Recently Self-Hatred or Self Loathing has a been subject a lot of you have asked about. So today, we're going over ways in which we can stop hating ourselves.
We hear it all the time.. You just have to believe in yourself, or say some positive affirmations each day it will make you feel better. Or one that I mention frequently, you should talk more nicely to yourself because it can improve your mental health. While all of these things are true, and they can in fact help us feel better about ourselves, it can be hard to go from, you are so stupid and lazy! To...You are amazing and so good at everything!
Cause suddenly saying positive things just isn’t going to work. Sure we can say it, but we aren’t going to believe it, so we aren’t going to keep doing it. It can feel like a waste of time and frankly, stupid! Since we know talking more kindly to ourselves is key to fighting anxiety, stress, depression, body dysmorphia and many other mental health issues, how can we change the way we talk to ourselves without feeling like a total fraud? This is where bridge statements come in! They bridge the gap between the negative and sometimes downright nasty thoughts and the positive ones. And here is how they work....

Kayla Bear oh honey I feel the same way too. Nobody loves me and I think they have a good reason not to as i am ugly and sometimes they’d say I am stupid too. Yes I admit that I am ugly but I don’t think that I am stupid in the same amount they might think. At the end of it, I know deep within that I need to love myself even though I am ugly and stupid. Because usually even ugly things and stupid ones deserve some love out of compassion with how much they have to deal with. I will love myself and create opportunities for myself even though no one did that for me. Please, love yourself and create good things for yourself. I love you all.❤️❤️❤️

I have an issue with the "not based in research" part. When I have a negative thought like, "I'll always be a horrible procrastinator" or "I'll never be consistent with exercise and be fit" it is based on history, therefore based in research. If it's how I've always been, it's a good indicator it's how I always will be. I know that's a completely unhealthy negative mindset and I don't like that it's my response to the comment but that's the mind I'm living in unfortunately. Would love feedback.

Something I've found that helps me is when I think something bad I catch myself and add the word "sometimes" to it. For example: "Oh my god I'm so ugly... sometimes. Not all the time, but sometimes" Or "I make such stupid decisions...sometimes. Sometimes I make stupid decisions, but not all the time. Maybe this time I did, but maybe next time I wont" This may or may not work for others but it's helped me feel a lot more open to the possibility that I'm not as sucky ALL the time as I think I am.

true. As an ex-anorexic, I don't think the solution is to start loving everything about your body, but to change your system of self-evaluation. Looks aren't that important. There are more aspects to your body than looks, like health, fitness etc.

The main cause of my self hatred is my curse of sudden skill loss, my terrible genetics & terrible luck. Also it’s because everyone else is better than me when they don’t deserve to be better I’ve put in more time I literally should be everyones superior in every way at this point, no reason at all I shouldn’t be. I will not stop comparing myself until i get what i fucking want & stopping comparing myself would mean I’m settling mediocrity which is the same as giving up, why would anyone settle for mediocrity when they could be everyones superior? I sure as hell wouldn’t settle for mediocrity, i bet on that.

@jennifer7648

@@liveuser8527 Well, no matter how much I really don't want to, the things my own dad said made an enormous impact on me. He's my dad regardless of what he said or did, which means I had to endure it for a large part of my life. When it comes from a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or someone else you are in contact with every single day, it leaves a very lasting mark on you. Due to being screamed at by him about my grades, I now have anxiety about my current school work come up when I get behind, that I never expected or knew would happen. It isn't something that will go away quickly. It takes a lot of time and healing. Possibly the rest of my life. So please don't make comments like this that are very toxic and dismissive of what a person has gone through.

When it's sometimes hard for me to get up from bed and I think "I can't get up. I'm so tired and scared and paralised and I don't want to do anything" I start to think instead "You are able to move, it's possible for you to take this one leg out of bed, and then another and so on" and I focus only on this task - to get up and do anything. It's something a bit different from what you've talked about, but it's also kind of a bridge statement to the one "I want to get up and do things".

Try to exercise in the morning, as soon as you get up It will feel impossible, but its not true Compliment yourself for your self-discipline afterwards Sooner or later you will look forward to do exercises in the morning Exercise spikes your adrenalin and other good stuff in your body Evetually you will sleep easier, which will make you get up easier Setting you up in a postive spiral This technique was useful for me and has a good chance to work for you too

Maybe the goal is to get to neutral. Bridge statements are essentially the self talk equivalent, which is really neat. I'm partial to the "I'm a person" or "I'm a person who..." ones. I think they probably come after "I may not be x"--and they go kind of like: "I'm ugly"-> "I may not be as ugly as I think"-> "I'm a person, and my appearance is only one part of me." or "I'm useless"-> "Maybe I'm not useless all the time"-> "I'm the person who feeds my pets, and that has value."

Bridge statements are a very good start to begin having more compassion for yourself. The worst and hardest critic regarding your deeds and looks isn’t another person, it’s you. Remember, literally everyone has flaws and you’re not the one to expose yours. Just try to be a better version of “you” tomorrow, that’s sufficient. If you are too hard on yourself and feel unlovable you let the wrong people in your life, you’ll get exploited and abused. Good video!

This is so incredibly helpful! You absolutely nailed my self talk when it comes to just “tell yourself positive things”. Honestly, I could never get the idea out of my head that I’m just bullshitting myself and knew better. I have ADHD and depression and since my diagnosis and learning about the executive function problems ADHD causes, I’ve definitely been a lot less harsh on myself. One of the things that pissed me off the most was how easily I’d forget something I was JUST thinking about and used to call myself every name under the sun. I mean, how could I be so stupid to forget my coffee mug at work AGAIN!? Once I learned that working memory deficits were extremely common with ADHD, I’ve started to become more able to correct myself when I call myself an idiot as a knee-jerk reaction. I just remind myself that I’m not actually stupid, that I have a memory problem that’s going to cause me to forget things often. However, when it comes to parts of my depression, I have a real hard time adjusting my self talk. I’ve been working with a therapist for a bout 1.5 years now and I don’t remember him teaching me about bridge statements. Thank you so much for this!

Hi Kati I just want to say thank you. My parents are currently looking for a therapist for me, and never would never even know I need help if it weren’t for you. I had so much anxiety about opening up but I started watching you and taking your advice. So thank you so much for everything ,hope you know that you basically saved me from this dark abyss I was plummeting into. Maybe because of the way you inspired me, I might get help and stop being so anxious

@KatiMorton Kati! This clicked for me tonight! I’m in therapy for a lot and have a ton TON of negative thoughts, beliefs and narratives. What clicked is “I can say bridge statements and REALLY believe them”, which has given me a huge wave of hope. (I’ve been struggling with suicide and self harm so hope is a big deal) One of my bridge statements: I’m barely open to the possibility “I will BECOME open to the possibility ‘I will learn to handle my emotions even if the intensity does not decrease.’” I can say that and be 100% authentically believing what I’m saying and it’s not a negative thought. That for me is a HUGE breakthrough. I can’t thank you enough

I listen to your videos and you always say the words that make so much sense. I have Major Depression, GAD, PTSD from childhood trauma, and I was recently diagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder. I have been going through multiple therapists over the past couple of years because they always seem to be the wrong "fit" for me. My symptoms have gotten so bad that I actually feel afraid of people when I am in public. I used to be so strong and in control and now I feel like the entire medical community has failed to help because I keep trying to reach out and get help only to be shut down. Where do I go? I have Medicaid and I need better mental health care.

What if i hate myself to the point i feel physically sick? When i am not doing great at school, my social life is in shambles and so is my sense of worth, i feel like i’m literally going to throw up. Even when looking in the mirror i feel disgusted and nauseous. It’s very difficult for me to even step outside of my house at times. Extremely positive statements can also get you into trouble. Like "I am better than anyone else". I work as computer programmer and I used to say to myself "I am brilliant". I finally realized this caused problems, because I was always trying to impress people or setting unrealistic goals in terms of my career. I did some thought on how to replace the statement "I am brilliant" with something else. I came up with the new statement "I enjoy analyzing things and figuring things out". This was helpful because I could focus more on doing my job correctly and not trying to impress people. I found little situations where I could analyze something just for my own enjoyment or it helped me understand something that was related to my job.

A lot of this is what I tell myself every day, and I can't seem to just do the positive talk I'm expected to, mostly because my history of abuse tells me otherwise when I try. Like, how do you reverse something if so many have told you you ARE that thing you're saying? My parents always told me growing up to 'think positive thoughts and you'll be fine.' THIS, though, this video is so much more helpful. Thank you Kati.

Anyone else pushes these "bridge statements" away whenever you catch yourself thinking a bit more positive than usual? Like sometimes (rarely tho) I look in the mirror and I think that I don't look as ugly as let's say, other days, but then I tell myself that I look the same everyday, same ugly face, and no matter what I do it's not gonna change :( Basically, I dont wanna put my hopes up
