Are you finding that your PC or laptop is sat doing nothing and suddenly there is a disturbance in the force! The fans all ramp up and the temps start going through the roof?
Well it is weirdly by design (thanks Microsoft)
Windows seems to want to run a sort of diagnostic benchmark when the PC is idle.
This used to be something we would run on Windows 7 PC's to see what the PC performance rating was. This was known as the Windows Assessment Tool.
With modern Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems this task is scheduled to run randomly for some bizarre reason? But it is pretty easy to stop it running at random times by removing the scheduled task in Windows Task Scheduler.
In Windows task scheduler in the top left click on Microsoft, then Windows, then maintainence and then you should find the WinSAT task, you can disable it or remove it. I choose to remove it, and since then, no more random CPU temp spikes and no more fans ramping up to compensate for the generated heat!

Mike, this is one of your best KZbin videos I'll never forget. It's friday, August 2, 2024 after wasting the better part of today trying to figure this out I searched KZbin for this exact problem. getting nowhere I finally typed, PC transient power spikes. Mikesunboxing popped up with, How To Stop Random 100% CPU Usage Spikes When PC Is Idle WinSAT Task. I had already ran a RAM test and pulled my GPU, updating Windows but stopped when I noticed updating the BIOS might not work since the BIOS update were for AMD 9000 CPU's. I'll reinstall GPU soon. Thumbs UP, Subscribed and Loved this needed video. I storred this Mikes Unboxing Video to my desktop.

i think unless you have a fan profile that is making it noticeable you might not see it happening, or if the system has tasks running so it is never idle that might prevent it running as well

Nice, thanks ! Do you have a tip for high bursts in latency ? I use latencymon to monitor latency and even at idle I get a lot of high bursts... I searched the internet for fixes but none worked for me Edit : I think you addressed that issue in another video, I'll go and watch it

Thank you for the video my hp laptop was almost always pegged at 100% cpu usage at idle and in use with fan pretty much always running. Fixed instantly after i hit delete and battery life has been dramatically increased

could be, and also on a laptop the CPU load would likely trigger CPU throttling

Hi Mike. When I have trouble understanding what is being said, I click "more..." and scroll down to Transcript. Many KZbinrs need to learn about that feature. This is one step higher than using the "CC" function.

@@mikesunboxing I will chat with you on discord The only way that the board would not work if he tried to update the bios and bricked it. Do you know if he updated the bios to 5000 series and bricked it . I do believe he said to you he did not update bios is that correct. mike.

@@mikesunboxing have you tried a bios update by any chance , mike if you do that and put a cpu and gpu on the board then it should power up . The board i have was brand new last year when i got it and it was updated by the shop seller as the board would not power up otherwise . It works perfectly. now if that board has not had a bios update although the 5 volt will work in the bios it will cancel to work although you had a 3000 series it may need a older cpu . So check that first as you know how to do bios update mike i seen you do it on that type of board i believe some years back . so update and if it still does not work it means the guy who sold it to you bricked it . he would also should have told you but wanted to sell it to get some money back and do it quickly as you have 30 days before you get money back.
