LOL, let's just hope he bites the right person. If he gets carried away and bites the owner when he reaches 120 Lbs. that will mean a trip to the ER. Mine is already able to do some damage at 3 months so I'm working hard to get him not to direct it at me. If I ever decide to train him for bitework it will be after he has mastered self-control and learned all his other obedience and I'd use someone else as a decoy; never myself.

Put your thumb in their mouth in under the tongue and press. Not too hard, just enough to have control. It doesnt hurt them. Its just uncomfortable. They dont like it. They stop instantly. Then redirect them by giving them something they can bite. Just be consistent and he will eventually get it. It worked for me. I have an Alapaha.

It never comes after first correction. You will have to repeat many times before it clicks. Puppies have the attention span of a gnat. They will only remember what makes the most startling impression on their developing brains, namely stern correction. This guy did great.

I like your comment about playing on the ground. I have done that with my Rotties. They do learn very young to not bite, but when we are down on the floor most of the rules kind of go out the window😉. They can jump and “nicely” nip and growl and tug and bowl me over all they want. When I stand up and say “all done guys” the “rules” come back in place.

I think people forget that small, fun-to-chase critters like rodents, rabbits, and other animals scream/squeal when they’re being killed. That’s why dog toys squeak! Saying "owh!!" only encourages a dog by imitating prey.

I like what you said about letting the puppies be puppies .. I am new to being a Mom of my guy, Jocq. He is 11.5 wks old. Got him when he was 7 wks. old. Because I have not detoured playful puppy biting I am comfortable in letting Jocq mouth me however he does know when he has gone over the line. I like that you showed us how to correct a behavior by getting ahold of the scruff or ear. Will start to implement that into my corrections instead of what I have been doing. Thanks!!!

Good video, very well explained. I try to do both, bite inhibition (stopping the bite) as well as bite force control ( how much pressure they bite with). While it bites on me during play I pet his head by the ear and when they bite hard I pinch the ear applying equal pressure as their bite. Basically showing them when I feel pain. (That doesn't hinder bite work but it does save my ass when the dog bites me by accident.)

It’s like training a box cutter. And we are doing great, 16 week old malinois who is typically clumsy (like all puppies) with his mouth BC he is so young, not fully coordinated and immature. My husband wants GSD as our next family dog. No children at home (only Uni student). Our 16y.o. standard schnauzer left us in January. We still have a 10y.o. papillon. I know it will be me, who will feed, train, walk, brush etc the GSD - my husband will just play and occasionally join me on walks. He is just too busy at work. My brain tells me that GSD is a good choice as I will feel more secure while being alone at home, but GSD is a different "level". Will I manage? What if I have a reactive dog? I really need a companion dog, confident but not overly protective etc. That's why I read and watch as much as I can about GSD, their training etc and maybe one day I decide I'm ready 😊

You have to be tough with them. Thank you for not falling into the pansy beta type training. Dogs do NOT think that way. Watch any mother dog discipline her puppies. She doesn't "redirect" shit. She sharply corrects them and they fall in line. She does NOT hurt them, she corrects them. There is a HUGE difference.

The end was right on the money, no Alfa rolling, ear biting bullsh!t! It similar to jumping, it’s a behavior that can be corrected easily, but can then be trained back in for those times your dog has your permission to jump on you, every dog I work with learns “lap”, and they love it.

I use the scruff technique to. However the vet told me off, they said its where they inject and do stuff, and the dog will associate the scruff grabbing when they try to do something. However a rottweiler even at 4 months old has a real hard bite. So little choice. I agree it's really the only way. Pack leader

Been hoping for this video! My brother has raised two GSDs, said my half-Doberman pup is the most aggressive puppy he's ever met. 13 weeks and too big to "scruff" now I think, she bites HARD to try and goad people into rough play and reaching towards her just results in getting a hand bitten. She will also death roll to prevent being handled. Probably a really great candidate for wearing a house line all the time, but that would get chewed to pieces and I really don't want her to realize the mortality of leashes. 90% of the time a really sweet-natured, friendly puppy, just gets it in her head that she wants to play fight sometimes, and I end up reinforcing it in the process of trying not to get bit.

We all know those dog expert owners who freak out at your discipline and training methods. They're the ones who are in obedience schools forever, because Fido and Fluffy are the worst undisciplined dogs on the block. They return the most dogs to shelters and rescues. They're the no boundary, no limit fur-baby parents. You know the ones that have the chewed up walls, furniture and shoes, resource-guarding, food fixated, typically under-exercised/ obese, neurotic mess that is the thug of the dog park.

My Malinois is almost 3 months old now and his puppy biting hurts and can leave bruises and draw blood. His father was really large and I think he will be too and doesn't know his own strength. I have tried almost all these methods. First I ignored it and didn't move the body part he was biting but that didn't work as he got more intense to get a reaction out of me. You're right that saying "ouch" doesn't work either. I tried that too, and he bit harder. I have tried scruffing him and all he does is try then to bite the hand that's scruffing him and sometimes with a little growl. So far I have found that picking him up off the ground sometimes works, or leaving the leash on him, putting him in a sit after giving a tight upward correction away from me where he can't reach me (which probably simulates scruffing him but not with my hand) sometimes works. I have tried rewarding him for when he DOESN'T bite and lies down or sits nicely, but that only works temporarily. I have said "no" or "stop" so many times I'm sure he understands what it means but his impulse control is just not there yet. Is it just a matter of time and repetition before it sticks, or do I need to try something else? I don't plan to do bitework with him unless it's for personal protection (much later) and if I decide to train him for that I do not want to ever be the decoy because I don't want him to think it's ever OK to attack me; only protect me. When he is full grown he could really hurt somebody so I want to make sure that he learns early on that the commands come from me and that it's clear to him that I never be the target.

There are definitely different types of puppy biting. I do not allow any puppies to bite or tug on clothing or blankets. That is a definite no no with me. They have their toys to bite. I allow chewing on my hand to a point because that's how puppies play and bond. They get your taste. As long as they realize that too hard is too hard, it is a bond builder.

Very useful information..thank you... Those pups are so so cute... 100% agree with your advice.. ( with my doggies they listen to my husband, but not me and they think I’m a clown 🤡.. and always play silly with me and don’t listen to me and even though I like the pattern we have with our doggies, sometimes it is difficult for me to handle them when my husband goes out of town.. BUT.... they are our babies..❤️❤️❤️)

You can be in charge and still have fun with your dogs. It will take a little work but you can do it!!!!!

The amount of times the positive only types told me to say ouch and yell no(dogs don’t understand no) only for my dog to attack harder lol. They told me to turn around.. only for the dog to jump on my back and tug and rip my hood. The morale of the story is.. ignoring biting just makes the dog bite more. Thanks Haz.

Positive punishment is not the most effective technique, right? Try negative reinforcement, removing attn when he bites. Then return to positive reinforcement later when he’s not biting. Right? But as you say, if it’s a puppy maybe he’s not at a developmental stage to refrain very easily yet. It would take a lot of repetitions and consistent. It’s not something to worry about necessarily. Just dont encourage him biting you. He can tug on tug toy tho, right? Stand in the way if puppy is too rough with other puppy, no? If he is biting you, advance into his space and stand your ground. Dogs dont know from “no.” Instead of saying “no” give him a command he knows and reward him if he complies. Give the command when they begin the chewing on you. If youve done your job motivating and solidifying obedience then you can reward the good behavior instead of inflicting pain. But youre going to have a hard time teaching a dog anything if he’s pent up, traumatized, frustrated - or defensive.

That's why I swear by Sheild K9, logical & realistic dog training. A good suggestion lead from Animal Watch episode on #FinnsLaw & Police Working Dogs... KZbin algorithm worked well this time around, glad I found the channel.

❤❤❤ I'm really enjoying your training steps my puppy love chewing on my arms but now she can be anywhere in the house or yard but if the kids shout attack she run straight for their arms. Quick question can I undo that command. She is 12 weeks now

Love your videos! Would you consider doing one on doing this type of training for a career? I have always kept shepherds and worked with animals, and Im looking into going to school for training police k9s, protection dogs and service dogs. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
