As a kid who was born and raised in Mississippi, this is embarrassing. I was born in Hattiesburg, I am a fan of USM sports, my family mostly consists of USM allumni, some of them who went to college with Farve. And this? This a spit in the face of the people of Mississippi. If you even go 5 miles out from any large city's downtown area there, you can see the economic wasteland the majority has to deal with. Farve and the government officials of Mississippi have disappointed me to the fullest extent. And what a shame, many people there affected will never get to hear this case because the media never likes to talk bad about the celebrities of Mississippi. A goddamn embarrassment this is.

Universities don't really care about the people around them. Notre dame is another college where the town around it is an economic wasteland. They make insane money with sports and academic research but don't care about their essential workers who are underpaid and face threats of their housing being turned into parking lots and malls. Many universities also gentrify when they expand their campuses and butt heads with the city politics over it. They supposedly "contribute" to their cities economy but the people at the bottom never benefit from it.

It's why we should have gone back to the old ways of having people apply and if they qualify for assistance they receive it directly from the federal government instead of block grants to states. We changed the policy because politicians, Reagan being one, started beating the drum beat people out there were committing fraud with very little evidence other than a few people here or there. Instead we went to block grants in which fewer people receive funds and a lot of money often gets diverted into areas it's not intended for and/or corruption such as the Favre case. They wanted to get rid of corruption but ended up creating more and a less efficient system because after all, we don't really want to help poor people.

Great stuff as always. I think the reason we focus on Favre is the way it reads almost like a Greek play. We have a man who is beloved in his field making piss-poor decisions and, like King Midas, the downfall is in the daughter. Doubly ironic considering this was just a couple years ago. My reaction as a football fan is the money could have been made easily by someone like Favre right now with a few Draft Kings spots, maybe a new show to compete with Peyton and Eli, turning to acting to steal roles from Ron Perlman, basically anything. The chances were there and, like Favre sometimes did on the field, he threw it away (it got intercepted if you will). That's all on Favre. The rest of these people are slime. And I sincerely hope every state in the Union takes a good long look at all this stuff.

As someone who grew up in Wisconsin during the early 2000's who idolized Brett Favre, it's been really tough to watch this all play out. Part of me hopes that it's a big misunderstanding but the other part of me knows he almost certainly did it. If nothing else, I hope this whole ordeal causes everyone to reevaluate how much public money we spend on sports and sports stadiums in this country. Lane Kiffin makes 8.5 mil a year as head coach for Ole Miss, and even if not as explicit as what Favre did, that money is still being taken out of the hands of the people of Mississippi. Hell, SoFi Stadium cost $4 billion to build in a state with one of the biggest homelessness crises in the world. We as a society need to decide if we're upset about what Brett Favre actually did or if we just don't like the optics of it all

@@VMan29397 That's kinda my point. People are framing this as "Brett Favre steals millions in unprecedented heist" rather than "Dumbass Captain Concussion found taking from the one cookie jar labeled 'Do Not Eat' instead of one the dozens of other jars people take from all of the time"

to have made the monies he had during his hall of fame career and then be found corrupt of these doings is sad beyond any fan's belief; so many thought the world of him!

God I loved brett, grew up with him as a hero like a lot of kids in Wisconsin. Its really hard to say your favorite player is a guy who steals from the poor, scratch that, its impossible ☹

The guy is so greedy but no one in his state is lifting a finger to hold him accountable. It shouldn’t be a federal issue though so hopefully they’ll put the welfare queen away for a while.
