I am praying this helps my cat. He had surgery Monday and got sent him Tuesday evening with the cone. He wasn't home 30 seconds and already had the cone off and all his bandages as well. The vet says he did fine with the cone the whole time he was there. Well I guess he would since he was sedated! He has never worn a collar for this exact reason. I'm concerned because the vet says he has to have the cone on for 5 days because he has 3 abdominal incisions due to the surgery for a blockage in his intestines. He has to remain strictly in a cage for 5 days as well and we can't pick him up. When I try to get the cone back on and the amount of time it takes him to get it off he is fighting and acting like a crazy cat. To me that seems even more dangerous for something to happen. I went and bought a healing vest and it's the same thing with it. It does take him a little longer to get that off though. I'm a nervous wreck and trying to do what the vet says to do but it just isn't working. First thing in the morning I'm going to buy the harness. Thank you for the suggestion!

The worry and anxiety I was going through with trying to watch him 24 hours a day the last few days was overwhelming. Unfortunately I couldn't find the correct type of harness in stores where I live so I ordered it online and it came this morning. Thanks to you I can get a little rest and ease my mind. I was wrong about him needing to wear the e-collar and be in a cage for 5 days. He has to for 14 days. There is no way he or I would have been able to deal with this without your help!! Wow - thank you so much. My cat had tail surgery and he was able to get the cone off with no problem at all even with the string tied to the right level of tightness. He's a very active cat. We then tried a harness that has the soft part in the front and the clasps on the back meant for a leash, along with a regular cat collar, along with the string, and that failed as well. We were running out of options and starting to lose our minds because the cone had to be on him for 2 weeks. The Cat-It harness saved us from 13 days of misery. One warning - while it worked very well, my cat managed to do 2 dangerous things: (1) he somehow got one part of the narrow cone edge stuck over his open mouth and could not get it off. He started freaking out as anybody would in that situation (like having something pulling your mouth open and you can't make it stop) and so we took the harness off and put it back on. He also had 4 instances where he was able to somehow get a clasp of the harness stuck onto his tooth even though the Cat-It neck collar part was snugly fit (I don't know how he was able to do that). That was another freak out moment where we had to unclasp from the ecollar to let the tooth free and then we reclasped to the ecollar. Things went much smoother after the first 2 days of his scary actions. My advice if you have a charismatic cat - stay in a room with him/her or at least somewhere where you can hear him/her (to be safe).

Thank you for your comment, this is the reason I made the video I needed something to work, and I was not finding an answer, so I created my own that worked for me, and I am so happy I have been able to help other people and cats. But all cats are different and I am glad it worked for you as well as it did!! More spunky cats are definitely harder and yes as you said need to be watched till they calm down and get used to it. You are the BEST !!! I have an Arabian Mau that I love more than anything. She is only about 3.5 years old and she's very skittish and always stays in my bedroom (I have two other cats also). She started acting weird Sunday and by Monday I knew something was wrong but I didn't know what. Finally on Monday I got some pics of what appears to be a small cut on her tail. She's indoor only and she kept kicking it. Then by Tuesday it appeared she pulled some kind of meat looking thing, but as I was trying to take pics of the wound before I knew it, it seems she had eaten the thing. Then it just looked worse but I didn't know how serious or what was going on. Wednesday I took her and found out it was a very deep wound and if she keeps it up she will get to her intestines. She had to be admitted, 2 scans/X-rays, IV antibiotics, sedation, and everything and to seal the wound which needed laser and stitches. Thursday they notified her me too late and I couldn't get her in time so I picked her up on Friday. She stayed on the bed with me sbd was doing fine. Then today Saturday she got it off. I read the horror stories of what pets can do to the incision site and one did so much damage they couldn't fix it and I was not gonna let that happen. I tried to grab her and she went under the bed and I saw her immediately start licking it. I flipped out and climbed under there but she just moved to another part. Then I just moved the whole bed with one hand and she ran into the closet. I got her and put it back in but it felt it still wasn't tight enough and I'm not going to be able to leave her side. Then I saw your video. Since I had already got it on her I decided to try and use her collar which she doesn't wear that cone way she doesn't choke herself. I'm gonna try to put that collar on her and then secure the e-collar to her regular collar. It should work because I can't take any chances. She was stitches that are very visible. THANK YOU SO MUCH, as I was terrified. I skipped through the other videos until on that seemed relevant. She's my first cat as an adult although we had dogs out whole life and two cats, this is my first and is my baby. You saved both our lives. G_d bless you.

My cat got very stiff, and got some problem leaning forward to drink and eat, so I just skipped the strap around his body, and just used the clip collar around his neck. That worked for me, much better than just that strap you should tie around the neck that he successfully untied over and over.

Just FYI they sell cones that are made out of softer materials and easier to get off/on on Amazon. My cat and I both liked it much better than the plastic one the vet gave us and they're all only like $10-$20!

My cat Wizard is a very sweet cat most of the time(LOL), but I created this video months after he went through his complications with surgery, and by this point he was already used to it. My kitten has burns on her stomach and my vet gave her a cone. She keeps taking it off but I have no harness and no way of keeping it on. I've placed it through the collar and tightened the collar but she can still take it off. Is there any other way I can do this without a harness?

I thought I might have to cancel my cat's surgery for the same problem. The vet said to order a cat harness. Could you explain what part went into the cone? I have not used a harness. What harness brand did you buy and what size. I have a 13 pound male cat long bodies about 2 pounds overweight. The vet technician told me to get the one on Chewy called Red Dingo Classic nylon black clip dog harness.

I used a Cat-it harness . As far as I know harnesses are adjustable to your cats size. But definitely don't get a kitten size one. The cone goes into the part where it goes on their neck maybe watch the video a couple more times. I hope this is useful for you this is why I made the video. I had problems and needed a solution too!!!

But even with them long, your cat should not be able to slide the cone past his /her head. They will try though, we had to tape up the cone parts where he could get his claw stuck as well!!

My cat currently has a tail injury and keeps pulling off the bandage at the tip. How long should I keep the cone on him? Overnight? I want to keep the cone off him so he can conveniently drink water and use the litter box.. But then who can watch him 24 hours..

I am sorry to hear about your cat, I am not a professional vet so I can not answer some of your questions. But for the water, I made sure I had a rectangle plastic bin from that he could drink from with his cone on. The bin was wide and long enough that the cone dipped into the water but it was just deep enough so that he could use his tongue to drink. The cat litter he had no problem using with the cone on, some litter got stuck on the end of the cone so I had to clean it off. But my cat box does not have a lid on it. I hope this helps. My poor baby had gotten surgery for a urinary blockage and is wearing his cone for 3-5 days. Poor Virgil is so depressed, I have to help him eat cause he gives up so fast but he seems to get to water very well. He hates his meds ,which I can relate to since I take meds daily too. And while I hate him being in this condition I’m glad it was him and not his brother Dante. He would have had his cone off within seconds of us going to bed. He’s proven this by always getting his collar off until we just gave up on it. They are indoor so that wasn’t so bad. These boys are Big boys too, not Maine coon sized but still bigger than normal so they are harder to give medicine to. Also, his brother is a jealous thing so I have to make sure he gets just as much attention so he doesn’t tackle his brother. Such spoiled boys.

I knew the e-collar’s at the vet were pricey, my cat was going to have dental surgery, so found one at a thrift store for $2 yahoo! Tech put it on, came home and my cat ran away to try and get that thing off, turned into a wildcat, he managed to destroy it in pieces the collar part still was on, but it did no good by that point,,,,.so he will not have anything around his neck,,,,,,every DIY a I’ve seen so far for cats…..the cats have been docile, that doesn’t work for all cats…….

It sure doesn't. My Fi Fi ripped that and the bandage off as soon as I got her home from the vet. I had to take her back, they put a plastic cone on, she came home and ripped that off and ran in the closet. I didn't see her for the whole day. I can't do it.
