Have you ever got an alignment done on your car but the steering wheel isn't straight? In todays video I show how to do an at home front end alignment on your car to straighten out your steering wheel. Adjusting your tie rod ends is an easy way to align your steering wheels in a simple way. I installed lowering springs and new wheels on my wife's car, and after getting a professional alignment on all 4 wheels to insure even tire wear. While the car tracks perfectly straight, the steering wheel is a bit off center. I'll be driving in a straight line and the car doesn't pull at all, but the steering wheels doesn't look straight. It's slightly crooked while driving in a straight line. When I straighten out the steering wheel, the car start turning to the right. In todays video I make a small adjustment to the left and right tire rod end to turn the wheels to the left a bit. One full rotation on each tie rod pulling both front wheels to the left made the steering wheel nice and straight. Since I did the same full rotation on each side, the wheels will still have the same alignment with no issues, but now the steering wheel won't be crooked while driving straight. This is the easy way to straighten your steering wheel in relation to the wheels of the car! How to straighten steering wheel on your car. Crooked steering wheel? This at home alignment fixes that.

@RoxusRemo
@RoxusRemo 9 ай бұрын
@@juanojeda8069 You need to do it to both sides to keep the alignment. So in his case, car was drifting right..so need to adjust the toe left.. so he shortened drivers side rod (this pulls the rear of the wheel closer so it turns the whole wheel left and then extend/lengthen the passenger side so it 'pushes' the rear of the wheel which turns the wheel left also.
@microbrientube
@microbrientube 2 ай бұрын
@@RoxusRemowait I think I see how I fucked up. So “opposite” turn directions, is actually the same, because the rods are pointing opposite directions. So clockwise one side, counterclockwise the other means they both get turned away from you (pushed over) or turned toward you (pulled under) if you’re perpendicular to them

Great video, very well done! Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Installed a new tie rod because of rattling going over bumps, and vibration when braking at higher speed, mechanic couldn’t figure out what was causing it, so I replaced the tie rod myself and was able to get the steering wheel back to straight again from being off centered. Holding it at 12:10 to drive straight was killing me. So I adjusted the set screw and within a couple try’s, my wheel was straight again. Saved time because I would have taken the entire tie rod off again to re count the 14 rotations or just add/minus but your way was much faster 🙏🏼 thanks again!!!

Thanks man, great video! I had the same problem on my 2012 Camry only opposite of your Audi. My front wheels needed to go slightly to the right. I did one full turn on the adjusters like in your video. But, in my case it was just a bit too far and steering wheel was slightly off in the other direction. So, ended up having to do the adjustments a second time. I returned the adjusters a bit back so that they were both exactly 1/2 turn from where they were originally. 2nd test drive and sucess! Straight track and straight wheel. Kinda sucked having to do it twice but I guess it's trial and error with different vehicles. Still saved me alot of money and hassle with alignment shop! Wanted to say thank you! Like you and many others I had an alignment done after having my rack and pinion changed out in my 2012 Toyota Tundra. Like yours my steering wheel was slightly cocked right driving me nuts but not so much i felt like spending half a day at the dealership correcting it. Only difference between my truck and your Audi, much larger tie rods and they were kinda tough to get that nut loose. One small suggestion to others. I started with a half turn as opposed to a full turn. After test driving the steering wheel was cocked the other direction. Jacked the truck back up and reversed it a 1/4 turn and it’s now perfect. 1 full turn is quite a bit depending on the vehicle and how off the steering wheel is. May want to start with a 1/2 turn and go from there. Thanks again, great video!

I wouldn’t know exactly. But I think trial and error is the most straight forward way. I got lucky and 1 turn got it perfect on my first try. Just mark the tie rod and the end part and do the same turn and see how it helps. Go from there. Based on this, 1 turn probably got the wheels a few degrees straighter

I just did this on my B8.5 Audi S4, I don’t know exactly but I would estimate it at 1 degree per 1/8 turn. Mine was about 2 degrees off center and I turned it a little over 1/4 turn and went too far. Obviously every car is different, but the tie rod position and thread pitch are both fixed, so the degree per turn should be linear.

Unless Audi has some different threads, I did that on my 2016 Ford Focus and my crookedness was similar to the one depicted in the video but all I needed was just 1/8 of a turn to make the steering wheel straight so one full turn I agree seems to be pretty drastic.

Nice video. Using your method to straighten my steering wheel. But I do have a question. By turning the tie rod evenly on each side, although this straightens the steering wheel, but does it also mess up the toe in/ out from the alignment shop as well ? Toe in/ out adjustment is also by turning the tie rod.
@BrosFOURRSpeed
@BrosFOURRSpeed Жыл бұрын
As long as you do both sides evenly, you'll be good. And this is only good if you've already had an alignment to ensure tires are all correct. So get a real alignment first, then if your steering wheel isnt centered. Do even rotations on each tie rod and you'll be solid. If your car hasn't been aligned in a long time, you could throw things off
@jr4459
@jr4459 8 ай бұрын
This is absolutely adjusting the alignment. You're changing one wheel more toe in and the other toe out. Evenly, as the way you've done it, but it is changing one of the for possible things adjusted in an alignment....toe, thrust, camber, and caster.
@Panzerlang

In my experience of getting wheel alignment, none of these tyre centres are using the clamp that fits up under the bottom of the steering wheel, and the top of the drivers seat. This clamp obviously hold the steering wheel in place, while the mechanic carries out the wheel alignment. It's very frustrating. Tanx for the very beneficial upload !!! 👌

Quick question, what do you mean by you made the driver side smaller and you pulled the knuckle in closer? That’s the area im kind of confused on
@BrosFOURRSpeed
@BrosFOURRSpeed 9 ай бұрын
The tie rod end. When you twist it, it pulls the knuckle either closer or pushes it farther away. The tie rod end is a screw basically. If you tighten the threads it will shorten the tie rod and therefor pull the knuckle its attached to closer in. If you back the threads out, you'll be making the tie rod end longer and pushing the knuckle away.

Do you have to take the wheels off? I’ve seen comments elsewhere where ppl are either doing it with tires on the ground if the are doing this on big trucks or driving up on ramps. Just curious if removing tires is necessary if you can access the tie rods on ramps or on the ground. Car wouldn’t be lifted and wheels would be on ground in either of those situations.

A little off to left for it to go straight and when I straighten it, my car would drift to the right slowly. I followed the steps exactly like you told me and it actually further turned my wheel to the left so I did it the opposite of what you did as far as turns on tie rods go and it fixed my steering to where it's straight now. Do you know what could cause mine to be the opposite as compared to yours?
