Like brewing espresso, steaming milk is not something you'll nail from the start. It'll take some knowledge, passion/interest, and lots of practice. I'm still working on getting consistent, but I wanted to finally create a video on steaming milk because so many of you have been asking me to! I hope you find this video helpful or, at the least, fun to watch. Thank you all for your support! I'm excited to create more coffee content moving forward 😊

Wow this is such a good tutorial. I wish i saw it a couple months ago. Theres such a difference between steaming on a dual boiler and a single boiler. You do such a great job explaining how to steam milk using the machine that, lets be real, most people actually have. I did use a thermometer for about a week and that helped me get a feel for temperature.
@HijabsandAprons
@HijabsandAprons Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much!! A big reason I wanted to share my experience/tips is exactly what you mentioned--many tutorials demo on a dual boiler or machines that are much more powerful than the more common Breville machines. The thermometer's very useful to get a better gauge of actual temp vs. feel in your own hand!! Thank you so much for watching and for your feedback!

How do you keep the wand clean?
@HijabsandAprons
@HijabsandAprons 3 ай бұрын
Make a habit of purging the wand after each time you steam. Use a wet towel to wipe off the exterior after steaming (before purging). For deeper cleaning, whenever you run a flush cycle on the machine, remove the steam wand tip and soak it and the steam wand in a pitcher of hot water with some cleaner dissolved in it. After 5-10 minutes, carefully (with a towel...don't burn yourself) screw the steam tip back on and purge out the wand. There's also the descaling process but these regular cleaning habits should keep it clean!

I use lactose free milk - mixed with a bit of 12% cream - also lactose free. Does this mean I won't get the best results because there is no lactose to break down?
@HijabsandAprons
@HijabsandAprons Ай бұрын
i've tried lactose free milk for steamed milk too and it comes out great! i don't remember the natural sweetness level though to be honest. have you tried steaming it and seeing how it tastes compared to pre-steaming?
@regis32
@regis32 Ай бұрын
@@HijabsandAprons I did not compare the sweetness of frothed regular milk with frothed lactose-free milk. What I heard in your video made me wonder whether using lactose-free milk is a mistake when frothing, because there is no lactose to break down in it :) I was surprised that lactose breaks down when frothing, which means that you get more sweetness. I didn't know about breakdown in such conditions, but I knew that the one (cold) without lactose was sweeter, because removing lactose by breakdown by the manufacturer (I didn't know what method) leads to sweeter milk composed of sweeter sugars. Either way, frothing lactose-free milk gives me poor results - even though I follow the basics. So I will try it with regular milk and compare the sweetness.
@regis32
@regis32 28 күн бұрын
@@HijabsandAprons Well, lactose-free milk is still sweeter - both before and after frothing - up to a temperature of about 62 degrees Celsius

Does it also help having a good amount of crema to make latte art?
@HijabsandAprons
@HijabsandAprons Жыл бұрын
Yes, kind of! I mean you can't do it without crema or a substance with a similar density/texture. For example if you try to do latte art in moka pot coffee (no crema), you've gotta pour extra milk into the base coffee to create a fake layer of crema. But if it's a well pulled shot, then you should be able to pour latte art into it. No need for excess thick crema

I use Soy milk but it gets way too frothy and not hot enough. Can I hot the Soymilk before I use the froth wand?
@HijabsandAprons
@HijabsandAprons 7 ай бұрын
That isn't recommended. You need to really control the depth of the wand to prevent the overaeration and also master the best angle and depth for the "churning" phase to then eliminate any bubbles Don't stop steaming until it's hot enough

I have a Breville Barista Pro. It doesn't seem like there's enough room to work the pitcher downward if I have the wand in the front, even though I'm watching you do the same thing that I do. I have two questions: 1) since I'm using a Breville Barista Pro and using the pitcher it came with, and pouring cold whole milk to the point where it's about a half inch under the spout, if I pull the steam wand out to its maximum, will that give me the same *angle* you're using? 2)Also how did you modify the steam knob to have that long piece so you can more easily turn the steam on and off? Thanks.

1. You should be able to achieve the same angle as long as you move yourself to the side too in order to ensure the same angle. 2. I have a video on that! Link to the item is in the description and on my website. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpmxc2Vof5iioKc

Thanks for the great video! I am using exactly the same machine, but I am getting many bubbles in the coffee shot. It happens in the very beginning of the extraction, so it might not be because of over-extraction. I am not sure if it is because the machine (second-hand) is faulty or the way I use it is improper.

Just tap and swirl them out too. It happens!! I always swirl my espresso before pouring milk into it anyway 🙂

@@HijabsandAprons It turned out that it was because of the dual wall basket I used. The espresso is much less bubbly if single wall basket is used :)

Thank you so much!! Oh gosh it could be the milk or they might be over-extracting the espresso. Or a sad combination of both 😂😭

Awesome video, I am hoping that I will be able to also get that perfect milk foam one day ;-) (Completely random at the moment). How long approximately is that first airing phase with the Breville? (Maybe I am doing this too long as I usually get very much foam but not in this shiny silky quality)
