Self-deprecating jokes to an extreme just ruins the mood. My dad is overweight and he always makes jokes of how fat he is (when literally no one is paying attention to that) and it just makes everyone awkward; and he doesn't just stop but keeps going.
@SRosenberg2033 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your dad specifically *isn't* doing what they describe in this video. I'm just guessing, but based on your comment it kind of seems like your dad *IS* insecure about his weight, but he's just trying to head off the jokes that he expects to get from other people by making them himself first, even when the other people he's with had no intention of making those jokes at all. I used to do something similar, not about my weight, but about other aspects of my appearance that I used to be more insecure about, and it took me a while to even understand what I was doing and why, before I could try to move past it.

I've always found self-deprecating jokes to be a fine line and true masters at it know how to walk it with the perfect balance. I think it's mainly about having the ability to laugh at yourself and not take yourself too seriously when making a mistake or looking like a fool - and others will laugh with you (rather than at you) and you'll feel more authentic and relatable. But yes, there is such a thing as being overly self-deprecating to an extreme that becomes no longer funny and more awkward and pathetic than anything. It's hard to really learn that balance but a lot of the better comedians seem to do this naturally, and I'm trying to get better at it myself.

The bad way to do it is to make mean, overt, or constant jokes about things you're actually insecure about in yourself. It makes people super uncomfortable. It stems from the mindset that if you get there first, other people won't be able to hurt you. You present yourself as an ally in their making fun of you before they even start doing that, and in that way you think you're reclaiming control over it. But the thing is, people - especially nice people you actually want to get close to - actually DON'T want to make fun of you, are NOT thinking the mean things you're thinking about yourself, and in fact do NOT want to be allied in that. So it kind of presumes the worst about them, not about you. You're putting them in an unpleasant position, they might feel obliged to laugh at things just because you're saying them about yourself, but because it's obvious you're insecure about it (because you're being mean, overeager, or ironic), they might feel obliged to reassure or compliment you or avoid hurting you, and in general it's just super awkward and uncomfortable and counter-productive. Bottom line: vast majority of people are nice, and a great deal nicer than you are to yourself. Give them a chance to be that.
@SRosenberg2033 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Even if that might appear on the surface to be what is being described in this video, it's totally different because it comes from a place of deep insecurity rather than confidence.

Living in a very judgemental environment can really play on your mind but turns out they are the ones who are insecure. Colleagues often “rate” me by the most obscure of things. When one found out what car I drove, he immediately went on a 5 min monologue of how unexpected it was of me to drive a basic car as if it was wrong of me to be seen in such a thing. When I gave my colleagues a lift and drove safely, they again commented on how slow I am, when they were the ones who were late for the appointment making me wait for an extra 15 mins. Judgemental snobs are everywhere because they need to feel superior over others. Laying a marker on you is their way of giving themselves self-worth to boost self esteem.

The videos keep saying things like make jokes about your insecurities, make praises for other people and etc, while these instructions are easy to follow and intuitive, from my experience these are just beating around the bushes. From my perspective, the one thing that is hard to practice, abstract and ambiguous yet something that is at the heart of the problem is that we just don't love ourselves. This is really hard if you're not attractive, which is true in my case but after I started seeing other unattractive people(usually comedians like Ken Jeong) living just ok like other people, the thought that maybe living like this isn't too bad had a great impact on me.

This video is exactly what I needed! I live in a foreign country and the only people I know are my classmates who I consider to be my family here. We've been close for more than 3 years and I trusted them so much. Then one friend started to become passive-aggressive with me and it affected me a lot. I was being abused the whole time without realising it and when I finally tried to defend myself they all turned against me. I tried to talk to her and she told me that she never loved and she only pretended to. I'm still in shock and sad because I really loved her and thought she did too, but I guess that's how life goes, we just learn things from our experiences..

So sad. But you are still a Gem. With or without her.

when i came across this channel, i instantly subscribed because it made me realize that i can't just watch videos and expect to become confident overnight. i have to put in the work and make it happen. the truth is there will be times where you will crash and burn, but that's just part of it. at the end, you'll look back and see that those times that you failed were the ones that really made you the person you are today. thank you! and have a awesome day everyone!!☺😁

Any advices? Cause I’m kind of tired of always caring about what others think and it’s kind of making me tired and stressed
@rachelgee78942 жыл бұрын
@@nha4318 people care WAY less about you than you think, no offense. 😅 They won't remember what you did next week, let alone next month, so do what you want! A thought about you in their head means nothing. The guy that thinks you're unattractive? He's more unattractive than you. The person who judges you for not having a spotless home? Is likely judging you from a cluttered mess. You wouldn't take financial advice from broke people, so why do you care what a bunch of random people with their own problems think?

Let me quickly write this, I've seen hundreds of videos because I terribly suffer from insecurities. And no video actually is there that I found necessarily helpful. But, for some reason, this video straight goes to my head, probably because of Pete Davidson. So, thank you.

I use to struggle with being stiff in most social situations and at first the laughing method was really painful for me. I was deeply insecure, and while I had other things I had to figure out internally, letting myself laugh when other people joke about things I was sensitive about has gone a long way in helping me unwind and be chill I social situations. Thank you for these videos, they are helping me so much!

Pete Davidson is one of the most genuine personalities in the entertainment industry. He doesn't do anything but be himself and that's what people are attracted to. We should all strive to be who we are and not what we think people want us to be. I love the way he turns his flaws into strengths and not take life so serious.

I clicked on this video out of curiosity and this is the first year I have made many friends. I took social traits such as being very honest, genuine, and complementary towards other people from people i really liked talking to. Everything this guy has said in this video is true

Can you do a video on Kevin O’Leary? When you watch older videos of him, he’s awkward and quiet, but when you watch him on his vlogs/shark tank he’s incredibly captivating and one of the best story tellers imo. I’d love to see a breakdown on how he is able to captivate an audience, whatever it be about something as mundane as talking about his watch collection or as exciting as discussing his first job, he is able to make it entrancing to watch regardless of the subject matter. I would love to see a breakdown of him, thank you

I care too much what others think of me even though i know i’m better than them. I think it’s called social phobia. However, to complete my responsibilites, I have to step out of my comfort zone and face those people. I am proud of myself for this. But I wish I could be more reckless and cheeky…
