Been told you have degenerative disc disease? This sounds scary, but I’ll explain why it shouldn’t freak you out, and what to do about it.
IN THIS VIDEO
00:00 - Intro
01:11 - What is Degenerative Disc Disease?
02:55 - How Does DDD Occur?
06:30 - First Strategy - Core Stability
07:45 - Second Strategy - Decompress Your Spine
08:40 - Third Strategy - Train Spinal Mobility
Here’s the thing: EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN ALIVE A FEW DECADES HAS DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE.
Research has estimated that over 50% of people above age 30 would have evidence of disc
degeneration on imaging, even if they don’t have symptoms.
Overtime, with the constant forces going through your spine as you move around, your fibrous, gel-filled
intervertebral discs will shrink.
This reduced space may cause symptoms, including pinched nerves or muscle spasms, or it may not
cause any issues at all.
There are several strategies you can take to help you reduce back pain from degeneration and improve
spine health.
[6:30] The first strategy is to work core stability.
Your core plays a big role in stabilizing the lumbar region. If these muscles aren’t firing properly, your
spine might move in ways that it shouldn’t - meaning you might be prone to painful muscle tweaks and
pulls.
[7:45] The second strategy is to decompress your spine. Hanging upside down, by your arms, or just laying over a swiss ball can all cause spinal decompression and encourage fluid to re-enter the discs.
[8:40] Finally, you’ve got to train spinal mobility.
Just like any other tissues in your body, your discs respond and grow stronger when they have
appropriate stresses imposed upon them. While excessive forces from poor posture can lead to
degeneration, smart, progressive forces can improve the strength of your spine
.
Remember that degeneration is inevitable. And, a whole lot of people out there have degeneration, but
no pain.

The difference between those with back pain and those without often boils down to posture, core
stability, and movement patterns - all things you can address!

@@luckibuck1384 Ice from lumbar all the way up to your neck, I have a flat ice pack, I move it from my lower back, up to my head, slowly. As I'm feeling less pain, I move the ice to another area. Time consuming, nevertheless, it has helped me. I have scoliosis as well, So, can feel pulling of my spine in both directions when the pain is bad, Norco as a pain med, which only takes the edge off, ice as well on really bad days

I was diagnosed in 22. All my doctor offered were pills I did not want. I had to be the one to suggest physical therapy. It is temporary relief. But I need a physical regimen . They don't offer one. I think that would put them out of business if I find a good one. I will see what you can teach me.

This video is super helpful. Advice I was once given for my DDD when I was in my early 40s was "I wouldn't lift anything heavy". No other info or education about it! I left there thinking I was decrepit and life would be limited. Proper, easy to understand education with visuals is important, as this video displayed. I have subscribed now and will look for exercises I can do post physical therapy which ends soon for me. I want to get stronger too, beyond PT, and finding how to do that seems challenging.

I am 65 years old and have been diagnosed with severe disc degenerative disease especially around L5 and S1. I recently had a right Total Hip Replacement which went very well and recovery was quick and complete. I am very active and have only mild soreness in my lumbar spine, but it is gradually becoming more persistent, though the pain itself is not worse. I also have mild rightward scoliotic curve. I'm glad I found your video. It's given me ideas on how I can keep it from impacting my daily activities. Thanks!

Was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease in 2009 and I did think it was a death sentence, death to my career, death to my daily work. I went back to school to get out of the casino work routine witch was hard on my back, being on my feet 8-10 hours a day. Working in warehouses didn't help at all 13 hour days lifting, turning, and throwing boxes. This video gives me hope! I had no idea you could strengthen discs/tissue in the lower lumbar. When in physical therapy and going to the gym I thought I was just building muscle around the disc to hold back up or, as you said 'core stability. Thanks and, yes, I have subscribed to your channel. Will come back daily in this time of pandemic, YMCA, favorite gym in my area (Tacoma/Seattle, WA) has been closed for almost 2 months. Ugh. Thanks

Yes, was told by my chiro that I have 'bad disc degeneration.' And he kept using those words until I felt dreadful. It's not helpful if you don't know why you have it and there's no cure. Going to correct my posture but also wanted to look at videos (like yours) that actually offer hope. I went in to this chiropractor for sinus help! I think the mind is very suggestive, so I don't want to start seeing my body as 'bad' OR 'degenerated.' It won't help me. And I have to say THANK YOU. For being so positive and supportive, and normalising this situation for people. No one can benefit from being told their body is 'bad.' But everyone can benefit from the exercises you've linked here.
@PrecisionMovementCoach
@PrecisionMovementCoach 3 жыл бұрын
Jennifer, what you've said in the 1st paragraph here I think is so important for people to realize - certain words and labels can be lived into and this can become reality. When we hear the word "disease", we often associate this (perhaps unconsciously) with diseases like cancer. And DDD is not anywhere near on the same level. The question is, "Why do I have DDD in the first place?" Often that's a movement/activation issue, which can be fixed. The DDD may not reverse, but there will be full function and no pain. So who cares? Everyone's stuff wears down from its peak over time. It's called aging. But the wear and tear doesn't equal pain or dysfunction.

I am 58. About two years ago began experiencing low back pain with any sort of movement such as making the bed, carrying laundry. I also had severe pain in the balls of my feet and had trouble walking any distance. My blood work did not show anything significant so I had to wait 6 months to see a rheumatologist even though x-rays showed inflammation in my feet and ankles. I finally had a diagnosis of seronegative inflammatory disease and medication helped my feet but my back pain just gets worse. I finally got an mri a week ago which showed “multilevel lumbar spondylosis” and “moderate to severe spinal canal stenosis at l4-5”. No one has called me to discuss these findings - I am just reading the report and trying to make sense of it. I have 5 bulging discs at different locations. The rest of the report is difficult for me to understand . I want to be able to help myself at home and do something rather than waiting another year for the medical system to decide what to do. I am so worried about my future and do not want to end up immobile, getting nothing out of life. This is how I found your video. I am hoping it will help me. Thank you for posting.

Great! This gives me real hope. I have been going through muscle spasms, cervical spondylosis, painful legs, waist and back for years. Am 55 this year. It got worse this year and it's affecting my daily activities. Most times am always weak. The MRI I had just few days agp shows degeneration of all the parts of my spine from c3. I have been placed on pain relievers and neck collars both hard and soft have been recommended for me. I am lucky to have stumbled on this video and it gives me so much hope. I thought DDD is an indication that I will soon be paralised or will die soon. Your exercise recommendations, I will gather strength to practice. It involved an 8 week program of 3 days/week for 15 minutes as well as supplements, exercises and a lumbar back adjustment once a week. Now that the program is over, I will continue with my exercises and work with a physiotherapist in the hopes of continued improvement. I am on Prolia for the ostioporosis.

Hi Eric, I just watched your video. Thank you for the upload. I have subbed too. I was a dancer most of my life. In 2016 I was in a horrible car crash(I was a Trauma 1, and almost didnt make it.) So my injuries were quite significant....Recovery has taken YEARS. With that said I havent been very active at all, and was diagnosed with DDD. I started to workout lightly and also changed the way I eat(more plant based). I was doing the “Pelvic Thrust Up”(before I watched this video) exercise 2 seen in this video. I had discomfort and great tightenss, but kept on doing it for a few more counts. I dont know what happened, but I feel like ive broken my back. Ive been in bed for days with Sciatic Nerve pain and I cant bend over or walk correctly. 😳 I do get burning and a numb feeling in my legs. Im at a loss as what to do. Im scared now to try anything to ease the pain, and I dont like medicine; however Ive been taking a lot of Motrin as the pain is starting to make me angry(lol) as its effecting my quality of life. Main T-Spine injuiers were/are lower to almost the S-Spine, and my entire C-Spine(the exercising I did that one night has turned into a nightmare.) Any suggestions or videos that could help? Also, is it true that eating Tomatoes can cause inflamation? I know this is a lot of info and you may not be able to answer it. Thank you.

This is very helpful information! For 5 weeks I suffered from an acute and extremely painful sciatica. The MRI revealed 4-levels of lumbar disc degeneration and bulging disc. Your info is helping me understand the different levels of recovery. Thank you so much! I want to add that I have had a very poor posture (exactly how you describe it) for most of my life (50 years) and the lack of daily proper hydration is also a culprit. I looked up your video after moving my home and having pain after lifting my heavy things… I’m 36, and was diagnosed with DDD of the cervical and lumbar spine last year. My imaging shows that my spine is perfectly straight, with no curvatures, throughout my entire spine. I am 5’4”, 120 lbs, and have been doing yoga since 8th grade. There must have been an acute injury in the past, like whiplash… either way, I am scared for my future health.

DDD+fibro, among other things. That combo demands very regular but very mild exercise-- it took a long time to get the balance right, I was prone to over exercise, get knocked out for days, repeat. Was finally in a really good routine before the pandemic... now it's kind of back to digging out. At least I know what I need to be doing again, I guess.

Hello, I'm 55 and been diagnosed with DDD but had it for 15 years, only got a CT done a week ago. Bad pain on left side but the CT says right which is wrong. Meds and exercise keep it bearable but it always comes back and lasts for months regardless of stretching and exercise. It will in most cases get worse as people age, it's always there, like a toothache, some days better than others. These exercises help but don't stop its onset. Great video Cheers

I had a hiking injury almost 2 years ago. I got 3 MRI’s of my entire back and the result was I have degenerative disc disease. I went to an orthopedic doctor who said he didn’t see any specific injury in my back. He told me to begin to lift weights and to strengthen my back muscles this way, and to even continue my weight lifting thru the pain. He said increasing my back muscle strength will help with my disc disease. I’ve been lifting weights for a month now, and doing lots of stretching...no reduction in the pain as of yet...

I was “diagnosed” a few years back. Had sciatic nerve issues, numb foot, etc. Was given pain meds and received epidurals. It was downhill pretty quick and I feel the pain meds although work fantastic, have a sharp drop in efficiency the longer you take because you end up taking more and then feel like death if you don’t take them. The epidurals helped tremendously. I have stopped taking pain meds, and epidurals and slowly replaced with exercise and specific routines. I feel MUCH better not taking the meds in a natural and mental way. I still have to watch what I do, and every once in a great while on a bad day I may take half a med, but it’s once every 6 months or so. For me strengthening was huge. The doctor definitely made it sound like dooms day when I first found out, but it took me 4 years to even get diagnosed to what was going on. I couldn’t agree more with you’re video. For those of you out there that are struggling, dig deep and work through the exercises. Taking the meds is the easy way out, but trust me when I say it only makes you weaker and you will end up having worse symptoms.

I am in a similar situation but they now refuse to give me the pain meds. I’m not a drug seeker and I would not abuse them. It might be the area and a year later but I am in a lot of pain my L1 disc is severe degradation, bulging disc, pinched nerve, arthritis, and bone spers. I went to pain management last week they are going to give me cortisone shots next and most likely a disc replacement or fusion which I’m looking forward to. I am in severe pain I have been working on light duty for several months but they have mandatory overtime because we lost a few people due to moving and no one really wants to work there anymore. I mostly set in a office char without breaks or lunch and most the time I’m am there for 16 hours at a time 96 - 125 hours every two weeks.

You are so right Ken. However, I think often times depression kicks in, this is when pain meds may be needed. Def, not the answer, But did help in my case, as depression got the best of me. Almost, a month without any meds other than over the counter 2x a day. I swear, I really thought I was dying, wasn't sure which was worse the pain or the withdrawal symptoms. Knowing your body and feeling mentally better with each day helped. Still in a lot of pain, decided on a cure as opposed to a band-aid, really focused on eating better and exercise. Found a neurosurgeon in Florida. Dr. Dean Lin. He has helped many people. I keep thinking,I'm not getting any younger, it's time to do something

I was diagnosed with DDD in my lower back and neck six years ago. The doctors have given me steroid cocktail injections in the past. I have had many injections. They never really helped, only temporarily. In addition to the injections I was prescribed Percocet/Oxycodone pain meds. They do help, but only mask the pain, which can be dangerous. I have stopped both. However, on rare occasions, such as now, when the pain gets unbearable, I will take a pain med. This video was shared with me by a friend. I have been doing some light exercises that seem to help, but will try your methods. Thank you for this video. It is very informative.

I’m sorry about your girl. I suffer every day. I’m doing some stretching and light exercises. Walking is excellent! Any movement is good. Getting oxygen and blood flow to the discs to lubricate them is very important. Laying around too much is not good. Sitting is bad too. Resting is important, but constant rest will make it worse. I am taking supplements; Turmeric capsules, Vitamin D3, Vitamin K, and others. I don’t take calcium because I’m susceptible to kidney stones, but ask her doctor if she can take a calcium supplement. I also have an Inversion Table that I use. I wish her all the best. Exercise and movement are her friends. Thanks for the comment.

@@abi3937 I can well understand brother. The leg pains are so frequent. But the good thing is that my doc said that at our age (I guess till 32-33) this condition is reversible. I mean DDD. Other docs who are only into westernised medicines and findings don't believe this. But it IS REVERSIBLE. But yes, it can take months or even a year. Depending upon how much u work hard towards it. My doc has asked me not to jump, dance, bent forward, walk for long or do anything that may put strain on my spine. We have to heal our spines and the empty cushions and that will happen only when we take adequate rest. Also, if you're overweight, lose weight. Being. Heavy again puts stress on spine. Only Yoga and healthy diet can cure it. Baaki, I haven't tried it yet, but Ayurveda claims to have a complete cure of degeneration. It explains how and why it can be cured. I got an xray today showing that my 2 lower disc space is much shorter than it should be. I don't feel any pain even though I have been working out for 2 years now doing heavy weight lifting. Nothing crazy since I was diagnosed with mild scoliosis in the past, so I only lift progressively heavier and not much when I'm tired, always being careful trying to have the best form. Both the xray doctor and the orthopedic said that this is permanent damage and there is nothing you can do about it and that I should quit heavy weights at all. Now watching your videos and your take on the matter confirmed my opinion about doctors that I had for a very long time now. Most of them stopped learning since they finished their school and they don't put any effort into improving their knowledge anymore so they spread misinformation. Never trust the doctors 100 per cent, always ask for a second opinion and always do your own research.

Hi! Jump roping will likely speed up the process until you are able to do it in a way that does not exacerbate the issue. Leg lifts should be safe. Thank you so much ! My MRI showed disc dehydration with disc bulge at L5-S1. My leg went numb after doing 400 reps ( 4 rounds of 100 sets) of light pilates ring for my inner thighs and then I started experiencing back inflammation on daily basis. I feel the reason for my disc dehydration is the wrong diet my trainer gave me. I weigh 53 kg and my height is 158 cm. ( female 45 with very delicate bone structure ) I didnt want to loose weight just tone body , core work and build muscles but she encourage me to loose weight. I went from 53 to 45 kg...and it didnt feel good. I dont think i needed to loose weight , maybe just 1-2 kilos not more. I feel the wrong diet along which made my body weak and kettle bell exercises caused injury. Can I ever go back to normal routine of light to moderate weight lifting? my ankles even flare up when I walk on a straight threadmill. I am just doing some Qi gong exercise for now... I’ve had back pain for nearly two years now but this year things have deteriorated significantly. I’m 52 years old and have two small children who need their dad to be there for them but the pain is so debilitating. My mri report stated I had ‘multi level degenerative changes in my lumbar spine’. I’ve also been told I’m not a candidate for surgery too. I spent a small fortune getting an assessment with Dr Stuart McGills right hand man in London and was giving the usual core strengthening exercises which have ended up making me worse, much worse. Now I can barely leave the house. Finding the right person out there to help you is the key, something I have failed to find. Luckily, when I lie down my symptoms ease significantly but you can’t live your life in bed. Sorry for the long post.

The pain is now constant, somewhat like a mild Charlie horse down to my ankle. The pain starts in my left cheek down to my ankle. Any ideas on how to correct that?

Hello! I was diagnosed with DDD 15 years ago, but had had symptoms for about 10 years before that. My spine was all twisted, too. I've gotten it mostly straightened out, via chiropractic. And because I was diagnosed through a chiropractor, they did not recommend surgery, but my regular doc brings that up, every now and then. I'd rather not have to do that, because I don't want to be cut into and fused and I am more interested seeing what can be done, without that. Yes, it's a scary diagnoses, especially with the idea of aging and more deterioration happening. I just turned 45, yesterday, but I have been feeling a lot older in my body. I'm trying to release 85 pounds and I know that would help a lot, but my weight has been very stubborn. I definitely work out, when I can (in between recovering from injuries) and I swim, walk, and do HIIT with weights. I do some weight-lifting, but it's not the power lifting that you're referring to, fortunately. I tend to feel much better, when I do work out, regularly. My posture is generally pretty good, except for when I do my art stuff and I have to bend over a table. I've tried to elevate my surface, so hopefully I won't be doing as much bending. I guess I have my head down when cooking, too. I see a physical therapist regularly. I knew some about core strength, but the way you explained it is helping me to understand that, further. I do the cat-cow, the supine twist, and I lay over a pillow to try and open things up and compensate for the stuff where I have my head down, but I didn't know about the Swiss ball. I will look into getting one of those. Thanks for this video!

I was diagnosed with DDD back in 1998. I was told to take pain killers and muscle relaxers. I was not going to be a pill popper. I did several treatments with an excellent Chiropractor who was able to relieve the pain to a certain level. I went to a sports medecine acupuncturist 3 times a week for 3 weeks. It was the best treatment ever. He was able to relieve 90% of the pain. That was 14 years ago and I haven't had constant pain since. I still have episodes of pain, but with a back brace and Ibuprofin I can manage.

I was diagnosed with degenerative disc diseases in lower back and then the upper neck area, I was told by my pain management doctor that there is no cure for it. I had to leave my job as a nurses Assistant, because of all the lifting we have to do which contribute to this.

I was diagnosed with DDD 17 years ago, by an MD. I was 40 at the time. He said the only option was surgery, and asked me if I was ready for it. I said no, and he said to come see him when I was ready.

23 years old. Had an accident at 16. Not DDD diagnosed but they found verbatim: multiple level disc degeneration. Pain onset was about at 19. Couldn’t walk for a bit. Went away with planks, pull ups and performitis stretch. Biking made it worst and I loved biking over 15 miles. Pain would go and come and sometimes I couldn’t walk. I thought it was sciatica, guess not. Now the pain is constant! I can walk but I feel like shit! Hopefully this helps! I’m afraid I wont be able to snowboard, road trips(due to sitting too long) and other things down the road. Made this comment 1:46 seconds in. Will certainly see the whole video and see how it can help me!

Hi Eric Wong; a friend of mine sent me this video to look at due to the fact that I’ve been told precisely what you’ve mentioned. You asked for anyone to leave you a message if we’ve ever been told we’ve got this very problem. I was told yrs back that I have this along with arthritis. This is too much for me to handle alone! I’m looking at your video just to see what you’d really recommend for people like us. My friend bought me a “specific memory foam pillow” to keep me sitting upright while in my rocking chair, have a mesh back support for making my sit upright & much more straighter while sitting on a regular kitchen chair. Doing the best I can with the items I have in my home now. Don’t know how you can respond back to this comment! Would like to connect with you about this issue.

Hi! Thanks for writing to us. Are you asking about sitting arrangement? This is tricky business because everyone is different. Addressing the root cause of the issue is more involved. Luckily we've set everyting up for you in the Low Back Pain Solution program. Read more about it in the video description. Check it out and let us know if you have any more questions :) - Coach Joshua, Team PM

I have moderate degeneration & arthritis in my lower back & neck, The past 6 months I was mostly bed ridden which really aggravated my body, I feel a lot of pain & stiffness in my lower back & hips I am always stretching trying to adjust my posture and now that I am finally able to move I am trying to get my muscles stronger however it's difficult because of pain, very frustrating for me since I am typically such an active person. Anyway thank you for your video!

I stumbles upon your video. I am in my 50's and I was diagnosed with degenerative disc Disease a few years back. After being diagnosed with this I went into depression and gained a lot of weight. Today I am in a lot of pain and need to loose weight. I don't know if you will read this but I could use some advise on how I can exercise without causing more pain so I can loose weight. Your advise is appreciated. Thank you!

In 2008 at the age around 53 I was diagnosed with discs generation of L4 n L5. I had a horrible time. I was put on traction for a month or so but then with the degeneration of discs came neurological problem. My whole butt area would be on fire..burning literally!. Then again, of course, the degeneration grows more and I ended up with kyphosis. Physiotherapist and strengthening exercises continues. But, now I am trying out your techniques. Hopefully, i will do well following your instructions. Thank you so much.

I got a car accident about 11 years ago and it was so difficult for me to walk however overtime I've been having a lot of back pain. I started exercising last year and noticed that my knees & ankles were constantly swelling and paining and my hips were paining as well.. I went to the doctor at first I was told it was bursitis but after further examination I was told that my spine is straight which causes back spasms & the degenerative disc in my lumbar spine puts pressure on my nerves causing the pain to radiate down my hips and legs etc.. I've been doing therapy on and off but I've started doing core exercises cause I read that it helps alot.

Was diagnosed yesterday with this. I was told that inversion table and fish oils along with mobility excercises was my remedy. Broad based herniation with annular fissure and foraminal narrowing.
@PrecisionMovementCoach
@PrecisionMovementCoach 3 жыл бұрын
Inversion table and fish oils are nice supplements. Exercise is the key, and progressing properly through the different phases is necessary, which I outline in my Spine Control course. Warning - this course is no joke and could take you up to 10-12 months to complete, depending on your state (which is assessed at the beginning). Check out this page: www.precisionmovement.coach/spine-control - watch the video here as it outlines the phases you need to go through.

Im 19 and had a bad car accident in February of 2020 which made my lumbar hurt more than usual. I was originally told by the hospital I was just sore but my chiropractor said it’s just my lower back and hips widening because I’m a young woman. Then sprinkles the DDD diagnosis with no other info besides I couldn’t do anything about it. At this point I’m just stiff and lost so thank you for your input 🙃
