@Skatie Жыл бұрын
The plow stop is a pretty effective way of stopping. However if you’re going really fast it can turn into more a chop stop where you use the same technique but each foot is lifted in a forwards stepping motion. I’ve just filmed a video on emergency stops where I explain this stop it should be live in a couple of weeks.

Hi Katie, we love your videos and we would like to know how to stop when we are going fast in a crowded place where everyone is skating. Sometimes someone right In front of us falls or stops suddenly, and we don’t know how to stop at high speed….and in a range of one meter. Could you show that in a future video please? Much appreciated!
@Skatie2 жыл бұрын
Great question. These situations can be really scary and sudden. In this scenario I’d go for the emergency stop 🛑 of a 180 and both toe stops down. It does require the ability to transition / turn quickly so needs some practice but works really well. My video this Sunday covers the emergency stop. Also in this situations sometimes trying to avoid by using a sudden movement left of right can also work well. I tend to do a little side step / jump action.
@Createwithfranzsidney2 жыл бұрын
@@Skatie thank you so much! Definitely something we need to practice those toe stops! Sometimes there is no space for swerving aside (or so thinks my 14 y.o. daughter, ha ha! Is balancing required in doing T stop or toe stop ? The friction from it makes me trip and fall.. wat could be the issue?
@Skatie3 жыл бұрын
The T-stop is a more advanced stop than the plough as you need to be able to balance on one leg while the other drags behind. Applying gentle pressure with the braking foot initially should help with controlling the friction. After a bit of practice you’ll feel the right amount of pressure to apply. Make sure you’ve got your safety gear on if you’re falling. Stay safe and happy rolling x

They are best used outside when skating on trails forwards etc to control speed. They often invoke heated debate as some consider them trip hazards but they do have their uses too when used safety.

When I was in high school, there was this thing we had to do in gym class at the end of the year where we had to go and skate around the neighborhood and park. I hated how the teachers just ASSUMED we were all experts, and did this in our spare time or something. I was the kid that was lagging behind, because I didn't want to do this, not knowing how to stop, and generally just not having fun. I nearly lost my life that day, or got my leg run over, and couldn't stop myself and nearly went out to a busy road. I had to deliberately make myself fall backwards on my bum in order to stop. The gym teacher finally caught wind of this, grabbed my arm, and pulled me back to the sidewalk. I was fuming that I was even here. To diffuse the tension, the gym teacher smiled and went, "I just saved your life!" Yeah. Great. Thanks for that. But you wouldn't have to do that, if people didn't assume all of us know how to skate/stop. If only I knew your advice sooner.

This sounds horrific. I’m so sorry your introduction to skating was so terrible. Learning any new skills requires a safe space to learn. Which is not the side of a busy road! Wow. Glad you were ok. 💕💕💕

What are your thoughts of using your toe stop to slow down? I do it primarily on trail skates to control speed, or to gradually slow down to transition because it’s comfortable for me but I’ve been really really harshly fingers wagged at for doing it. Bad enough that it makes me feel bad
@Skatie3 жыл бұрын
Stopping using a toe stop is fine. As long as your toe is turned out and not dragged behind with your knee pointing down. It will wear your toe stop down quite quickly outside.
