Thank you so much Professor Tom! Your videos have taken my game to an entirely new level, I'm now equal to my teams purple belts, and I'm just an orange belt! I am waiting for my birthday to come around so hopefully my parents can buy me your instructionals, I'm sure they are just as helpful (if not more) as your channels videos.

Love this content, as a 47 year old white belt facing younger, fitter, faster men nearly every roll (and the few older ones are all much more experienced!) I spend alot of time in bottom side control defending until I gas. Hopefully I can take some of these principles into class tonight and get a little more success in guard retention!

Maybe you are elongating your body too much, extending your legs all the way and giving up a free pass? I had that same problem and remembering to make myself small and compact at the right times really helped my guard retention

Break oponents posture from closed guard Establish an open guard (de la riva, reverse de la riva) Use legs on both sides of opponents body to retain guard Deflect his head and hip escape Frame with stiff arms When opponent passes guard, go to knees, turtle, and eventually retain guard

Thank you. I have been in bjj for 8-9 months and I am ok at maintain or retaining guard on other white belts, but any color belt passes with ease! I am one of the bigger guy at 6’2” 210 but it does not seem to matter with color belts. And the ones that are close to my weight SMASH the hell out of me when passing! Any suggestions appreciated.

Adjust your grips, dont lay your back still on the floor, lean and move your hips more, learn a few sweeps, seems to be working for me, im also 6.2 and man, the homoplatas and triangles are inevitable agains those short guys

Interesting to see how the deeper you go into the sport of bjj, the further you get from real life or mma usefulness. Still value in learning the moves but I wonder if that hinders people who want to use bjj outside of the sport
@scarred103 жыл бұрын
The thing is that after a year or so of grappling with strikes,it becomes very limited and kind of boring so advanced students will prefer sport grappling as the room for growth is endless. Even the Gracie academy does lots of sport bjj at the higher belts.
