For anyone thinking about switching careers after 30... Do not worry, is doable, you can do it! It took me 5 years of University and 10 years as a Civil Engineer to figure out I needed a change and went full throttle on Networking, landing a job, and now trying to open my way in Cybersec

I hope to find work ...despite my age 35 years in this field which I have always liked .....i want to do pentesting but my goal is to become an etichal hacker

One of my biggest regrets was being talked out of and just not getting the CompTIA A+ and W3Schools certificates while I was working my first job after ITT. If I had, it would have boosted my confidence on finding a job and just would have shortened the time it took to find another IT job. When I was in my 6 of 8 semester of ITT I got a job as a junior developer at an IT company in Valley Forge, Pa...after 3 years working there, I left due to overwork and verbal abuse. Having a few of those certifications would have made it easier to find a decent job...it took me a little over 3 years to get a new full time job in IT

The key is to be early in a new area. New in Cyber whatever is better than certs. After something goes mainstream, the floodgates open and certs don't equate to talent. Trying to stand out in a bloated field like "cybersecurity" is hard unless you have real experience.

The job market is such a mix of stories. "I got an analyst job with just my security+" all the way to "I have 10 years IT experience, my CISSP, OSCP, PPTP, and I still can't find a job after 6 months"...Hard to read what's going on with all those stories though since there's a lot of factors 😅

To be fair, college’s often say with their degrees you can land the following careers: Administrator Engineer Manager Etc, I fell for that trash hook line and sinker! Told my wife well with this degree I should be able to land one of these careers and according to glass door, in our area should be making these wages. After the degree and applying to help desk position to take a pay cut so I could work my way up through the trenches once again(fun conversation to have with the wife with 2 kids and another one on the way; just incase you were wondering.) now have a pretty good security gig after working in the IT field in various roles after a few years.

Hey thanks for your videos, you where the hat drop that made me get my cyber security cert idea from a could to would. now i'm certified, and its my only certification with 12+ years of IT experience. my regret is not getting into a better tech school. although i met my now wife, and managed to get enough grants to graduate debt free in that school. so pros and cons, i just wish i had exposure to cyber security earlier. it would have changed my course in life greatly.

I think there's a lot of demand still, probably less these past few years. But, the people applying to the lower "entry" level positions has grown and thus raised the bar to entry because you're competing with more people who could have that 1 or 2 certs you don't have or years of experience.

No one hasn’t really figured out after they graduate high school. Those kids who go straight to college and become doctors and lawyers are pretty miserable once they reach their mid-30s or early 40s because they never really got to live life. The important thing is that you get it figured out, and you live your best life. Just because you didn’t do it in your early 20s, doesn’t mean you can’t be happy at this point in your life whatever that appointment be.

All great points however I think it's a little unrealistic for most people. I have a young kid with special needs and have switched careers to IT from a Paramilitary background. I have had to self teach and scrap but I made it from a T1 to a cybersecurity analyst in 3 years. I still play WOW, have time with my family, pay my bills, and overall have a good life. There is no one way to do this career and I think it's more import you check off the main boxes like setting realistic and dynamic goals, create a work life balance to avoid burnout, and just keep learning and applying practical knowledge.
@Relinquolamia
@Relinquolamia Ай бұрын
Regret not trying to get into IT sooner - I'm rather established in my current role and trying to switch careers and be on a similar wage for my first IT role is difficult. Being a new parent and working full time makes having time for certs or projects difficult - *screams into void*

Video games definitely need to be limited. I think a set time limit works best, so forcing yourself to quit if you know you've play X amount of minutes that day. Also, only playing after putting in study time first in the day so the gaming time is at the end of your day.

both these certs are good since the google cybersecurity course builds foundation for comptia securtiy+. but the current state of cybersecurity job is ' to get a job, you need relevant experience, but to get relevant experience, you need the relevant job'. personally i would say internships are the next step (which you could probably skip and go straight into IT jobs if you already know the people who would give you a chance). since most internships are for uni students, i would recommend the one from Josh Madakor (checkout his cyber course, which requires you to pass his exam to continue on with his internship) or Mosse cybersecurity institute (MCSI) remote internship. I already have my google cybersec cert, am currently in MCSI internship, and am planning to enroll in Josh's cyber course to accelerate my prep for Security+ exam. Then once im done with the exam, I would continue with his internship
