I struggle with this greatly. For example,I can't answer basic questions about my family background or childhood without oversharing. I grew up very poor but am currently in the Middle Class and it's tricky to navigate these conversations truthfully without making others uncomfortable. On one hand I don't want to be off-putting but on the other hand I feel that people who come from fucked up family situations have as much right to be in polite company as anyone else. I feel that it's best to make this call on a case-by-case basis.

I so needed this. My fuel is raw authenticity, and I love deep conversations. Surface conversations are so inane to me, fortunately my role as a chaplain means I get to have these deep convos on a daily basis. Some people love jumping in deep and thank me for it, but these tips are so good because it’s not always appropriate. Thanks.

I never realized that oversharing could actually push people away. No wonder I’ve often felt disappointed when opening up to someone new. I didn’t understand that I might have overwhelmed them and put them in an awkward position. Thank you for shedding light on this, Alex!

❤️ those of us who had the habit of over sharing always thought we were being good communicators until we had a reason to learn why that was not good. Hard but fortunate. Thank you for sharing this short to the point excellent video. I hope that my grandkids learned this skill much earlier than I ever did.

Excellent topic, clues and examples, and way better outfit you're wearing - grey instead of brown.

Thanks. But no outfit I wear escapes criticism. For every outfit, there are people who have negative comments on it. 😂

Your wife’s story was so funny! And endearing, actually. 😂 Interesting thing is that the ad that played after this video started off something like this, “I’m ___. I’m an actor with my own tv show. I like ____. And I have ulcerative colitis” The third share made me verbally say, “ooh.”😮 with a visceral reaction, lol. Great video

I think the level of the other person's curiosity can be read both ways. I've often seen people overshare, and the other people in the conversation suddenly perk up and start asking a bunch of questions because they feel like they're getting something salacious. If people seem to get TOO excited/interested, that can also be a sign that you're oversharing.

Could be, yes. Always use your best judgement when reading the situation.

Question that I've struggled with for years: I have an semi-abnormal, life-threatening allergy that affects the people around me because I can't be around certain common things. It has to be in my first conversation with new people. It automatically brings me into oversharing and into my health issues. How do I address this without it feeling like oversharing about my health?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 15 күн бұрын
I don't have any precise advice because I don't know what type of details that conversation would normally involve. But you could start with the end in mind. Is there anything you're asking of them that is connected to your allergies? Are you asking them to change their behavior, in other words? You can focus on the outcome you want without sharing all of the details. In other words, they don't need your medical history or the details of your diagnosis. They just need to avoid doing any life-threatening behaviors, right? Like I said, I can't really give any good advice on this without knowing more, but if it were me, I'd just focus on the very basic information they need to know. They don't need the whole backstory to take appropriate action.

Im sorry but I do not have conversations about sports or other "topicality"..primarily cause I do not waste my time or brain power on useless malarkey. This is why people rarely talk too me and I an more than ok with that. I never talk about myself or others!!
