Slip lead, tree method. Throw a ball once to a park or in the backyard for a few before leaving, a firm still knee helps let them jump into hard things if they jump at you. My dog only sits through physical touch or a very firm commands. No freaking out when he be jumps. You must train you family and friends to be calm and talk gestures. If they can’t do that get new friends, real friends listen to you when you are training your dog. Let them wear themselves out. I don’t care what some people say, some dogs only respect authority or a physical activity prevents them from doing a behavior, not all but some dogs.

Just stay in one spot until he calms down and he will eventually sit. You have to be extremely patient with dogs. I love it when you see a dog learning something in just a few minutes and keeping up the routine makes life so much easier. Yet some of us took on a rescue dog. We get frustrated and upset with the dog and start looking through training videos trying to find the one that works. Then you realise what you really took on with the rescue dog. For example, I have two rescue dogs, and walks on leash are painful. One dog walks incredibly slow and the other believes he's in a sled dog race. I say heel and the slower dog goes even slower. How slow, I'll explain. We get in the gate of the dog park, do two laps and the slow dog is only just ready to stop sniffing, pissing, eating grass and ready to head off. It's mortally painful. Both dogs won't change, they modify but stay the same. Corrections sometimes make the dogs worse, especially if they are new and have been bullied by humans.

@@Nerdperior It takes longer, but every time they pull, stop dead and hold it. Do a little tug and try to get their attention and/or get them to come back to stand near you and wonder wtf you're doing. The key is then when you start walking again, do so with BIG praise and even a treat. Or do the back and forth trick where you walk one way and the second they pull you stop, turn and walk the other way. Do this back and forth for twenty minutes if you have to, but the key is getting them used to you being in control of when to turn and how. The hardest part is having them look to you for guidance.

He has head down and sniffs constantly and doesn't pay attention to me at all. He's very friendly and I am only just able to get him to stop jumping on people but it is consistent training. He will be good for 1 or 2 days then the next day of training he's a wild animal who is strong willed and very frustrating. I've had 7 dogs over the last 25 years, and I've never had a dog so strong willed and stubborn and I've already spent a fortune on lessons and tools to get him trained and so far nothing is working. Gillian Gair I believe this is very common, should be a quick fix if you have a proper relationship with your dog. When my dog was a puppy I had to correct him two maybe three times and he never even thought twice about lounging at cars. Hopefully by now your puppy understand no. When I corrected my dog I would grab scruff of neck slightly so that he understood what he was doing was unacceptable while saying no. This work with chewing on shoes or anything else for that matter . A couple corrections and they will understand what is and what is not acceptable. Balance give great praise when they behavior correctly

I'm sure your relationship with your pup is fine, dont listen to the othe comments. My suggestion is whenever you see a car approaching, get your dog into the habit of sitting and staying until the car is gone. You can make a game out of it by using the "freeze" command. The end result is to hopefully have the pup stand still when a car passes. Good luck.

Loose leash walking remains my biggest frustration with my 8 month-old Golden Retriever. I attended a class with her, and this was touched on, and distracting her with a high-reward treat (offering it close to my right hip while turning her away from the distraction). The problem is I’m not even able to advance beyond my back yard, because it doesn’t matter what reward I offer her, ie steak, hot dogs, cheese, etc, it’s not enough of an incentive to cause her to turn away from the leaf, twig, piece of grass, et al, and come to me. When I offer the high value reward, she won’t eat it. The most I can get is a big yawn or she’ll stop, sit down, and scratch herself. Even if I can get her to take the reward in her mouth, she immediately spits it out. Any advice from anyone that’s overcome a similar issue would be greatly appreciated! T, ia😊

No judgement in the comments please, be open minded. It’s our first time getting a dog. So we got our dog just a few weeks before winter. Winter came and we had to stay indoors because the roads get extremely slippery. So my dog grew in those months not being able to walk outside everyday. Now during the summer, whenever we’d go out, she would pull the leash so hard. She doesn’t chase people or bark at the cars, but she wants to get to the park as fast as possible. It has gotten to the point where I get frustrated and stressed out because she grew super strong that we would always get into this tug of war. I didn’t want to go for a walk because of this ,_, and now I’m researching every possible way to correct this behaviour. To all the perfect people out there, I’m sorry I’m not good of an owner for you but I’m really doing my best.

Would it be better to take the dog to a place where the dog isn’t going to be successful?? Building on success is a much faster way to teach a dog.

Mine doesn’t care is she’s literally dying of being choked so bad when she pulls, we tried everything… stops and wait until she relaxes (she doesn’t), turns another direction(she just changes the direction she pulls), pull back in pauses, etc. She is DEAF when she’s outside of the house, so no command works😅

My pittie girl and I are both building muscle from her pulling me and me pulling back to try and straighten her out, lol. We are making gains! Lol! But no, she pulls like crazy and she is really strong. I weigh 170 lbs and she pulls me easily if I let her. So I can only imagine how strong she really is. Gonna try the new adjustable, metal buckled collar and work with her and see what happens. Thanks.

My system is, as soon as the lead goes tight i stop, i won't continue until the dog comes back to my side. I may only take 2 steps and it happens again, ill continue until the dog gets fed up. Give praise when behaving correctly

Can you do a tutorial on putting a collar on a dog that’s never still? 😂 “a loose leash” what’s that? About to take her to a dog park. Wish me luck!

This is all great. Stuff but I'm pretty sure they've covered this before how about something about at least reactive dogs what to do when your dog sees another dog and you work so hard to get them to see another dog, but the other dog is freaking out and the other owner wants to push their freaking out dog toward your calm dog

I used the buckle collar with that two-finger method on my puppy. She backed out of the collar and ran away. Fortunately, I was able to get her before she got into trouble.

The gentle leader didn't work properly on our dog. It wouldn't release his nose and kept getting tighter instead. Did we do something wrong? Also, any tips on what to do about him biting my pants when we run together?

My dog is a 10 months old Samoyed. He is TERRIBLE on walks. I have tried about everything at this point, watched and followed the guideline of 30+ humane training videos and I have been patient. The Gentle Leader seemed like it was helping but he realized that when he stops and pulls back, he can get the nose part off. Then, it's game over because he is stronger than I am and he drags me onto the concrete and could very well jump on a kid one day and hurt them badly. He also made me trip and pulled me in the middle of crossing a boulevard. I was also attacked verbally multiple times by KARENS because they think I am using a muzzle. Today, I decided to go in the backyard, on the other side of the fence, just to play with him and spend his energy before training. I did not use the gentle leader then. When he saw a dog walk by, I thought it was a good opportunity to teach him to remain calm. I asked him to sit. He did. I asked him to stay. He did... for 3 seconds before charging at them. F*** the treats. He does not care about them. He just wants love and attention. He is way too social for my own good. Right now I am writing with one hand because he almost broke my wrist by pulling the leash to get to the other dog. I'm icing it and waiting to see if I need to go to the hospital. It can't continue like this. He needs to learn. So here it is: 1. A regular chain choker collar doesn't work and I don't want to hurt him either. 2. A collar like the red one and metal loop doesn't work either. 3. Gentle Leader worked a bit but he whines, stops walking, pulls back, takes it off and also spends his time trying to take it off with his paws. Strangers scream at me and call me names because they think in their little bird brain it's a muzzle. 4. The dog is stronger than I am. I have a back injury that won't ever heal sadly, and I can't hold him without serious aggravation. 6. I play fetch and spend his energy before training. 5. I try to train him to pay attention to me. I try to train him to understand the stay command. I try to train him to greet people calmly. I try to train him to not jump on people... He does not respond. 6. He does NOT care about treats. No matter what kind. What else can I do? Don't tell me to get rid of my dog. I will not.

Hire a professional dog walker for a while. Don’t get hurt. It’s not good that you are getting hurt. If that doesn’t work fence in your back yard and do less walks. You need a pro.
