@@AmericanStandardK9 I have a question am I in the wrong for not wanting my two dogs to be put down I'm 16 and have a German shepherd and a belgian malinois I trained them and they are super friendly love people and don't bark, don't jump or anything I was at a gas station and had them in the bed of my truck when some kids from my school who I have had beef with for years tried to steal my truck and tried to steal my keys from me pushed me to the ground after I punched on of them and they tackled me to the ground My dog saw them kicking me while I was on the ground and decided to jump out of the bed of the truck and drag them off me But now the kids parents want me to put down my two dogs or take me to court I'm I in the wrong for not wanting them to be put down

Not mentioned, but also effective with many dogs is to gasp and/or shriek at the bite, as if in pain. Puppies do this with one another when the other bites too hard, and momma swoops in for a correction if the sibling keeps screaming. It's important to remember, though, that this may encourage certain stubborn or adventurous puppies, so it's always important to tailor the method you use to the personality of the pup (I always at least *try* the gasping and such first though, before moving to corrections).

The way we got our heeler not to bite us was every time she’d nip our calves, we’d immediately turn around & grab her muzzle & hold it gently but firmly & say “NO. NO BITE” took maybe 4-5 times & she understood not to bite anyone, never had an issue since. She’s 11 now

had a lot of success personally with helping my dogs *understand* that what they're doing is hurting me. pulling my hand back, yelling or whimpering, and then withdrawing for a minute or two. i think they don't inherently understand why it would hurt us since their skin is much thicker and tougher than ours, but once they understand they don't want to be hurting you

Not necessarily true. Some puppies don't care. Having fostered multiple pairs of puppies i have seen that whenever one puppy gets too rough with the other one, the other one will literally snap at the aggressive puppy till he stops. You need to correct for bad behavior, this is what they know.

I trained my heeler not to bite by yelping like it really hurt anytime her teeth touched. Worked great, she doesn’t nip at anything except the occasional frisbee if she’s riled up. And that’s game over… Along with the toy redirect to prevent chewing on things she wasn’t allowed that aren’t human.

I know flank method is instead of scruffing the neck you scruff the flank which is the area near their hip, and leg. Kinda like pinching your own love handle. Drowning the bite is just you push forward and actually pull the dog into the bite. So if puppy bites your hand, instead of pulling back, you push your hand into their mouth with your entire hand and the puppy will back off. I've tried that one of my adult GSD and I shoved my entire fist in it's mouth, and it definitely work. Personally the best method I found was to fold their lip under their tooth, and actually push down their teeth into their lip. That one worked really well. You know when you are chewing and you accidentally bite the inside of your cheek? Same thing here.

I have a very simple and easy method. When the dog puts teeth on you. you make a high pitched ow sound, similar to what another dog would do if they get hurt. The puppy instantly stops and then you don't touch or play with them for a bit until they calm down. It only takes a few times doing this before puppies learn not to bite because bitting means you are hurt and stop playing. You should do this anytime teeth touches your skin, even when it doesn't actually hurt.

Had this the first 1-2 weeks with my Malinois 2 years back. Very bity little lady😂 The first days, she was too fast, I was too shocked and reacting too slow. From there on, I provoked the Szenarios in which I was bitten before and because I was prepared my reaction was in time. I took her on the neck and with very little pressure hold her down on the neck until she really really wanted to get away, then released her and always offered a peace gift, so she would come back every time. Didn’t last for another week and to this day never had issues again. Just days after, I started mouth feeding and with that all harsh behavior was gone for good. She even plays with strange kids and is super gentle and obedient :) I kept her away from kids until she was about 18 months old, since then very sensible with kids. Doesn’t matter if she knows them or not. She kinda sees them as MY puppies, it seems. 😂 always checking back on me, whether she does good or not :)

Another thing to realize is that puppies bite A LOT. And they can’t help it. It’s a natural process of losing their baby teeth and growing new teeth called teething. During this process, they chew and bite whatever they can to relieve pain and reduce discomfort. Human babies go through the same process when their first set of teeth are coming in when they are born, which is part of the reason we made pacifiers for them. Once a dog grows out of its infancy years, it’s less likely to bite you. However, it is still good to teach them at early ages what is and isn’t okay to bite.

I have no idea what any of those meant 😅. But my uncle who is a hunter and has always bread dogs here in the uk, always stopped dogs but shoving his fist in their mouth if they tried to bite, they never did it again. We’ve done that with every puppy we’ve had and not one of them has bitten anyone and are extremely safe to leave with babies to children. In fact they always play nicely with the kids and always hang out with them like they are one of them. I did it with my Labrador when he was a puppy and he’s now 2 and the most friendly human like dog that just wants to lick you and love you.

If I say ow, they immediately stop whatever they are doing to me and check on me.😂 I love my dog.

biting is essential for puppies to learn their bite strength. with my rhodesian we simply stopped playing after yelling "ow!" this is a similar response in puppy world. nobody wants the playing to stop so the puppies learn that biting stops fun. with humans they will learn their proper bite pressure when interacting with humans as an adult. She has the gentlest touch when she mouths us as an adult for play etc..

I breed dogs and the scruffing method is what I, and what every breeder I know, does. It’s not an aversive method, but a denial method. Basically you are denying the puppy the attention from you that it wants. It learns pretty quickly that if it nips it won’t get attention and if doesn’t it will get attention. It’s called negative punishment, whereas aversive methods would be positive punishment.

My mother in law would train by playing with the puppy and shout "ow" whenever the puppy would bite, even if it wasnt hard or if they didnt get their teeth yet. I tried that and it partially worked but then they would think it was a game. With certain dogs ive tried your methods and it works a bit more. But when it seems like they dont understand the word ow i might give them a pinch that hurts just enough to get them to yelp and i tell them ow and comfort them and i never do it again and then on if i say ow or do the other methods it works instantly and they're typically better around kids and other animals because then they become better listeners for the most part. I love my kids and i know when they're needing some correction, but for the most part i have two dogs that are happy, goofy, they like to get into easy mischief and know they are loved and wanted. The other thing is kennel time. We use kennel time when they are young and even when they get a bit older, just as a way to get them to be calm through the day. Sort of like nap time.

I let my pup bite (nibble) on me when he was growing up and I was told not to or else he'll continue. When we play he does nip but he also knows not to bite hard. It's like rough housing for us boys. He also doesn't clench. So I can play tug of war without a toy, just my fingers hooked. I spend a lot of time with him and I wouldn't advise it for anyone that isn't going to take the time to form the bond. Other than that since he's a single pup, we play puppy mode so he can get some energy out. Love that pup. Hugs and hops every time I get home 😁

People don’t like this method because puppy cute equals baby it but kind of smacking it works too. Soft people will say it’s abuse but it’s a correction

Time out worked great for ours. She still nips on occasion when she's really hyper. Aside from that - timeout corrected the nipping after like 3 days of consistent use. And day one the biting reduced by maybe 80% after 3 time outs. Not in her crate though. Put her in the bathroom away from everyone and everything.

When my basenji puppy kept biting my hand during play, i started gently grabbing her lower jaw while she was biting my hand. It was super uncomfortable, so she learned quickly not to bite.

I don't know if this advisable to tru on puppies. But with kitten bitting, what I was taught when they'd bite on your fingers is to jam your finger slightly into the kittens mouth til they gag. It stops the biting and do it enough times they get that biting fingers is unpleasant.

I've always held their cheeks into their teeth while they were biting and said "OW!" in a high-pitched voice. You're forcing them to understand what you feel when they bite you by making them bite themselves on a sensitive spot. After that, most of them seem to understand that biting hurts, and associate whatever your "OW!" noise is with distress. Worked great with all the mongrels I've owned, especially considering everyone already knew how to tell my dogs, "You're being too rough, stop it." I wouldn't recommend this with an adult rescue, that seems like a way to lose fingers.

Ok hear me out. You know how some people say to train a dog to stop barking on command, you start by teaching them to bark on command? Teach the puppy to bite your baby on command. Reward it. Then command it to stop. Reward it again! 😅😅

number one tip is STOP TAKING PUPPIES FROM THEIR MOTHERS BEFORE THE TIME IS RIGHT their mother and their brothers/sisters are essential to develop their social behaviour puppies explore the world by biting we human do the same thing by grabbing thing and putting it in our mouth when we are toddlers a puppy will bite everything his mother will teach him that there are things that he should not bite and teach him how much force to put in playful bites
