Instead of buying Christmas decorations at Hobby Lobby, buy food for the freezer & pantry! I turned a guest room closet into an auxiliary pantry for cans, boxes, jars, coffee beans & filters.

Butter goes on sale for the holidays and freezes beautifully. It's amazing how people make sure to have health insurance, home insurance and car insurance, but they scoff at stock piling, which is insurance against hunger and discomfort in case of personal or widespread emergency!

Our one store is so awful we have to buy holiday foods months in advance at regular price. They have had Venezuelan style shopping for 20 years. Since "that thing" happened last year, I've had to drive 4 towns over to shop. Yes, the pantry and freezer stays full, knock on wood.

I bought creamy butter in a can by Red Feather. It’s very good and lasts for years. They guarantee 2 years but we opened a can that was 5 years old and it was so good still. We also bought powdered butter but I’m sure the canned butter is better

I started watching couponing videos, I have never gotten to extreme couponing but I stock up on what I can.

Being LDS /Mormon I am sure you have more than 3 months stored, our brother in-laws family have a few years worth stored. I have about 3-4 months stored, and I wished I would have been taught earlier in life to stock, there were a couple times we had hard times and it would have been a blessing. Both your channels help a lot😁👍🏻

Hard times come in all shapes and sizes. It's not just the current supply chains but could be a job loss, a health problem, an injury, an unexpected expense, car problems or just plain stress that can prevent us from going to the store. A full pantry is peace of mind now and in hard times.

My husband built a built in cupboard in our house it's quite big and holds a lot of supplies. It's great to "go shopping" there and have the peace of mind with extra supplies. We've learned how important it is with pandemic and world events. We buy a lot when half price or on sale and every week we add a packet of pasta, rice, canned items etc as it makes little difference to the total.

Many of the items you mentioned, are in small ziplock baggies, to trade, like cinnamon, cocoa powder, salt, sugar, etc. Focusing on the BOB made it easier to get started for me. I gathered things that I already had around the house, and then made a list for my husband to pick up!

With the depression that is headed across the world, we have been stock piling rice, dried beans, lentils, and canned foods that we use regularly. We keep wheat berries, dried beans, and things needed to cook them into bread and meals such as seasonings, salt, oul, honey etc. and then lots of canned and frozen veggies and meat to make simple meals like soup so we can stock pile for cheap and keeping it simple not complicated and it’s healthy to!

We had a recent treat of a hurricane and there were no tomatoes to be found! Mexican rice is easy and best cooked in a cast-iron skillet. I used a chicken bullion, diced can tomatoes, I had garlic but you can use powder, dried onions if you don't have fresh and cummin powder if you don't have the seeds. You learn to be creative during Hurricane season. You can also throw in chicken if you have it. I'm going to expirement with can chicken in my rice. Make a small amount to try.

I am single and I have just a small one (about 2 months worth), but I live on a budget and every bit of extra money goes to the stock pile. What helped me is the advise that I learned from Kim, stock pile what you eat. Being single, I can make a hot dish last for 6 to 8 meals. I will make up a loaf of bread into individual servings of French toast and freeze them for breakfast so I'm not wasting bread. But I also have about a weeks worth of food in case the power goes off that takes no power or heating. Loved this video!! Thank you!

Been doing this for years. Have three freezers and close to a year supply of what we use. I can dehydrate and freeze. I can make my own bread. I live in a kind of remote area. Two hours in three directions to go to a bigger town. I can’t grow my own food. Too many deer and not enough sun. Large trees.
@craigfleshman27153 жыл бұрын
It is best to keep a one year supply if possible. If you eat 3 cans of food a day and shop once a week that means you eat 21 cans of food a week. If you get just 10 extra cans per week, that will give you 520 cans in 1 year. Divide 520 cans by 3 cans of food eaten per day, that will give you 173 1/3 day supply. That's one week shy of a half a year emergency food supply. Canned food last years past the expiration date. That date is for the Grocery stores to pull off the shelves. Don't forget to store water and back up cooking systems like camp stoves, etc.

I started this many years ago, it all started when we were in Baton Rouge and we had only a few packs of Ramen noodles to eat. That was it, no veggies, nothing else. I made Emergency Ramen Noodle soup, 4 packs of noodles, 3 packs of seasonings, one had gone bad, it filled the pot my brother in law had given us. We, my late husband and I and a friend we had made in the apartment building. Ate from that pot for three days, until I could buy food again. As soon as we moved back up to Reading, Pa, we received some FS to buy food. I spent time and effort going to Food Pantries every month. I had to wait on line for 3 hours at one church to wait to receive the food. At another I found out that if I arrived at 10 minutes to the time they closed, I'd still get two bags of food, and not have to wait an hour. They were a small senior center at the time. We had plenty of canned goods on hand, and I was able to buy the other things we needed to make our meals.

Our community food service is supplied by Local Donations, county food services, and the St Mary's Food Bank from the Big City. One of the wonderful things is they offer garbanzo beans, which I love, and Rice! Pasta and some canned veg and sauces! The fresh Veg was wonderful this fall so far, and my mom has a dehydrator so we get to dehydrate the fresh veg we're not gonna be able to eat right away, and we have desiccants from mother earth products in virginia which is great for putting in with the jars of dried veg. LDS has oxygen absorbers on their online store for a great price, and the 300cc packettes are great for everything, just have to know that 1 300cc is good for 2 quart jar. so if you want to store in a 2 gallon bucket you will need to use 3 300cc, which worked fine or 6 for a 5 gallon food safe bucket.

So I have a safe storage issue. We live in a very old house, 166 years old with a sandstone basement. We just bought the house under a year ago so we are still fixing it up . The basement is quite humid , there is no air conditioning here but it should be decent most months of the year . I was hoping I could run several dehumidifiers to help with that . I was hoping to keep things in bins with lids grouped by category, so no pests get to it. Is this a bad idea? I really don’t know where else to store a decent quantity of food.
@lindarose23273 жыл бұрын
Stockpiling is always good. White rice and dried beans last forever. I have lived many places and know when things get nasty what is important. Water source is one. Put some rain barrels in your garden or roof if you need to hide them. You don’t need the bloody toilet paper in an emergency situation. Newspapers will work and washing is always good. For just temporary situations your advise is great. And the more you have the better. When things get really tough by climate change give up the meat and dairy. You will be healthier if you are plant based. Get a book or take a course in your native plants and foraging. Plant a perennial food garden. Start reading science reports.
@Ms.Byrd683 жыл бұрын
Pick up a bag of 'Dry Beans' every time you shop until you have several bags of beans 'put back'. When you get canned goods, forsake one type of veggie to buy extra cans of one or two of the others you normally buy until you have a month's worth of canned corn, then do it again for another veggie: green beans or peas or carrots. Buy an extra Pepto or aspirin or some other 'health' supply you actually do use but not too regularly. You will be able to put that item aside and put that money somewhere else. You know how you use toothpaste, determine how many tubes you would need to be able to put that couple of dollars somewhere else on your list if you just buy an extra tube of toothpaste, get the cheapest and most effective one you can in the largest tube you can until you can stop buying it for a month. Get an extra box of Laundry detergent. Get a big one and just keep it filled, same with bleach. Same with anything you don't use quickly but you do use. Set a limit to how low you let your stockpile get before you buy more. Pay off your SMALLEST revolving bill and use that money saved the first month to jump start your stockpile then put that money with another payment against the PRINCIPLE of another bill. Once out of debt, that money can be both SAVED and part used towards developing a 'Working Pantry' (one where goods are used rotationally).
