Do you have. trainer to help you? My trainer was excellent... she was really knowledgeable with dogs that are behaviourally complex. I suggest getting professional help for sure.

Going to put everything you've said into practice for my 1 year old Cavalier king Charles, he's become very destructive when left alone and his whining and barking is getting worse. From this video I can tell a lot of the fault lies with me as I greet him in an excited manner and he feeds off of it or I get annoyed and over correct when he is worked up and won't listen. SO MANY dogs are suffering severely out there with this. The graphics she shows are powerful in revealing this. Dogs are a pack animal. We are asking too much. People should have courses in managing and empathetic care before owning them as well as all animals. Some countries require a license first and education. Genetic changes and physical due to the mother's environment such as cortisol are imparted before birth and the anxiety is with the dog for life keeping a vicious cycle engaged thru generations. It leaves a heartbreaking situation as reconditioning these dogs requires almost professional knowledge. Tragically most dogs get punished sometimes terribly for natural responses and anyone can buy a shock collar. Difficulties in current economic times render folks without the money in a very bad state and fixing this is a big business now many cannot afford nor understand. Much worse is the terrible life for the dog. Perhaps our government should provide teaching compassion and care for animals early in grade school to children or as a public service. This is really nice to provide such videos. Thank you for taking the time.

My dog had so much anxiety before but I've taught him to "kind of" like me leaving by giving him a treat everytime I left the house. He whined a bit at first but after a week of doing it, he no longer barks when I'm gone. Just make sure to keep it consistent and a treat he can work on and won't finish in 2 seconds.

I just want to say thank you for this video. Our rescue had horrible separation anxiety that was only getting worse for months on end. Implementing the strategies in this (especially body blocking and directing her back to her bed) solved her issues literally overnight. We are all so much happier, especially our dog! She is now calm when we're leaving and on the rare day she starts getting anxious about it, blocking and redirecting her to the bed takes care of it. We are seriously SO grateful for this video.

This is great. I think it would have been good for you to have elaborated on the aspects of not making a big deal before you leave and not making a big deal when you return. People want to humanize dogs by thinking they will hurt their feelings if they don't say in a high pitch voice "Bye baby, Mommy loves you!!! You be good while I'm gone! I'll be back soon! I promise!" and when they return, the same thing, they feel like it's emotionally hurtful to the dog if they don't make their entrance like a boisterous reunion celebration. Stopping these exit and entrance ceremonies can help a lot.

thank you so much, this is a great tool, you have a new subscriber. lol, I thought my dog had separation anxiety (because I tried to leave 3x today) and she kept crying, so I decided to stay. the thing that is not helping is she has had surgery since June 15, 2023 and has to be confined and still "patellar luxation" and I've been with her all the time literally "on the floor" (I think this is not helping) because before we were able to be out for 5 hours and she was ok, but now...…..omgness. This was a great training video. The things you discussed are exactly what I'm going through with my new rescue. Hank is a 15 month old shih tzu mix. I noticed when we picked him up and the lady at the rescue walked away he got anxious. Now he does it with me and has been pooping and peeing in his crate even if I take him out. It seems to be getting worse. He will wake up from a dead sleep if I get up and move away and will follow me everywhere. If I walk outside without him I can hear him barking. I'm very frustrated

how's it going? any progress in the past 7 days? I recently adopted a 11 month old boxer. She doesn't bark, but she does whine for a min when i leave and then becomes highly destructive. I'm finding by giving her her time alone, maybe like 5 mins intervals 3 times a day her anxiety is going down. she does best when i keep her in my room with her crate. it is very frustrating though. a year from now it will only be a memory.

This helped with my Chihuahua that was a rescued adult with no formal intel: I left him for 2 minutes at first and I ALWAYS told him, "I'll be right back" The next week, I left him for 5 minute intervals, repeating, "I'll be right back." I showed no nervous energy, just did this in a matter of fact way. I found by adding a few minutes every week, ALWAYS COMING BACK. Now I can leave him and simply tell him, "I'll be back." I hope this helps if you're able to put it into practice. 💕

Very true - walk and food before leaving! But also - don't get a dog when you are gonna be away 8 to 12 hours a day. Dog needs a pack - and where are you? I am lucky to be able to work from home, and I have a very, very attached belgian Tervueren (I am followed everywhere!). He hates being left at home, but accepts it, lays down and waits. But I naver left him longer than 3-4 hours, and only once or twice a week when he was young, so he never got traumatized by long absences when only a puppy. Pay attention to the presence of you in the puppy stage (at least until 7 - 9 months of age) , and you will naturally teach even an attached dog to understand the harmlessness of your brief departure. But if you leave a lone dog alone for 8 hours every day, no video will change the fact that he has a right to be upset. I would be too! It's not like he can watch TV or call a friend. It takes a very mentally strong dog to handle that and still be balanced.

Thanks a lot for this video! I`m not a native speaker, so it was a bit difficult for me to understand some words, but generally everything is clear. 🤩 You`re a very good example of how to behave with dogs. My dog - Yakutian laika is 4 years old and most part of his life I`m at home 24\7. From the very beginning he was toooo emotional at the moments of my absence and I didn`t know how to solve this problem. Presently he is older and a bit more calm, but even now when I need to go somewhere he starts to be sad, nervous and finally he howls all day long until I come home. After this video I understand my mistakes. The biggest one - I don`t leave him in a calm state + I`m emotional myself. And the greatest thing from this video - excitement and happines are two totally separate things (!)

We recently adopted a rescue at our local Humane Society. we believe he’s a mostly lab with a little bit of whatever and he is the sweetest boy ever. Unfortunately he came with having Heartworms and he’s being treated for that. We’ve had him now a month and he’s also going to be neutered next week. He continues with his heartworm medication and will start the injection process a week after he is neutered, he does great with his meds takes them with no problem. We have a seven year-old chocolate lab and they are warming up to each other. He’s perfect in every way except he goes absolutely ballistic when we leave him alone or even with my other dog he howls and cries terribly, and he’s in his crate because we left him unrated the first time he left the house, and he literally tried to climb out a window and almost tore up blinds off the wall. Well he’s treating for heartworm. We’re told that he can’t be too active and can’t get too excited because it’s not good for the treatment of the heart that he is on and it can make the worms active and multiply. So my problem is I’ve had many dogs and I’ve trained them and yes, they howl and scream and whatever but they get used to it but with this little guy he’s not supposed to get upset and he gets absolutely crazy in his crate, so I’ve been taking short walk with my other dog and come home, and I open the crate, and I give him all kinds of loving and praise and he’s fine. In the crate, I have the camera and the sound on and he is working himself up into an awful situation. He literally shakes the crate and a few times it even opened and he got out and like I said he goes for the windows and I can’t have this anymore, I don’t know what to do. I’m at my wits end. I love him dearly. He a sweetheart this is his only problem, but if he was not on the heartworm, I would leave him in the crate and make him just settle down and understand that’s how it’s gonna be And I know that would be OK but he can’t. I don’t know if I’m supposed to do that like I say I’ve been housebound for a month anywhere I go I have to take him. We finally got a crate for the car because he ends up crawling into the front seat so he’s in a crate in the car and that works out fine. He doesn’t cry at all. I’m at my wits end. I need some help I don’t know what I can do. I talked to my Vet and was told just give him time. Plus he’s going through the heartworm process and he really can’t get upset. Well that doesn’t help me very much specially, when my husband‘s patience is growing thinner by day, and he adores him as well. He’s just finished his first round of prednisone and doxycycline but he takes Benadryl and I thought that might be something that would help him relax while in the crate when we’re gone but it doesn’t he gets worked up so bad. I’m hoping that once he’s off this heart guard treatment which probably won’t be till the end or mid June at the earliest then we can treat him like we did the other dogs and get him to understand he’s gonna have to stay in the crate while gone and know that we’re coming back. It’s difficult to know what his history is because he’s about a year and a half and all he wants to do is please. no nipping he eats he does commands someone spend time with him, but someone dumped him as he was found by a good Samaritan, crossing a very busy highway and taken to the Humane Society. I can understand his separation anxiety. He’s probably thinking he’s being dumped off somewhere or we’re never coming back. I just need some advice on how to handle him while he’s on the heartworm treatment because I can’t continue to be housebound and i’m concerned that he’s going to get worse before he gets better and that my husband’s patience is thin. I don’t want to give him back I don’t. I broke down and tear yesterday for the 10th time in the past couple days. sorry for such a long message but I’m desperate, he can’t have any exercise of any kind that would give him any real good exhaustion because of the heartworm treatment. I spend a lot of time with him and like I said everything else about him is perfect and help please

We rescued a dog with severe separation anxiety. We didn't know that he also had medical issues that left him in constant pain until we picked him up. Every time we made progress on the separation anxiety he had to have a surgery and all our progress would be lost. It's been a roller coaster. His medical issues are nearly resolved now and we are really hoping for quick progress now that he's not in pain.

My dog chews up my stuff (I've been through so many caps now - and yes, it's my fault for leaving them somewhere that he can reach up to get them, standing up at the shelf to take my baseball cap off) when I go out for even just 20min or so. He got better for a while, then started doing it again (I think after having us all at home every day during the holidays, and then going back to the work schedule it triggered his separation anxiety all over again). I searched for this video/content because I just (about half an hour ago) got back from the grocery store and he had chewed up a box, a cap, an air filter mask, and a few other small things that were on the shelf next to the front door (he would have to stand up on his back legs to reach up and take things off the shelf but he really targeted the things on that shelf specifically). I immediately tried the new, calmer, "parent" way of making him go lie on his bed - exactly as you suggested in the video - and IMMEDIATE result. He usually stays on his bed just long enough to satisfy my desire for him to be on that space and then gets up and goes somewhere else - usually 5min or so and then he's up and about - but this time, with that calm "parent" type approach, he's STILL lying on his bed, actually relaxed and dozing - almost 30min later!!! Amazing instant result! Thank you! I'm definitely going to work my way through your training videos because I recognize that the problem isn't with the dog, it's with me, the owner. Thank you for this! I love my pooch - his name is Oliver - he adopted me when he was a street puppy of 4months (he's around 11 months old now) rummaging around in a trash can for scraps and I couldn't resist taking him something to eat and we've been buddies ever since he came home with me and never left and now he lives in my apartment with me and my partner (and had all his shots and clean bill of health and cleaned up to be a very handsome boy). I realize now that "buddies" = the wrong relationship dynamic - he follows me around the house ALL THE TIME ... gets FAR too excited when we get home (like OVER THE TOP excited) and gets separation anxiety when we leave - and now I recognize that this has to do with the relationship dynamic that we allowed/set up. We need to be the parents and take the worry off his shoulders. Again, thank you for such an informative and useful video and I look forward to working through the channel and learning as much as I can so that Oliver (Ollie) and his daddies have a happy, healthy relationship. ALSO...I ADORE YOUR ACCENT - it makes listening to the videos even more pleasurable! Forgive the essay long comment...lol.

Hi, my dog is 9 months old, a goldendoodle and she is super people oriented, so I really appreciate how you discussed that some dogs are naturally more pack oriented than others. I hadna scottish terrier for 13 years and she was not people oriented at all, and actually I personally would consider her an easier dog than my Goldendoodle due to this. With my scotty I never had hardly any blowback whatsoever to kennel training. However, my goldendoodle has ALWAYS whined when putting her in the crate. I finally gave up. My dog is fine if I leave her in my car to go to the store, but she thinks she is left alone at the house she starts running and crying throughout the house. I know this because my husband was napping when I left and he told me this is what she did. I have nit left her home alone at all except for half an hour about a week ago. IF I can get her in the crate and block her from coming out, what do I do when she starts barking or crying? Also, can I use a treat to get her in the crate? How many times a day should I do this exercise? She is not hyper, but seems to ultra crave mental and verbal interaction and get bored easily. Thanks.

Excellent video, Angie! We have a Catahoula Leopard dog (with some Aussie Shep dog mix) of 3 years of age, who's been with us for just over 7 months. She has had hyper preparation anxiety from the get go, She was bandeed about from home to home and streets. She is calming down a but but still follows me everywhere in and out of the house. Goes nuts when I touch the keys, or my watch or start to put on my shoes... she approaches me, makes a lot of noise (she is talkative anyway). Very smart and very active. Absolutely HATES crates even though we have a smaller one in the back of our SUV and it is the only one she will jump into but chews anything I lay down to pieces - just ordered "Gorilla" mat that is supposed to be "chew proof" or resistant- ha.

my dog probably has seperation anxiety to an extent and that's y im here in the first place. he does follow me around alot sometimes, but he's deffinitely doesn't keep tabs on me becauseh he's worried about me, he is just clueless about what to do when i'm not there, he needs the structure and guidance and when it's not there it 'd make him anxious - what i'm trying to say is, he has issues that involve him being overattached and dependent. what do i do to make him slightly more independent and confident in himself to stay alone?

I enjoyed the factual, specific approach to this topic. One question? My 8 month old Yorkie has always done well when I leave the house and run my errands. The problem has been his anxiety when I leave the room and am out of sight. He has become so anxious that he barks insistently until I return. It is causing a problem with some neighbors. I have heard from a number sources that you ignore him till he is calm and quits barking , then reward him when he does behave. Am I doing it wrong?

I would teach him a place command, or if you use the crate, put him in the crate, and do what you need to do around the house. If you hear whining/barking, you can correct verbally (a firm "No"), if it's not enough, you can use a pet corrector, or an ecollar to correct remotely.

I’ve read that you shouldn’t leave your dog alone while doing the separation anxiety training. I have to leave my dog alone for around half an hour a day. Would the training still work for him even though I’m leaving him?

Going to use this to try and help my dog. He howls constantly when he is left alone in his crate (for his own protection), sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for a few hours. He just doesn't give up and its driving my roommates and neighbors insane.

Great video! I’m going to try this with my 15 year old Lucy girl…it won’t be easy. She howls and barks constantly every time I leave her. Now that she is losing here hearing and sight, it’s got worse. I use calming treats but it doesn’t help. She loves her crate so this might be a good solution! Wish me luck!

I have a rescue puppy. Well, now 75lb puppy. Giant Schnauzer/Lab mix. I think he can SMELL when I'm about to leave. I work from home so I am nearly always home. I also take him everywhere I go if I can. But there are times - obviously - when I can't. When I do leave him, he howls like he is being hurt or tortured. It breaks my heart. I am definitely going to try your suggestions. He has never destroyed anything while I'm away. There is also evidence that he lays in wait in our bed... at some point. But when I come home. He is explosive happy. Jumping and clawing. I have thin skin and my arms look as though I sleep with Freddy Krugar! Lots of scars. Other than his anxiety, he is a wonderful, loving, sweet dog!

@@agentcatalan8454 Well, no. I tried a different approach. One I heard about but which takes a lot of effort. I started grabbing my keys, the dog would get excited. I would immediately put them back and walk away. I would do this a few times a day. Then I started grabbing the keys and walking out the door, only to immediately return and replace my keys. Each time, I would do this a few times a day until I started short trips to the post, grocery store... etc. I work from home, so it was somewhat easier for me to do. Now, he might get excited when I grab my keys, as I still take him places with me. But at the door, I just say, "Not this time, Philo!" When I leave, now all he does now is sleep on the bed or living room rug. But always excited to see me return. A habit I do not wish to break.

Pablo is afraid of vacuum cleaners, but not thunder or fireworks. He has awful seperation anxiety, and that is the way he was when i adopted him. He was kept in a small travel kennel 12+ hours a day. And on that point he will go nuts if put him in a kennel. When I've flown I've always had to sedate him. He is fine uf someone is with him or even another dog. In losing ny sight so im looking into a a guide dog. This is an awesome video. Thank tou so much ❤

we have adopted a spaniel puppy recently who howls when l leave the room but I suspected she was not doing it out of anxiety (as she is always happy to go to her bed quietly at night) but gets herself over excited during the day and constantly begs for attention. tried some of these techniques as I watched the video and could see a difference immediately!

I had my dog for 14 years he had separation anxiety when he was younger he chewed a hole in my wool rug when was out for many hours . But I just delt with it I didnt mind having him follow me all the time i actually liked because I have separation anxiety too myself 😅 (I think) he pumped my legs when he saw me got the car key or wore pants or even open certain drawer. He passed away this March when he was 14.5 I miss him following me around in the house. And the feeling of losing him is painful. So I enjoyed him following me

Is it acceptable to crate a dog when leaving the house for any period or is it a band-aid? I feel like I would rather him be free but he paces while we are gone (camera in area) which was an improvement from pee and poop. So I would keep him crated. Now with Christmas, we had to move his crate to a different part of the house for the Christmas tree, I feel like we are back to step one. He broke out and did his business in our shoes. I am guessing that might be normal anxiety because of moving his place? We adopted him about 5 months ago and is about 2yo they estimated. Suspected Dachshund/Beagle mix.

I want to add, he typically likes his crate, often sleeping in it on his own. His options on the first floor which he is only allowed on is a bed and his crate which he chooses between randomly on his own.

Hi there, I have a new dog who is about 3 years old. I got him a week ago. Whenever I leave he tends to want to try to break out of the yard. I have a fenced-in back area that has access to the house and a pretty good size yard for him and the other two dogs to run around and play. However, he has gotten out a couple of times. The other dogs do not even know this is an option. What can I do to help him with this. He seems to be panicked when I leave. He seems to be panicked when I get home. I do my best to get him used to the new surroundings, but I haven't been overly successful. Successful. Seems to be doing better as he is not throwing up or having accidents in the house. His previous owner was a nurse and she kept him in a crate for 12 hours a day. Should I do that too since it's familiar or should I do something else. Any help you can provide as much appreciated.

Exact same with my Pablo. Only time I crate him is when we are flying but always have to sedate him. I think the 12+ hours a day in a tiny kennel is what caused the separation anxiety.

Finally won the battle with my hubby and bought a crate for our unruly 3 yr old Walker. BTW, I stay at home. She loves her bed! Was sleeping in the crate within 2 hours of setting it up. BUT, when we leave the house...she goes nuts. We we get back, she is uncontrollable. Barking nonstop. Even getting ready to leave, she won’t settle. Looks like this video will help me!

My 8 yr old Walker was ok being in the crate while I’m home but became self destructive when left alone. We had to ditch the crate and do daycare while doing exercises with our animal behaviorist. We are 2 months into these excercises : open/close door; exit, lock door, walk 20 steps: pick up keys, walk to car: etc... it’s a long process trying to make it a “boring” game... I think hounds (walkers and beagles) really are susceptible to anxiety distress. Hopefully we get to her tolerating if fixing isn’t the reality

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much, but he barks A LOT... So, leaving home is always a challenge for us. My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? I’m watching this because my bestfriend and I live together and we have a standard poodle her name is Dali. My bestfriend is her person so I think she thinks she’s her parent. I’m not sure how she sees me. I know she loves both of us and respects us both I’m more of the trainer but their bond is stronger so I’ve had my bestfriend do the training and I teach her tricks or stimulate her with exercise or teaching her new things. However she’s very dominant we got her when she was a year and a half not allot of structure at all but we’ve taught her stay, sit, lay down, and when she’s in the kennel she can’t come out unless she has the out command. Her recall is there but it’s not as strong as I would like . Though my bestfriend is her preferred person she doesn’t do a lot of training with her due to work and lack of knowledge (she’s learning though) so I still do the training through her . I tell my bestfriend what we should do and then have her do it with Dali. Just trying to learn how to Coparent with my friend . Any recommendations????
