For anyone who needs this information, when calling 911: State or describe your location, describe the emergency, then give your name. That way if you get disconnected or become unconscious, they know where you are and can send someone there. Be as succinct as possible. If you are driving, memorize the last exit you passed or pay attention to the mile markers. Know which Cardinal direction you are driving. Be as descriptive as possible if there is someone comitting a crime.

In my city, the EMS dispatchers get paid an additional 8 hours overtime every other week if they don't call off on that week. I do their payroll and I can't get 1 hour overtime! Lol. I interviewed to be a EMS dispatcher about 10 years ago. I just couldn't do it. I almost broke down from listening to an example call during my interview. It takes a special kind of people to do that job. Thank you to the dispatchers and first responders. ❤❤

That 911 dispatch interview testing is most stressful interview and the headset they had was kind that went behind your head not sit on top of head. The whole time I'm trying to fill out info on system for fake calls and dispatch correct emergency services the headset was sliding off my small head 🤣
@kaydb423 ай бұрын
That's why they get that extra 8hrs - enticing them into retention, even as they get stressed out, and really just wanna walk away from all the trauma. They still end up saying fuggit and walk out all the time anyway ... sometimes, eventually, even the bonuses ain't enough, you can't get paid enough to listen to one more last breath. Bless them too, they find a new life and start becoming much better people (or returning to their better selves).
@topaz34683 ай бұрын
Hey Josh... I have a true story for you. I was actually working as a 911 operator 18 years ago, and legitimately came down sick. There were so many call outs in my comm. center from folks who were not sick, that the Capt of the department came to my house ringing the doorbell at my front door, within an hour of me calling out. Believe it or not, he was checking to see if I was really sick. LOL. He didn't even send another deputy over to my house, but decided to visit himself. 😮 I staggered out of bed only to find my boss standing on my porch. 😂. He took one look at me, disheveled and in my robe, and knew it was legit. 😊
@kaydb423 ай бұрын
We had someone call out "sick" to attend a party the next county over. Our commander sent the local agency there to interrupt the party and let them know they are required to show up for work or get their reprimand. They did not show up that night. They did not show up the next night. The third day, they filed their resignation. I was lucky, we worked the same shift, so I was there my usual hours. But the person that they usually relieved was stuck working 16hr days that whole time. I get conflicted on it, because it's hard to get time off and all, we're always short, but also, it's important to be able to enjoy your time! But also... calling out and making your coworkers work doubles at the last minute is not only rude to your co-workers, but to the public. The longer the number of hours your first responders have worked, the less hospitable they get, the less accurate, the less focused...the more dangerous for emergencies 😮
@smirbelbirbel3 ай бұрын
@@kaydb42At the end of the day, the fault lies in a system that doesn't grant workers any rights or reasonable PTO. That's why it's so important to unionise instead of being pitched against each other like that. In Europe we get at least 25 days PTO per year, public health care and everything is running. We can even go to a party without someone trying to pick us up for work there.

I was a 999 operator (UK version of 911) about 25 years ago - it's definitely not a job I'd recommend to young people, I heard DV actually happening, as well as being there with people as they saw someone close to them dying and other similar situations. But we did get people who called up just to talk. It was mostly lonely elderly people. I remember one old lady calling up to find out how long she should put her chicken in the oven for. I had to say "I'm sorry, I'm 19, and live by myself. I don't really cook full meals! 😁 As for tracking, if you call from a landline then the registered address and customer name appears on screen immediately, but they don't know that's who they're speaking to. You might also be calling for something that happened next door or down the street. One final thing that we had in the UK was that the opening greeting was pre-recorded. It was only a second or two, but it gave us enough time to open the "emergency call" window and make sure we weren't on mute. But it meant that if someone was talking as soon as they heard my voice I'd missed the first 2-3 seconds of what they were saying. 😔

One of the biggest problems with privatized health insurance is how little EMS gets paid by insurance companies. The lack of money gets passed down to the EMT’s, paramedics and dispatchers, creating an employment crisis in the industry; the number of people who are willing to deal with the stress of that job for the obscenely low pay is… insufficient to say the least It’s certainly far from the only problem with privatization, but it’s a pretty big one.

I recently stumbled upon one of your videos, and I must say, I have been utterly engrossed by your content ever since; especially your political content. Your delivery is remarkably natural and distinctive, imbuing your performance with a sense of depth. It feels as if I am engaged in a personal dialogue, drawn further into your narrative. The random pauses and your subtle chuckles before delivering a "punchline" add a delightfully alternative storytelling element. Your shows offer a refreshing perspective on stand-up comedy that I hadn't realized I was yearning for. I sincerely hope that your talent reaches a wider audience. I am eager to extol your remarkable abilities and innovative approach to everyone I know. My next endeavour is to search your concert schedule in the hopes of finding Saskatchewan, Canada, on the list. I eagerly anticipate experiencing your live show! Until then, I will indulge in a marathon of your videos. Thank you for bringing such joy and delight!

USA's 911 is the most integrated, and yet the most outdated emergency system in the world. GPS was invented in 1973. Smartphones started picking up in the 90s. The internet had mass adoption in the 2000s. Mobile apps are ubiquitous in the 2010s. AI are gaining commercial steam in the mid-2020s. And yet.... you still need to make a voice phone call to another human person in an emergency. Uber and Doordash could do a better job of getting information on what you need and dispatching them to "your exact location" in seconds! The military and spending BILLIONS on cutting edge tech. And NO ONE thinking "Hey! maybe 911 need an upgrade."

His description of what its like to be a 911 operator is also what's it like being a social worker at a public center where anyone can walk up for all kinds of help at any moment. Hearing continual trauma stories and having to solve crises. I know because that's what I've done for 25 years.

On the headset/headphone thing: I've worked in many (many) call centers. We can't wear the over-the-ear stuff because you get ear infections because we don't get enough breaks and we wear them for basically 8 hours straight. People still get ear infections from the little ones, and it's really hard to shake off an infection, because the boss is like, "Just wear it on the other side..." and it doesn't help. But yeah, someone needs to design a better headset.

I work EMS. Before EMS I worked as a 911 dispatcher. I don't think people know how hard being a 911 dispatcher is. If you call from a cell phone the closest we can get is cell tower you phone is pinging off of, that's if we can keep you on the phone long enough without you hanging up. Alot of people think we just answer the phone when that's not it. While I'm taking your emergency in my ear, I also have to keep track of my officers. So you're screaming in my ear because your kid isn't breathing, and on my radio my officer just pulled someone over for running a red light and now they're in a high speed chase which turns into a foot pursuit. So I'm talking to you AND trying to keep track of my officier who's yelling out street names as he passes them so I can send him help while I'm trying to talk a hysterical mom through the steps of CPR so she can do chest compressions on her 8 month old until the ambulance gets there. On the EMS side, people think there's always an ambulance around the corner and there's not. Sometimes we're the closest ambulance and we're 32 minutes away from you. Both of these jobs people are burnt out. We work 12 hr shifts and we don't have the people to keep up with the call volume especially because alot of people call 911 for stupid shit. As a dispatcher it doesn't matter if my last emergency the caller was suicidal and I listened to them pull the trigger. When I hang up I have to answer the next emergency like I didn't just hear someone blow their brains out. As EMS, when I respond to a emergency for a common cold and the patient is rude, disrespect, swearing at me and has a attitude because it took us 15 minutes to respond, they don't know and don't care that we just tried to save a 3 year old who drowned in the neighbors pool and we weren't able to save them. And I have to turn around and respond to the next emergency because we have emergencies holding because we don't have units to respond because everyone is already on an emergency or at the hospital trying to get their patient in a room. Both of these jobs take alot mentally and emotionally out of you which is why people are quitting and leaving, and why we have such a hard time staffing. Because people are burnt out, underpaid, underappreciated and it's a nationwide issue

Anyone from Detroit? I’m from Detroit, born and raised, and I had two guys try to robe me, my mom (RIP) and my then 10 year old daughter but he put the gun to my heart but I didn’t realize it and I pushed the gun down. My mom started screaming and they ran. We called 911 and they told me they weren’t coming for that. Seriously?? You aren’t coming for that?? And that’s one reason why I don’t live in Detroit anymore.

I used to do tech support for AOL and I had a new person on my team and I was the team lead. We got along great because we both had fully functioning brains. He was a fighter pilot and he was interested in technology so he figured it would be a good crossover. He lasted about 3 weeks and said he'd rather be shot at. I worked internet tech support for Comcast for a while and I was team lead there as well and he lasted about 3 weeks before he quit and went back to 911. He told me grisley stories that happened around town that he took the call for. And he said that he would rather hear people screaming in pain and horror than be yelled at by people who are scared of their computer and lash out at customer service.
