This absolutely happened to us when we moved from a house to an apartment for 6 months when we moved across the country last year. We were SO discouraged with the reactivity issues of my Aussie that was just stressed to the max suddenly being in a small apartment and surrounded by dogs. She was having me give treats when goi g crazy barking at other dogs through the dog park fence and it just made everything worse. Really nice to see balanced training with the correct use of Corrections. ITs sad in Australia where it’s almost all positive reinforcement training. I find that my methods of Instruction and Training are often being scrutinised because I still advocate the Check Chain (Choker) and or the Martin Gail. I also don’t Like to start a new handler with food until they learn the concepts. Mark and physical praise are my early go to whilst a bond/connection is being built and the new handler learns the concept of Classical Conditioning, Motivation, consistency and Timing. I'm witnessing this right now. There were 3 Dogo Argentinos pups in my neighbourhood and after taking them in it is clear to see that this pups need a very strong hand. They're stubborn beyond belief and it would be very hard for a first (or even second) time dog owner to be able to be strict enough to make them obedient.

Great topic on positive punishment. I just had a conversation with a new dog owner who is having trouble with their dog biting at their clothes while walking. It was resulting in them getting bruises from the biting and she was worried she’d have to re-home the dog. While this behaviour could be corrected to an extent with positive reinforcement, it will certainly take more time and bruises than positive punishment would. I think people associate positive punishment with heavy-handed training, which tunnels them into the positive reinforcement only mindset.

Great video brotha! I actually just had to explain to my last client how using an e-collar on an aggressive dog can cause the dog to associate the collar with the other dog they were getting aggressive with. They just put the collar on and started using it for the aggression instead of spending time with the dog alone getting them conditioned to the collar. Ive found if you make sure the dog understands it is You that is causing the discomfort in the neck as a correction it can be a great tool to correct unwanted aggression. It has to be done right tho or it will most definitely have the opposite effect! Love how you explain things keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to our session later this month and hope you have a great year!

Begging seems to be a confusing concept. Some people think the dog just being anywhere near them is considered begging. In my opinion, my dog isn't begging unless she whines or jumps up. Sitting in front of me quietly is not begging, because if I don't give her anything, she either remains there or goes off to play or whatever. She knows I'll give her something if I can; and if I don't, it's something I don't want her to have. A single whine results in getting nothing, no exceptions.

I was curious exactly what you meant when you said don’t use stimulation on a dog when they are engaged with another dog/person... I have a 7 month dog that loves to bark at people and other dogs from a distance and up close whenever she notices them. Would you consider that engaged? Thanks so much for another great video! Also what’s your thoughts on the automatic bark collars? Do they work long term?

Thanks! No, it wasn't one take. I messed up a bunch of times, but I just edit those out. :) By engaged, I mean actual physical contact with another animal or human. Bark collars work. However, with any training collar, your dog will become "collar smart" meaning he'll know when he has the bark collar on and when he does not have the bark collar on.

Great Video. I absolutely agree about the all positive approach. I have seen by far too many unruley dogs that have been brought up that way. I believe dogs need corrections and those corrections do not have to be painful. Treat withholding, firm verbal NO are just a couple ways you can correct dogs without causing pain. Luckily dogs are easily teachable. My issue is getting the owners on the same page, that is by far the hardest part of dog teaching.

this is why i watch your videos and bought your book...i don't want to rely on the wrong trainer....i'm currently working on demand biting, snapping, barking. she's 18 weeks...the pattern seems when she's tired, and hungry. this morning she redirected to a bully stick, sometimes i hav to put her in her crate for a few minutes, i'm pleasant to her, but i do say no biting allowed, i say that every time...she does settle down, but i need a real solution

Thank you for this video. BUT, firstly my dog is UK Police bred [hard as nails] reject, too small. AND I wanted to use the ecollar for when weather conditions prevented any audible command being heard. I paired her initial perception with HIGH value treat, chicken, in the kitchen. By the 3rd rep, she was coming to me as she felt it. It has become a "yes" marker. So, no aversion. At the end of your video you say NEVER give HIGH stim to a dog focused on something alive, BUT snake avoidance is just that, and you can use that [superstitious] behaviour to stop livestock chasing. I dont know if you can do BOTH [sheep AND snakes]. She dosn't chase sheep, but CANNOT resist a hare bolting from hiding 2 feet from her nose!!. Too focused for hearing, but spins round on a sixpence feeling high stim, races back to me at bullet speed, really, really happy. She WILL ignore 100% on high [etech collar] for a cat. I CANNOT hold down the button, she feels it, I see. There is nowhere on this Scottish island free of sheep.

Thanks! As long as you follow the science, you should be good. In regard to the science part, keep in mind that when you are training your dog the science is always the same; what varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc. Being able to adjust for each dog’s specific needs is considered the art of dog training. Because of this, not all techniques work on all dogs; and as a result, you have to be able to adjust accordingly. For example; a dog with a very high level of perseverance will continue to work through a difficult task to get a reward-while other dogs may give up early. Cheers!

Hey Nate, great video as always. Quick question about how you'd deal with the situation I was in this morning. Was walking my 6month old malinois when she got jumped by 3 other dogs and one actually bit her without warning at all, I rushed at the dog to push it away and also got bit on the leg. I then took my dog and played it cool as if nothing bad rly happened and tried to play with her etc. Didn't wanna caress her too much or anything. Was I wrong?

I know you asked Nate but i hope you appreciate comments from other proffesionals as well. This case is more a behaviorist case than a training case as it looks to me. . when your dog get jumped like this it can very easily get PTSD. i would get my dog a remedy to make it sleep ASAP to able to "shake" it off and not get damaged... natural remedies are superbe to use on dogs... We use something called Max relax that re made of 3 ingredients only: magnesium, vit B complex and tryptophan to make the "after shock" be as mild as possible. We give that daily for 2-3 weeks after an attack.. sometimes longer- it all depends.. But first a "sleep" remedy ASAP for the first day.. the cortisol level MUST down FAST. PTSD is not very well known in dogs and the first research was done in Sweden by Carolina Alupo and she with Anders Hallgren suggests natural remedies . Many vets that treat this it in USA giv benzodiazpin and only AFTER the problem allready has reared it's ugly head.. But in Sweden they treat it BEFORe and actually manage to stop it from becoming PTSD - and rather shows up as a few smaller problems that are easier to work with and does not affect the dog as much.. but the remedy MUST be given before 24 hours after the attack. We have started to take this very serious since it turns out a lot of dogs has it. I would DEFF caress a dog that got jumped as hard as your dog.( and she is still a Puppy. ) It is important to show support and that you are the leader that can fix things and to also show her that you will protect her.. she is only a 6 month old puppy who deff. needs a "guardian" still.. I would go to a shop and get Valerian for my dog - have it de stress, relax and do an emotioal detox by stroking long long body strokes.. and let it sleep. Deep sleep releases trauma. I would also deff. look up Michael Ellis. he is the outmost expert in mallie puppies and he has a lot to say about stuff like this. The breed is tough but are still a herding dog type and many treat them way to rough - and that is why there are shelters upon shelters with mallies and dutchies.. Hi Nate, I’m curious if you have any specific advice for my 5 year old GSD who is loud and wild in the car. For context, we’ve done basic obedience using a prong collar when he was about a year old. More recently, we’ve added in training based on your KZbin content with treats and conditioning him to “yes” and “break” as our words that predict reward. It’s been really fun for all of us! When it comes to riding in the car though, we’ve never been able to figure it out. I call it “crazy barking” and he flails all over the place, especially when we make turns (we do have him in a harness attached to the seatbelt so he can’t come up front but his paws can still reach forward). He gets so amped while we’re moving that it’s like he’s on another planet and can’t hear me. He will calm down and lay down if we get on the highway for a long stretch though. He’s always eager to get in the car, so I don’t think he’s afraid of the car itself. However, in general, he is fearful of unpredictable things moving, like a broom propped up against the wall that might fall or knocking an empty can off of the coffee table with his tail. So recently I’ve been thinking that might be the underlying reason for the behavior: fear of the unpredictable movement of the vehicle. He calms down completely when we aren’t in motion. Do you think this sounds plausible? If so, how should I go about desensitizing him to fear of being in a moving vehicle? Unfortunately, I’ve tried many things over the years (treats for when he’s quiet in the car, prong collar for correcting the barking, a can full of coins to shake, a thunder shirt, etc.) so I’m sure whatever we do finally do will take a while to make sense to him as we’ve been all over the place with training this specific scenario.

can the E-collar be a good correcting tool for a counter surfing German Wirehaired Pointer? She knows off and if I say it will get off. but then will do it again on another counter.

Yes, it works great. If I have a dog that counter surfs, I'll use a remote collar to stop it. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act. Also, this is a situation that I don't say anything when I give the dog the correction. I want the dog to think that the counter corrected him and not me. This way the dog is less likely to counter surf even when you're not there. If your dog does do it when you're not there, then set up a camera and watch him. This way you can give the correction, even if you're not in the same room. Cheers!

Hi Nate. My new 8 week old Rough Collie puppy arrived two days ago. I have been trying to guide her away from bad behaviors with leash pressure. But what she does is, she goes to sit down and refuse to move even while there is pressure on the leash. What do I do in this instance? I have picked her up when she does that, but she does seem to be a little stubborn..since I did not want to continue tugging on the leash and end up with her hating the leash. Please help!

If you only received the pup two days ago, I'm assuming the pup still needs to learn leash pressure. You have to make sure the dog fully understands leash pressure before using it for behavioral or obedience issues. If the dog does know it, then it's fair to correct. First, apply the pressure; if the dog resists, then say no and correct the dog. Immediately after the correction, apply the leash pressure again. Once the dog moves forward, release the pressure and reward.

First few days went well, but now I'm noticing when we go outside to use the bathroom, she is starting to completely ignore me and hide underneath one of our vehicles. Yes, start from the beginning with the communication channels. Yeah just got hollered at on the dog training reddit. Not a fan of prongs and stuff for my own purposes, but a leash tug is also "aversive?" Do what you can to be positive and force free, but educate yourself on all techniques.

It's heartbreaking to hear that. There are some fantastic positive only trainers out there as well as some really bad ones ... I guess the same for "balanced" trainers. The biggest issue, I believe, is the lack of accreditation and regulation in dog training. I Hope you can repair your relationship with your dog.

Yes, that can happen. This is why I say to never make corrections personal by yelling or getting mad. It's simple cause and effect. Don't worry though. Keep working and training your pup and I'm sure she'll be okay. Cheers!

I think It's really easy to damage your relationship with a bad correction. Nate's advice about 'bank accounts' aswell as rewarding after correction is important. For behaviour correction without a clear chance to reward the right behaviour I find its best to make a point of doing something fun or constructive soon after to avoid sulking.
