in the hammock. Atb, Jai
@FlashGeiger10 жыл бұрын
Hennessy Hammocks has been selling a shaped version for years. It was the first insulation I used but have gone to under quilts now. I don't know why condensation would be considered a problem with this and not with a sleeping pad like some use. It was comfort more than anything that moved me from this to uq, although a uq is also able to be warmer.
@2campinallweather31910 жыл бұрын
FlashGeiger I must admit, I have not had any condensation problems, just been warm and cosy ,lol. I shall take note on my next trip out (new years day)
