Great tips! My biggest tip for everyone would be to only buy stuff you already use. When we first started stockpiling, we made the mistake of getting stuff like beefaroni and fruit cocktail-stuff we never eat in real life. You have to rotate your pantry and eventually eat everything as it’s close to expiring so make sure you stock stuff you actually like to eat 🙃
@raisingmitchells1224

I totally agree! I am in the UK and we have much smaller homes and in my home for my family of 5 we ONLY stock and rotate what we use regularly. We are going to get a berky water filter to use if needed (we often have burst pipes especially with nearby building works) but we don’t have the room to stock more than a few days of water 🤷🏻‍♀️.

If you're in a hurricane-prone area, I'd recommend a 28 day supply. Hurricane Laura in 2020 destroyed all five water plants in the area. They literally had to go out and look for enough pieces to rebuild a temporary water processing system to at least get running water (boil order for our neighborhood was 23 days...some were 28 days). I am so happy you stressed the importance about a backup water supply that's safe to drink.
@earthstar7534

I work in agriculture and spend a lot of time in those plants. I'd say a month of water on hand minimum. Every home should have a large emergency tank though. I keep a fresh and gray water tank. If treatment plants can't get or afford chemicals to treat the water which is a reality now that could be far longer. Something is better than nothing, but still.

I live in a tornado area. Same thing. Power can go out. Roads closed do to debris. Flooding. And boil water orders. 30 days of ready to eat straight from the can is always in the house. As well as a good sleep bag. A charcoal grill. Paper plates, flatware, cups. Never know when you will have to camp in the yard untill it's declared safe again. Freeze your grains for a week or so before long term storage, it will kill anything you don’t want growing in it. Do not remove air from sugar, place sugar (in the bag it came in) in a food sealer bag, just seal it DO NOT VACUUM SEAL IT. I do this for my flour too (but I do vacuum seal it in a paper bag first or the original sealed bag). I put all of these sealed items in a sealed container, if I can’t get a food grade bucket, I use a new metal trash can that seals tight so I have double insulation against pests. I also date all of my food sealer bags with when I sealed it in large print for easier rotation.

When I first started stocking up I did 30 days worth of convenience foods like mac and cheese 30 pkgs and say spaghetti and meatballs 15 cans along with 15 or so cans of soup. Then I bought Rice 20# and pinto beans 10# flour 45# sugar 25#, along with things like canned chili, dry soups, canned chicken, tuna, turkey, ect. Now I'm buying wholesale meat through work 40# chicken breast in 5oz eaches and 40 # hamburger which I made into 1# pkgs I bought a 5 cu ft freezer at Wal-Mart for $169.00 just for this meat. I just now bought a solar generator along with 100 watt solar panel so I can keep this little freezer running (live in AZ ) land of endless sun. Would you consider doing a food storage processing video where you go over how you preserve a wide range of pantry items for long-term storage and what products you prefer to store but "rotate" to ensure you use & replace to ensure you have an adequate backup supply of critical items? That would be amazing...thanks for considering.

I know myself - I will never mill my own wheat unless I am totally desperate, lol, so I am not going to go buy a bunch of hard red berries. 02 absorbers and mylar bags, or Mason jars are my way of preservation of dry goods and dehydrated veggies/fruits..For meat, canning, or buying freeze dried.. Great video Christine! I know this is only five but let me add a few. Fats and proteins are very important. Don't forget extra medications both prescription and over-the-counter. If you're girl don't forget your girly needs and lots of first aid stuff. Also as far as grains are concerned flour does not last incredibly long maybe a couple of years. Brown rice maybe a year before it goes rancid. So make sure if you're buying those things that you're also using and replenishing them as you go so they don't go bad on you. If you're just getting started take a deep breath calm down and follow Christine's suggestions on buying what you can as you can. Just get started. God bless!

Great advice. I've been storing for over 20 years now. The best advice is to store what you eat. There are lists out there that tell you how much of this or that to store, but it's no good if you don't eat it. I've thrown out a lot of stuff, because we just don't eat it. AND use what you store. I recently had someone tell me they were eating out a lot because they don't want to use up their food storage. BTW, I love malto meal. I'm the only one in my family that does. Their loss.

You can get a big 50 gallon plastic drum (That is meant for holding drinking water) for $75 if you have the space for one in a basement or pantry etc. Quite a bit cheaper (And less space required) than stockpiling a bunch of gallon jugs or bottles. My favorite tip if you live in a buggy and/or rodent friendly area like NYC: pasta sauce jars hold exactly 1 pound of either rice or dried beans. Because the critters WILL eat through the plastic bags. A recent, creepy discovery is that mice love, love, love ketchup. So if you save fast food packets for packed lunches, keep them in a container or in the fridge. I can't tell you how disturbing it is to get up in the middle of the night for a glass of water and discover a mouse family ketchup orgy. Ugh😩

Since I live by myself but wanted to make sure I had water accessible, I got 3 cases of bottled water from Sam's. I also invested in a Brita pitcher so I can filter my tap water. I also invested in those large refillable water containers and refill those containers at those Watermill Express kiosks. You CAN refill with tap and use it for bathing, but if you want to be more environment friendly, the refill containers are heavy duty and can properly store drinking water. Plus the kiosks are super cheap to refill (1 gallon 25 cents, 3 gallon 75 cents, 5 gallons $1).

If you have plastic jugs from milk or juice, wash them well and fill from your tap. Also, laundry bleach can be used to purify water from questionable sources, one capful to a gallon, then let it stand for a couple hours with the cap off.

That's a good idea about stockpiling water. We couldn't bring our water storage with us when we left Idaho. Need to get it done ASAP.

Can you do a video further going into how to properly store specific items like paper products, soda, water and things you can store in a garage vs things you have to store in a regulated temp room?

The smaller storage "buckets" are easier to move about when full. I find the square 5 litre ones ideal. Got mine from Amazon.

Thank you! For people using the oxygen absorbers: Google what can/can’t be stored with them. Foods that aren’t extremely dry can develop botulism when left in an environment without oxygen 😬

Glad you mentioned water. Water is the most important thing to have and a lot of prepares don’t mention this. 😀 I try to have 12 cases at all times for my family because we live in a stormy state

Thank you sooo much for this video. I've been following videos like this for a month or so and I have so many Emergency Prep lists that seems like I cannot fulfill and my anxiety level is on 10 on how to properly shop to prep and store with a small space and feeling like I'm not getting enough every week. I wish I had of come across these videos a yr ago so I am feeling overwhelmed ot wanting to get caught up in the SHTF debacle that's coming so this video really helps!

First honey you pray for guidance and peace. Then buy a couple of things when you go to the store and try to enjoy. Worrying won’t get you no where. Be faithful that God is right there with you. Be blessed🙏❤️🦋

Went to Costco for our Easter food items. I always pickup water, canned chicken and chicken stock for storage. But a big surprise was gas is $3.35 today. Yes. I'm on it. Thank you for all your tips.
