I have 2 seven month old basset hounds from the same litter. They are strangely silent. Until yesterday, I have never heard Juniper bark and only let out one howl in the 5 months I have had them. My Raven only barks rarely and it is only because Juniper has something she wants. My last two, Peanut and Oreo had really big mouths, especially Oreo and would be quite vocal when they wanted something. My Petunia would howl when she wanted me to play with her and my Rappunzel barked, not howled, but she wasn’t very vocal and if she barked, somebody was up to no good. She took care of a guy who tried to break into our car one night quite well. He didn’t get into the car and he left skin and blood in our back yard. We just laughed at him as she was taking care of the situation. Rappunzel was the only one of my six bassets that was a watchdog. She was a good girl. They were all good girls.

I had a Basset who didn’t bark much until we moved. She was 4 and there were no kids in the old neighborhood, and now there were children playing, making noise, and the dog started barking then.

You love that dog. My first one was actually named Rappunzel, but we called her Bonehead, because she had such a pointy head. We said her breed was actually called a Bonehead hound. She was absolutely beautiful and was basset hound perfection. Even some of my neighbors cried when she died, especially our pool man.

@@xxxHAPPYCHAPPYxxx Thank you for that. I now have 2 seven month old basset puppies. They are a handful, but I love them. Juniper was given to me by a kind person (my CPA and friend) that thought I should not be alone after my husband died 16 months ago. She knew I loved bassets. She called me when the mother dog was pregnant and told me she bought Junie (Juniper) for me. I bought another one, Raven, out of the same litter. I have had 6 basset hounds. They are stubborn (another reason they are boneheaded), but the sweetest things God ever created. A kid down the street from me put a video of my little girls here on KZbin. If you type in “Juniper and Raven”, you will see them. They look very much alike. My last 2, Peanut and Oreo, were from the same litter, but they didn’t look alike at all.

I've got a beagle/basset hound mix that doesn't make a sound in the house. But take him on a walk, he sounds off as soon as he gets a rabbit scent. And there are rabbits all over the neighborhood.

Can people other than the owner correct barking. The dog obeys the òwner but no one else

I only bark at those pesky cats! Get out of my yard you pesky cats!
