I like this. I've found in the past year, it's not the doing of the hard thing that is a problem or struggle per se, such as leg day, it's the thinking about doing it.

@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 5 жыл бұрын
It's actually not... Like anything else you're going to learn, it only takes time and practice... repetition. SO... when you catch yourself breaking back into "bad old habits" just STOP... lower your head... admit it. It's okay to be human. FORGIVE YOURSELF... Show that little modicum of patience our teachers showed when we "goofed" in class. Learning the new habit isn't any different from learning math or history in class. You goof up. It happens... We're ALL guilty of it. I've f***ed up royal. Jocko's f***ed up royal. Every single person who posted to this thread has f***ed up royal!!! SO hang your head a moment. Admit it. You've f***ed up royal, too. SO what??? Own it... and move on. Stop doing that, and do the new thing... that "hard" thing. (for sake of example)... Put the damn donuts down, and grab the kettle bell. Close out FB, Insta, YT, Tumblr, (or whatever) and put the phone away... DO YOUR CHORES FIRST. Turn off the damn game-station, and get your homework done... PROPER DONE. Look, we all have "bad habits" that we know are self destructive. Face them in their turns. We ALL backslide a little bit. It seems hopeless after catching ourselves that "ump-teenth" friggin' time, doing the "same dumb sh*t"... BUT STOP... Breathe... Forgive yourself being human and fallible. Remind yourself, "Anything worth doing is going to be difficult, dirty, and probably dangerous."... THEN rectify the problem this time, too. The only thing you shouldn't do is give up. Success is ONLY a matter of NOT QUITTING... nothing more and nothing less. You make good progress one day... and fall flat on your ass the next... but you don't quit. You just get up, dust off, and soldier on... keep on doing. You really can get "there" from here. I believe in you. ;o)

Dichotomy of Jocko: Natural born leader, kind and thoughtful human being, a father, a husband, a son, a friend, a man who is a patriot and a giver of some of the wisest advice ever thought of and spoken... And someone who could kill you in probably 10,000 ways you never heard of and faster than you can even imagine. It's really weird. He's fucking terrifying and yet someone who you can trust with ANYTHING and he will always do what is honorable.

I love Jocko, he motivated me to start getting up at 3am. But over the years I have realized he is such a machine of discipline that he has never had to contemplate strategies that get you to be disciplined, to change your habits you've had your whole life. And I feel this guy's question, he was asking for strategies but Jocko just did a motivational speech, which is great but not what people like me need. So I come to Jocko for motivation and inspiration, but I go to Tim Ferriss for strategies that help a lesser mortal like myself who is not a tank of discipline.

strategies are useless without the right mindset, it might work for a while, but as the guy who has asked him this question said - start strong and fade fast - using a strategy to start and then it all fades because you don't have the MINDSET, THAT'S why he doesn't talk about strategies, because it is fluff

I think what makes it so hard is that once you replace a bad habit, if you dont take immediate action to replace it with something else, say a good habit, then you fill the void with whats known. And just because you broke the bad habit doesnt mean you forgot it. Thanks for the upload Jocko!

well, doing whats dreadful in the case of the asker would be to not do the old habit. So the action to take is to stop taking the easy action. While it might not be the most fitting answer here, it can still apply here too.

Different reading than I expected. Upon first reading, I expected Jocko to tell us the fight is in the nightmare-to suppress the nightmare. Instead, he tells us to act. The nightmare isn’t the inner struggle to avoid doing the wrong thing, like kill Caesar. The nightmare is what keeps us from doing the right thing. Dispense with the nightmare and do what’s right. The nightmare is a battle that doesn’t need to be fought. Circumvent it entirely and move onward to victory. Brilliant inversion of the text, Jocko.

Thanks, Jocko! Short, concise - and using 'ole Will in a way he would be proud of! Instead of contemplating, savoring and connecting with your weakness, the evil that is holding you back, a second longer - Take ACTION and MOVE "off the X" and into a better alternative, positive action - INSTEAD of allowing your weakness to win! Make the negatives in your life an increasingly distant memory by positive action, every time. Hope I got that right..... Thanks for being there for us guys!

The whole excerpt from where the quote is taken is equally applicable to the question, I think. Between the acting of a dreadful thing And the first motion, all the interim is Like a phantasma or a hideous dream. The genius and the mortal instruments Are then in council, and the state of man, Like to a little kingdom, suffers then The nature of an insurrection. To which the sparknotes translation reads From the time when you decide to do something terrible to the moment you do it, everything feels unreal, like a horrible dream. The unconscious and the body work together and rebel against the conscious mind. I think this is were the discipline comes in, like a general training troops so that the whole unit is working toward the same goal. As long as insubordination is allowed to breed inside myself I will slide back. Failure can happen, but outright sabotage of the team's mission cannot be allowed. So I act to train myself, fail less and less, and achieve my goal. Now I'll stop procrastinating on KZbin.
