I went on my first outdoor skate yesterday (second time skating) with my friend who is an experienced skater. I learned pretty quickly my plow stops weren’t efficient enough to stop. We hit a small hill and as I gained momentum all I could hear her yell was “get low get low” and I’m just like “bye. Jesus take the wheel.” All went well and I managed to keep my balance until I slowed down. Thanks for taking the time to make this video! I’m going out again today to practice on level ground. Those endorphins are real! Skating is addicting!

Former figure skater here- it really helps to learn a skate by its INSIDE edge and OUTSIDE edge ( inside is between the legs, outside is out ) Getting comfy with edge control will really help with the T stop because during that stop you want to aim to use and put more pressure on your outside edge to create an angle like this " \ " when stopping not this " / " This kind of angle will help stop you from travelling on a T stop and hopefully prevent from jumping forward from it :)

Can you a toe stop video? I want to street skate. And im a beginner so lately ive just been in tennis courts or in my house cause im scared that in an emergency (like a car not paying attention making a right turn or something) i wont be able to stop fast enough cause when i use my toe stop im still moving forward for a little and the toe stop im using is kinda bouncing if that makes sense so i feel like im not doing it right
@QueerGirlStraightSkates4 жыл бұрын
Really work on the turn around toe stop! That is what I use the most when street skating- it helps me stop the fastest and is the most consistent in my opinion.

@TheSchmuck014 жыл бұрын
I've been learning mainly from artistic skaters, and they do stops a bit different, I guess because they've got more space on the floor and have more ankle support and they don't do body contact. But they're totally fine with doing a toestop drag or dragging the two inside wheels 🤷♂️ A derby skater taught me to level up my T-stops by doing a sweeping motion with my back foot, starting that foot slightly further behind my body and pulling it in as it drags. More stable, and more braking effect! All of my stops have gotten a lot more stable and reliable since I swapped to smaller harder wheels in the rink... the big wide grippy speed wheels that were stock on my skates just do not go sideways at all, they tended to bite and bounce instead of elegantly gliding to a stop, so if people are struggling with these then it might be that their wheels and the surface they're on might be making it more difficult. Maybe that could be a future video, testing a couple of different types of wheels and how they affect stops and transitions and agility and stuff?
@QueerGirlStraightSkates4 жыл бұрын
Same! Yes. Wheels definitely impact the agility of transitions and stops!
@MystiqueRisingSun4 жыл бұрын
I wear outdoor wheels at my rink. That "bounce" is actually often because - oddly enough - you're either not pressing hard enough OR because you're pressing too hard. There is a very fine line between the two when using outdoor wheels on indoor surfaces. I actually use a modified T-Stop that helps control it a little better as well. Instead of all 4 wheels, I just use my front two. Still get that bounce on occasion, but I can actually tell "why" now and know if I need to press down harder or ease up a bit.

I can transition but when I'm going a million miles an hour, I'm so scared to transition for fear of falling on my big ass before I can even use my toe stops. I can transition when I have some speed on flat ground but I do usually wait until I slow down a tad before I turn because I'm afraid the momentum will make me fall. Does this stop technique work if you've gotten yourself into a sticky situation? (For example, there's a huge hill to get into our skate park. I always end up having to dive into the grass. 🤣 ) I just started watching your videos. I'm learning how to pump a little (still a little unsteady) learning how to go up and down a few tiny ramps, I do KIND of know how to skate backwards (just watched that video of yours and it was SO helpful) wanting to learn to transition between backwards to forwards. Your videos are my favorite of all of the skating videos on KZbin! So glad you're here!

So i've been thinking about getting into roller skating but I was wondering, did you start by watching a bunch of videos or did you learn by trial and error? I've been watching videos for like 2 hours and it's making me doubt buying skates, obviously it's so so nice to have the resources of watching the basics like this but was just kinda curious on your process? I literally have skates and pads in a cart online, my brain is just trying to convince myself not to do it. I have only skated a couple of times when I was younger and at rinks. But I really do think I want to get into it, but if I buy smart with decent quality stuff it's becoming an investment you know. Any suggestions for my word vomit (ps. sorry lol)
