Guys! I am 55 years old and have coins stored since 1971 that my father bought. This is easy, remove the oxygen supply from the equation....go to Fin feather Fur or Harbor Freight or some gun show and get a $10 ammo can, drop a pack of the dehumidifier form the monthly new shoe's box your wife brings home, then use cheese cloth from Dollar Tree to wrap them in layers, or the brown paper most bullion dealers use for shipping (NO PLASTIC WITH PVC), like a lasagna, and it will NEVER tarnish. Ammo cans keep ammunition for more than 50 years without going bad, NO HUMIDITY in them and you can fill it up with gold weighing 80 pounds and still strong enough to grab by the handle. And, you can bury it if you need to. Neither water nor heat will kill it.

I guess it's a good idea to buy coins in tubes instead of buying loose coins. Otherwise it is complicated to buy tubes separately, and it is not cost effective to buy dozens of capsules for lose coins. Most tubes contain 25 coins, others 20, like the Phillarmonics.

Is there anything to worry about as far as effecting the appearance of the coin when using air tight capsules. Would there be any discoloration once the the silver coins are exposed to air after being stored for years in airtight capsules?

Tubes: I like the circular Whitman tubes. They have twisting tops, and are very clear (at least when you first get them!), so you can see what's in them without fuss. I agree on the non-twisting tubes. Very insecure. Even if you're very careful, I don't like tops that can just pop off if you drop them

I noticed PVC in sheets / flips is very dangerous to silver. However I noticed on a capsule order I had, the ones I received on the packaging had a note saying material PVC and EVA, will the PVC in these coin capsules destroy my silver coins as well? I just cased a ton of morgans before I reordered the larger packs for more and the prior did not mention the PVC.

Milk spots can develop months, even years after purchase. I have had coins develop spots in capsules and tubes. Tarnish doesn’t seem to be a problem, but a couple of the 2020 ASEs I bought had slight toning on the edge when I got them. Doesn’t bother me as bullion coins are bullion coins. Most of my more numismatic coins in capsules rarely spot, like proof ASE’s, and Perth Mint stuff. Queens beasts and proof maples tend to spot pretty bad over time.
@floridastacker

I was walking home when I walked by the Mint in Ottawa. I saw that they sold some 10 oz bars and, as I had some cash from my graduation, decided to get one on a whim. However, when I got home I realized that the plastic seal that it came with was broken. Is this a severe issue? I understand silver tarnishes quite quickly and I wouldn't want its value to decrease (though I've been reading online that tarnishing apparently doesn't). I've just put it into a food ziplock bag that I sucked all the air out of and then stuffed it into a little watch container for now. But my questions is what should I do? Order one of those little containers you had? Or would it be fine out of the plastic? Many thanks!
@floridastacker
@floridastacker Жыл бұрын
I have a few bars with ripped plastic and yes they will tone in that area over time. It won't really decrease the value so to speak but some potential buyers may pass. It's up to you if you want to capsule the bar. They are nice but be careful sliding them around as they scratch easy (the plastic) and over time they start to look less appealing with a lot of scratches. I like to keep my bars in the original plastic if I can, but have capsules on a couple I like to show in my videos

Anyone … I’ve used the plastic containers. Question: is it bad use use a spacer material between each coin in the tube? I use the white foam material that’s inside the delivery box. I cut them in disc ( size of the coin) and place one spacer between each coin. It limits me to 10 coins but reduces play in the tube and more of a snug fit. Is it bad for the silver to do this? It’s a soft material so does not scratch . Thanks for any response..

I like that he takes care of his stack, as many don't because they know melt will be the same..dirty or clean. Every BU coin or round I have is in an airtight capsule. Silver Eagles, Maple Leafs, Morgan rounds, etc. Why wouldn’t I? If I have a BU coin it’s silly to let it degrade. I’m not an investor, I’m a hoarder. My stack is a hedge against a failing dollar and hyper inflation. I don’t sell anything in my stack. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t take care of them. Besides, capsules are cheap, and I enjoy doing the small amount of work it takes to preserve them. I also use BU coins as Christmas presents. In a capsule with foam they make a nice little gift that doesn’t break the bank.

And I have a problem getting rid of morgans I just can't do it I like the history aspect of them. Eagles on the other hand are nice but also disposable for me if needed. Once I reach my goal it's time to exchange for some bars to save space or gold depending on prices.

Milk spotting may happen no matter what you do as it’s a result of a cleaning agent from the minting process. It may still tarnish it really depends on the atmosphere it the capsules do add protection. They are mostly unnecessary for silver bullion but some choose them.

Hi Jeff, I use the 20 round/coin tubes due to space. The Maples in particular are thicker and less wide and the tubes of 25 are too tall for the shelves in my safe. I prefer to go with 20 of each just for that reason but if I were not space constrained I'd just stack the 25.

I started out doing that, but it became too expensive and bulky. Now I only store numismatic coins and the most pristine bullion coins in capsules. The rest go in tubes, Especially generics. Even buying BU, a lot of bullion get spots. The worst are Britannia’s, but ASEs spot a lot too.

Is it correct that you really have to look out with the material the coin capsules are made off ?

Avoid PVC. I'd just buy from reputable coin supply shops to avoid any issues.

VERY informative video. Works with any coin collecting. Many dealers will pay you less for dirty bullion. People are so picky when it comes to coins.

Check the Volume of Kangaroos vs Maple Leafs, and if the Leafs sell more per year, then they would likely be the 2nd most popular bullion coin in the world.

Tubes…..keep them in tubes. Fancy cases aren’t worth anything when you sell your coins and bars. Plus, some of the prices on capsules are ridiculous. I usually get my tubes from my local dealer I regularly buy from for free.

I want all my coins in capsules!! But realize how ridiculous that is (space and cost) once you amass a hundred coins, lol. My LCS was kind enough to give me two capsules for free, during my last purchase of 6 coins. 😊

I’m new to stacking, so I’m wondering if there’s any galvanic reaction from the silver touching each other in the tubes? Also, should you clean the coins before you store them?

I’m new at stacking, I never riced a few coins with spots. I’m confused since the spots seemed brownish are those milk spots or something else. Should they be stored separately?

I’m very much like you in terms of storage preferences. As I’ve matured into middle age, I realize that I’ve become VERY particular about certain things. Maybe stacking is a way for me to exercise that mild personality disorder! 😂 Have to pick up one of those Guardhouse boxes. Those are the cat’s pajamas! 🐈 😉

The lighthouse capsules are a little different. I am sure they are perfectly fine but they are sized a little different and didn't work as well with my tubes/boxes. For me the guardhouse boxes work nicely so i went with the guardhouse capsules to ensure the right fit.

I have Chinese silver pandas and 1and 5 ounce silver bars that I left in the original plastic sheets, and in the cardboard box, for 6 years now. What do you recommend for long term storage, take them all out and put pandas in tubes or capsules, and bars, tubes or capsules, or leave them in original plastic sheets? I heard the sheets will tarnish the silver after many years? Thanks for your helpful informative videos. Peace.

A great presentation on how to protect coins. The next step is to protect capsules from scratching. I put every capsule and 2x2 into its own 2"x2 3/4" ziplock bag like the one you removed a new capsule from. I then store them in double row boxes designed for 2x2's, which is more space saving that the Guardhouse capsule box. This allows you to easily remove a coin by pulling on the top of the bag and you can also make notes on the top using a permanent sharpie.
