Crying is common in children with autism and without autism. Regardless though, many parents ask, “why is my child crying?” Crying problem behaviors usually always correlate with demands being too high and reinforcement being too low. When a child is crying, it’s almost never a good idea to ignore the crying and continue to place demands on the child. Many parents don’t know how to handle screaming, or how to handle crying in toddlers and tend to act in a way that only worsens the problem behavior.
Crying should not be something that we accept as part of autism, or in any child. If a child is crying, there is going to be little to no motivation from them to stop crying if demands don’t change. That’s why today’s video I’m outlining steps you can take to resolve crying in kids with autism.

When I was in school, I cried a lot, especially in math class. After graduating high school in 2015, I heard about this technique where you fold the assignment sheet in half and after completing the top half of the assignment, the student can take a five minute break, then move onto the next half. If at any point the student starts to break down and cry, I suggest you have them take deep breaths (Weil's 4-7-8 method is a really good breathing technique), count to 10 backwards, or splash cold water on their face. After the student regains emotional control, explain each step in only a few simple words, or do a few of the math problems together, until the concept sinks in.

My 5 year old son is verbal. He can communicate when he is in pain. He cries during 3 instances. 1. when a toy is taken away or goes missing 2. When someone tells him no or corrects him. 3. When dad gets up at dawn and makes noise.
@marybarbera
@marybarbera 16 күн бұрын
Yes, these are pretty common times but we can offer supports to prevent the crying. When a toy is taken, is there reinforcement or alternatives to help redirect. When something goes missing, offering high level reinforcement for choosing something else. Being very positive and avoiding no unless it is a safety issue, rather reinforcing when he is doing what we want . These are examples of supporting and preventing.

I disagree that having the attitude that crying is a bad thing around children. This can do so much harm to them. I was told I was bad for crying and made to feel shame for it, and that caused me so many problems. It made me afraid to talk about my emotions, afraid to go to funerals, visit dying relatives because the shame for crying was so strong. Even as an adult I cry when I get upset and I cannot control it because I try so hard not to. It made me mad when you said crying is never a good thing. There is nothing whatsoever wrong with crying, and if a child is crying it might have something to do with what the adult did or does not understand. One needs to talk to the child, and watch their own behavior and not be so focused on a child's crying. Showing emotions is a good thing. Find out what is causing it, talk to the child, and help them express their emotions with words. Most of all show some empathy and compassion. No one was ever allowed to console me when I was crying even though I didn't really do anything wrong. I just got in trouble for crying or dropping a fork sort of thing.

I agree that we should never shame anyone for crying. My intent for this video was to show parents and caregivers that, when a child is crying a lot during therapy, it's NOT good therapy.

So from last week I started to took him to the school, some times when we arrived at school he jumped out from the car and running towards his teacher, some time he waited me to go with him to the teacher, sometimes holding my hands until getting him in the class room but when I want to leave he started crying. In the end of the last week after he dressed his clothes he refused to going to school with crying a lot. I don’t know what is reason and how we can deal with this situation. He is 9 years old now

im 11 and in 6th grade at the moment. i have had 3 meltdowns on the same day (the day i posted this) onew was in homeroom where we have math too. i was doing pretty well until i turned to the back side. i then had a meltdown (note: no one noticed bc i was doing this quietly). second meltdown was in Theology (religion class) when i mentioned i dont want to be picked to read a book we were reading out loud. i have problems with speaking in public (with a big enough group of pople such as our class) so i had a silent meltdown. but my class mates in the area we were in noticed and told the teacher about it she called the counselor so i could calm down. and i did. third time was in skills class (dont know what they teach in there) we were doing a sheet on vocab. each one would have a short sentence and it would have a word (or 2 or 3) in bold letters. and there would be options to what we thought or knew what it meant (there were 4 options for each one). i started having another silent meltdown about this because i couldnt understand what most of the words were. i got a few of them. but thats pretty much all i have to say

@Lubem Tv I just want to inform that there is nothing wrong with being autistic. It is positive to be different and think differently. For example Einstein may have been autistic. This does not mean everyone have as high intelligence as Einstein. Everyone is different. However, if your child is autistic, he should be allowed the be who he wants. Autism is not anything to be afraid or worried for, we just work and think different than other people. So please if your son is autistic do not treat him differently.

Its not crying that my son does- its more of a God-Awful WHINE that is more like a bratty kid not getting his way cry- it's such a trigger for me bc i have my own disorder issues with other things. Noises affect me too and can send me into serious irritation and being short tempered. Whining and crying is the number one trigger for me- especially when it's just bc he disagrees with something or doesn't get something. Bc he's not talking much, he does this screechy whine , and i try to calmly remind him to use his words, and i say the words it appears he is looking for, and sometimes i can get him to try and pronounce the words and others he just shakes his head yes. He absolutely says no when he means no now, at least like every other 2 yr old! But it would be extremely helpful if there was a channel or therapist or SOMETHING for parents of special needs kids, who are ALSO suffering from our own disorders- mental or developmental. I Dont want to ever be mean to my son, but after several times of trying to stop it, i can only take so much before i raise my voice- which works to stop the behavior, but i worry im only hurting him somehow, and definitely dont want that. I dont want him to end up borderline bc of my behaviors. Its really tough having mental issues, and even tougher having a child with them ALSO.

A child I work with is only two and is diagnosed on the spectrum. She doesn’t talk, and shows little to no verbal understanding. She cries for hours on end with just brief breaks in between for several hours. Her sensory bin doesn’t soothe her, she just wants to be held which I can’t do as I also have other kids. She will stop crying if held but other then that cries none stop, it’s hard to figure out how to help her since she’s so young and can’t talk. Any ideas????

It is challenging for sure. She likely needs more specialized support. We have to work to prevent the crying. Her parents may want to investigate if she is having pain with her doctor.

My point is that, if you're child is crying during therapy and not having any fun, the therapy isn't being done correctly.

What about just the opposite of what you’re saying. Plenty of reinforcement and not that much stimulation. And she has already ate and she’s just sitting there and then starts to cry and just Bellers out. We’re trying to comfort her let her be. If we put her down she just stands there and cries.

I would first rule out any medical issues and bring it up to her pediatrician. Next, I would highly recommend taking my toddler course, where I can teach you how to engage her at the learning table, increasing her language, and decrease problem behaviors like crying + more.
