Joe Buske Excellent point . That’s the same exact thing I was thinking . That box is 100% compromised after the first battery . So I believe the second test isn’t accurate . Even if The manufacturer says it can be used again I wouldn’t . That 6s lipo going off was in fucking sane ! I watched a 6s go off in another video and I swear it’s the equivalent of a jet engine ! I think I’ll just stick to my lipo bag inside a ammo box and continue keeping it in my shed . I’d rather lose my shed then my house

True, I wouldn't re-use the box after a fire, and as stated, that second battery is way over the limit. But it's still a useful data point to see - I probably wouldn't even push the limit they claim (6S-10Ah). That 6S-16Ah looked like a Saturn V taking off. I'll probably limit myself to 3, 3S-5000mAh.

Can I reuse a bat safe after a fire? Mike Yes, you can, every time I tested a Bat-Safe I used the same box over and over. There is no loss in protection. I have seen some melting of the wire way in a very bad fire. But only to the rubber pull tab. I figure if you ever have a fire in the Bat-Safe, spending another 60 on a new box would be the best buy you ever made!

Not terribly impressed by your test using an already "spent" bat safe. I consider these and their construction to be a one-time-use disposable wear item. Once it's saved you, get a new one. I'm curious if your first test compromised the top vents, causing a more explosive result. The first test shows good venting out of most of the holes, while your second video looks choked a bit. This could cause excess pressure in addition to the battery puffing. Without a new box you introduce variables... you could have tested the same pack twice, but moving to a bigger pack with a used box isn't very conclusive.
@RajuCam5 жыл бұрын
On Bat-safe webpage under FAQ there is a question about re-use and the producer has stated that it is OK to re-use the same box multiple times. The failure with the bigger battery has most likely two simple reasons - the battery pack expanded and pushed the lid a bit open and the box is not rated for this kind of battery.

was the big battery at storage charge, full charge, or overcharge? I think it was overcharged, which of course is the best test of the box and easiest way to make a lipo fire on demand. A storage charge fire of that size battery would be a lot less of course. Do you think the flame would have burst out the seam if the battery were at storage charge?
@brianwest27752 жыл бұрын
They definitely purposefully apply current that will force it to catch fire. There wouldn't be much point doing the test if you didn't start with a fully charged battery, although people often do these tests with batteries that are at end of life because, well, money.

@RajuCam6 жыл бұрын
This one is rated for 6S 5000mAh if I remember correctly. They also have a new XL one, that supports more batteries. You can charge and store up to a 4pc 6S 5000mAh equivalent (500Wh) safely inside the BAT-SAFE X large.

Thank you for the info! I just took a tally of how many sets of Lipos I have... 15 sets of 4 lipos a piece (all mainly 4-cell and below).. thats a lot of lipos! I'm planning to relocate all of my Lipos to my detached garage. My only concern is that it does get fairly warm in there during the summer months. I just plan to keep them there, away from my condo, as I have pets and wouldn't want any harm to come to them. I do keep them in storage charge when not in use and only charge the ones that I know will be used in the next day or so.

6s 5Ah, RC grade, are already scary. I am comfortable with dealing up to 3s 2-3Ah. They can cause catastrophic fire, but you can deal with it by stepping on it, even if there is no fire extinguisher around. That 6s 16Ah is immediately a life threatening situation when outside the box.
@cicciottobiscotto50706 жыл бұрын
I have a question: since you state the capacity of the battery, I assume that: 1) You set the batteries off when they are fully-charged 2) A battery going off at storage charge (ca. 30% capacity) would be less destructive than a fully-charged one. Are the above assumptions correct? Thanks for the videos! :)
@RajuCam6 жыл бұрын
Cicciotto Biscotto, both correct. A battery in storage capacity is a lot less likely to go off and when it does, it is less agressive.

Well the second test was pointless because even though the battery was bigger than the box is rated, the insulation already was compromised so the second test would have had to be done with a new box to have any point.
