I'll be 80 this year. After dealing with my mother's home when she passed I swore I wouldn't inflict the same on my children. Mom was a typical American consumer who acquired way more stuff than was necessary. (How many pairs of shoes with matching handbags does one woman need!?!) Not only have I done my kids a favor, but I've also made my own life easier by eliminating anything that wasn't useful or meaningful.

This was very encouraging! I'm struggling with several chronic health conditions, so on some days, just doing the basics is a challenge. I realized I've been beating myself up for the times I don't make it to doing 'above and beyond'', but I feel like I can breathe now and dare I say even feel proud that the basics are done every day even if I feel lousy? On my better days, I have been thinking of all these deep cleaning projects instead of breaking it down into doable steps, and yup, perfectionism paralysis is very real! Thanks, Cas!

I don’t have problem with tea towels because. I hang them on hooks by the loop/label that’s usually on them. If not, I snap a cafe curtain ring on them and hang them on the hooks with the others. They live on my door to garage, which isn’t too far to manage. Now, I DO have a messy linen closet problem. I am a butterfly 🦋 so I took the door off it long ago and have a curtain tied back instead. I am now trying to half neatly stuff the bottom sheet in a pillow case so it is all together…and so they don’t fall off the shelves. I don’t even use top sheets so those are folded on top shelf and available to use as curtains, tablecloths, etc. Thanks for the “don’t fold them anymore” hint. 👍👍

Yes, I am an “all or nothing” person. Perfectionist. I have been working on myself for years. When I go to clean a room, I want to it too top to bottom. I have made myself just do the perimeter and surfaces around stuff. Once I got all the rooms decluttered and in order, I have no problem keeping it that way now. But it used to be messy everywhere. I used to start over writing a post it note at work if I made a mistake. Now I just scratch through the mistake and keep writing. That was very hard to do but now it is easy. Decluttering my house was key so I thank you CAS because you are the one who started me on that journey. ❤

Thank you, Cas, for this post. I needed to hear that. I spent all of 2022 recovering from near death. Most of 2023 overcompensating for 2022 until I got sick again. I am on the OCD side of perfectionism. My mother believed being in 2nd place was no more than the first loser. I have been striving for perfection ever since. Yet, everything I've ever learned has come to me from a mistake I've made. As 2024 rolled in I gave up. Tomorrow, in 15-minute intervals, I am taking the garbage bag around the house and tossing stuff. I've had a memory bin for years that will be coming with me. Please keep this kind of content coming--you are a great cheerleader!

We have a s cond garage that was floor to ceiling and you had to climb mountains to get to anything! I have spent 4 years, got rid of about 50-60 percent of all of our belongings. Thank You 💐💗🎉 So Much. This is life changing !! 😳😄😁 Due to this video, have discovered all I've been taught is not true about " If something's worth doing you do it well , do your best". Many were taught to be perfectionists, despite nothing ever being perfect and we were told nothing we did was " good enough." Still felt same feeling of satisfaction and got more done by NOT doing my best. Thought the feeling came from KNOWING I'd done my best. I was wrong. The satisfied feeling was still there from the *attainment of the task, *not the effort. Very Grateful. Found channel yesterday. Bought your books. THANK YOU🌟💗🌟

7:40 that's a great practice, putting your toaster on a bin so the crumbs don't go everywhere when you move it. And you don't have to clean the cabinet shelf either. And the bin contains the cord and plug too! Brilliant! (Only my toaster oven will still live on the counter. The coffee maker lives in the cabinet on a tray to catch any drips.) 💖🌞🌵😷

I just came to the comments to ask why would someone put a toaster in a bin that's the same size as the toaster. Good answer!
@suzisaintjames
@suzisaintjames Жыл бұрын
@@DougAshley , thank you. Because the bin is plastic, I wouldn't use the toaster to toast bread in the bin as it might melt the plastic. Also, if I remember correctly, the bin just barely fit in the cabinet. 💖🌞🌵😷

I love this so much! We stopped folding our laundry about a year ago and will never go back. We only fold the bathroom towels because you see them.😂 We just got rid of over 30 trash bags of donations and actual trash in our house over the past 3 weeks and we aren't done yet! Already it's so much easier to keep the house clean with 5 kids.

I am 68. I grew up being told, "If a job is worth doing, it's worth doing RIGHT." I never felt like I was doing it right. Add that to ADHD freeze, and there's a LOT that has gone undone far too long. I cannot put my towels or silverware away and let the cupboard or drawer not look perfect. As each of my parents passed, both in different states, their stuff has ended up in and all over my house. I'm drowning in a giant mish mash pile.

This totally explains my mom who always tells me she has no time to declutter her very cluttered home. I have offered my services to her and hopefully she will take me up on it soon (I am a decluttering/low-carbon footprint certified life coach). In the late 1980s/early 1990s I remember her home was so clear of clutter and way cleaner. I clean her house for her but it is like. . ."Hey, we've lived here 50 yeras and accumulated way more than we realized and LIKE our stuff." She really knows where EVERYTHING is even though it is a disaster. It is so gross to me haha. She let me declutter under her sink in her kitchen which is way neater. . .one section down, too many others to go. Wish me luck. Loved this video.

I tell myself to do "good enough". One way I cheat is give myself 5 seconds to fold each piece of laundry. Then I immediately put it away. That keeps me from having clean laundry pile up.

I love your videos! They have really helped me make progress in decluttering now that all my kids are in college. I have come to the conclusion that I must be a perfectionist. Once I do start though I find I make very quick progress. I have also referred to myself as a recovering pack rat. I am looking forward to making my goal of getting our whole house in order.

Love this. My rule when I got home from work was to do 7 things. Put in a load of laundry, put a stamp on an envelope, pick up a blanket etc. By Saturday, my house looked clean and over half the chores were done for the weekend because I would try to include one chore in my 7 things. Now that my kids are in their own homes, I don't have 7 things to do each day (yay!).

Cass this entire video is sheer, unadulterated genius. I feel like a whole new world of possibilities has opened up. And im gonna adopt a new personal motto. "I'm Shelly, and I suck." 😂 But seriously ive suffered from perfection paralysis for sooo many years but didn't know what it was, why it was happening or that there was a name for it. I can't wait to just get started sucking (lol) and then after a while look back and see how much I've gotten done.

I live in a small 2 br apartment. I consider myself a minimalist and declutter semi regularly. I recently went on a decluttering kick… I came out with FOUR garbage bags of trash and donations. I still have about half the apartment to go! 🤯 So the tip is, even if you think you don’t need to declutter, pull stuff out and pretend you’re moving. You’d be surprised how much stuff you’re keeping in corners, drawers, and closets.

I have already commented here once, but I need to come back and say this video has been the most helpful video of my life as far as messy house/perfectionism. I have gotten so much of my house organized recently. Because I am just putting things in containers and putting them aside to detail later, I’m not worried about having to be able to do everything all at once. I just need to get it’s less messy and then go back to it when I have time to do the detail part. I’ve gotten so far in my organization since this video was posted.
