I am 57 . I know I was tongue tied but never heard that I could have it fixed. I cant really lick an ice cream cone. I usually bite the ice cream. Also oral sex is a bit difficult. I actually feel a bit funny about getting this done being that I lived with it for my entire life. I am a bit disturbed that my parents did not take care of this when I was a kid. I biggest fear is the pain I with feel recovering and I am afraid that a nerve will get damaged and I will end up with a numbness on the tip of my tongue.

Thank you for sharing this. My 11 year old just had her tongue and lip release and though she is still sore, I see so much improvement. Her anxiety level had decreased significantly with the oromyo funcitonal therapy leading up to the release, but since the release the tension is visibly missing. We are so thankful for that. She woke up the next day and looked and felt rested, which is a new thing for her.

I will be sharing my page with my Sleep Happy community because there is so little information out there about adult tongue ties.

my dentist says my tongue is tied and wants to laser it. i'm not convinced it's not mainly an upsell in my case. she has said in the past that i probably have trouble clearing food away from some of my teeth with my tongue, but idk about that. most recently, she claims it's causing the tongue-side gum tissue at the base of my bottom front teeth to pull away, and i'm thinking, well maybe, but you're having me pull my tongue further back than i think i ever really do otherwise. sure, my enunciation isn't the best sometimes, but i don't think i have any of the chronic pain issues people say tongue-tie can cause. i feel like it might not be worth the weeks of discomfort and painful exercises, and the permanent mutilation just to fix something i don't really -feel- is a problem. i'm going in for a filling (or re-filling, iirc) tomorrow, and they're wanting to schedule the tongue release then. i think this comment is me trying to sort through the nerves and figure out how to express my concerns.

4 days post-op update: unfortunately, there was a piece of tissue that came popping out of my wound when I did my first set of stretches that night. I did mention it to my therapist on Thursday (1 day post op), as that tissue turned into a clear blister bubble. But, she never heard of that happening and she wasn’t worried about it as she felt like it was something that my body could probably just reassorb or get rid of itself. 🤷🏻♀️ However, now I’m thinking that’s messing up my healing process, and I have a feeling I may have to go and get it redone as I can’t get a good view of the bottom half of the diamond shape that I’m supposed to have. I tried emailing my myotherapist yesterday with pictures, and really not expecting a reply back until tomorrow sometime. That bubble is now a thick piece of white tissue that is still sticking out of my wound, and I can’t get rid of it myself. It’s not causing me pain, but don’t think it’s helping my wound to heal like it should.

I was following your story these last few months after determining my son might have lip tie and tongue tie. His nursing was very sloppy - noisy, gulping air, needing to burp A LOT. However - it was not causing me pain and his weight gain has been crazy amazimg (doubling weight from birth within a month! Etc) But finally after some debating we decided to have it evaluated and discoveree both lip and tongue had tightness. He had laser surgery done. Watching your video gave me some insight on what he might be feeling post surgery and if it would be worth it or not. Now, I am coming back to your channel wondering if you have a post tongue tie surgery video like several months or a year post surgery that shares if you have noticed a difference?? I am curious because my 4 month old can't tell me lol, and he is still learning to nurse properly now that his tongue is loosened up.... But I am seriously considering taking my 11 year old in for an evaluation. I recall him doing some similar things as my current baby while nursing... and he struggles with some speech. He gets tired a lot too. I am starting to wonder if he has a tight tongue and wonder if the surgery would give him relief.. But if you felt, post surgery, it didn't change much.. then I wouldn't want to put him through the pain for no reason! When you posted your video about how your neck felt lighter and shoulders not tight, I wondered if my 11 yr old experiences some of his tiredness and such due to working so hard to move his tongue...hm..!! Hope you check these comments ;)

I just had mine released, at this moment I’m about 13 hours removed from my operation. Is it normal to feel limited and throat muscles to be sore? I’ve been doing the myobrace and tongue training before my operation so my muscle likes to stay up there now. I just feel like I haven’t been able to extend as much as I would like to probably cause of the discomfort. I’m hoping to do what you did with the uvula tomorrow.

I had a tongue tie release and hoped my tongue would rest comfortably on the palate afterward, but getting it there still requires a little work. Don't you have to use any force to get your tongue to rest on your palate? Also, I saw some pictures online which said your tongue should ideally be able to reach your upper front teeth when your mouth is completely opened. I can't quite do that... Can you? Appreciate your video! I see it's a couple of years old... I hope you are still around!

@@rbaid161 Hi Rachel, mine was done with electrokauter too, and got like 12 stiches to close the wound. After 1 week I began to to excercises 10 mins a day, and my doctor said it's looking very goof now and I don't thrust my tongue anymore. My surgery was 2 weeks ago but chewing a gum and trying to blow a bubble or sticking out my tongue is still painful. Quick question, but first some background, my qirlfriend is slightly tongue tied and wants to get a release. The thing is, she's one of those girls who's been blessed with excellent brain to tongue muscle nerve connection, coordination and control, which means that whenever she yawns, her tongue muscle involuntarily flexes up into a cup or bowl shape inside of her mouth on it's own. She has absolutely no control over it when she yawns and absolutely cannot keep her tongue down when yawning. What she's afraid of is having her tongue frenulum lasered or cut but then causing damage to the healing because of her tongue cupping when yawning. She does have a cleft tongue which means her tongue has a heart shaped split when it's in the cup shape either from yawning or just flexing it up on her own, so my question is will her tongue cleft ease the tension when she cups her tongue and will the laser/snip scab be damaged by her tongue cupping yawns?

Hi, Mandy. Thank you for sharing your tongue tie release experience with us. I am scheduled to have mine in late August and I feel a little less anxious now that I've watched your experience. Before you had the procedure done, did you have sleep apnea? And muscular pain and tightness in your neck, upper traps, and jaw? I suffer from all of these and my Myofunctional therapist said there's a good chance these issues could go away or lessen after the release. Any input on this would be so helpful. Thanks for reading this and your time. :)
@smileybear82716 жыл бұрын
No worries. Thanks for replying. 😊 Yes, I hope my tension releases in all those areas, which would be a great burden lifted off of me. I suffer from anxiety so I'm sure that doesn't help it either. My pain mgmt Dr was trying to scare me out of doing the frenectomy, as he "thinks" my sleep will worsen because of fear of my "released" tongue blocking my air passage way even more so.. Not sure I understand his logic since I'm doing exercises to strengthen my tongue and lips to prevent that. Anyways, thanks for posting your experience, answering my questions, and soothing my doubts. I will have mine done in just a little less than 2 months. I will be having it done the traditional way and not laser. 🙏🙏🙏 I'm praying this helps with many of my health issues.

Thank you for sharing your experience! You have such a positive attitude about all of this - thank you for that! I'm at the beginning of the same process and have been pretty bummed that this was not addressed when I was a child. You mentioned in an earlier video how your sisters had tongue ties as well. Have any of you been presented with treatment options to correct the jaw structure? I'm curious about ALF and other dental devices.
@cheryls98916 жыл бұрын
I'm currently going through the ALF process and after 8 months of it, my upper teeth flared out very noticeably which is bad. Now I'm being told I have tongue thrust and tongue tie and I have to take care of them. I might also have fascia tightness affecting my tongue since it's stronger on one side. My lower jaw is doing fine with the ALF. If you do the ALF, just make sure you have all tongue issues taken care of and get the green light from an orofacial myologist. Chewing tough foods also activates the bone to grow during the ALF treatment, something else they forgot to tell me until months later. My flared upper teeth don't allow for me to chew because the bite is off causing pain. I just wanted to bring up some things that didn't go right so you could address them up front if you decide to do the ALF.

I would love an update. I'm worried my sleep apnea will get worse with the frenectomy. Having a high, narrow palate leaves little room for the tongue. Lots of people recommending palate expander before or after.
@nicolletesand22055 жыл бұрын
Everyone I've seen has said "after." Your tongue on the roof of your mouth is your natural palate expander. Your lips together is your body's natural retainer. The myofunctional therapy will strengthen your lips and tongue. That way your tongue works in tandem with your expander. Most expanders are pretty bulky but some like the ALF works with your tongue. The major thing with tgat device is that you are looking at 4-5 years in an adult. They work much faster om kids. Craniosacral therapy will help expedite the therapy.

Just learned a few days ago that I am tongue tied and I'm 45 with braces for over two years. Very surprised that none of my orthodontist even mentioned it. I just thought I'd go see a tmj dr for grinding. Anyway they quoted me over 3k so I figured I better save up for it. Had my teeth cleaned by a new dentist a couple days later and mentioned it and to my surprise she said they did that and other things there such as botox treatment for my clinching. The kicker is they only charge about $300 for that laser surgery. I could not believe the difference in cost between the two. So now Im wondering if I should do the stretching before the surgery or just wait till afterwards. The tmj dr was saying to do it for 5 weeks prior so now I'm curious.

Hi Mandy! Today is Sunday, and I did my tongue tie release this past Friday. I was anticipated my procedure to be much like yours, and other videos that I found on the web. I was trying to educate and mentally prepare myself! But it seems like my oral surgeon went about things a much different way. He used a laser to release the attachment, and then released muscle tension inside of the wound, so my tongue movement would feel more loose and not as restricted. I had stitches put in, that form a "Z". He said he did this in a Z pattern, so my muscles wouldn't shrink up. I have looked up the proper term for this and it's called "Z-frenuloplasty". I have been told that I should start my stretches the day after surgery, and I've done that, but I am still quite swollen, which is causing my speech to be impaired. I have a lisp when I talk because my tongue is so swollen. It's also so tender, and feels so tight, that I can't stick my tongue out yet, and one side of my tongue seems to have gotten movement back before the other side. My husband thinks I'm crazy to worry this much, but I can't help but worry that this lisp will never go away, and that I won't be able to stick my tongue out fully. Does all of this sound normal?

Hi! Im just learning about tongue ties and symptoms and I definitely have one. I also noticed that I have a similiar facial profile as you. Do you know if theres any research on jaw placement and tongue ties? Also, how long does it take to completely heal?

Hi dear, Did you have any speechproblem with tounge tie?
@rbaid1613 жыл бұрын
I did…for years, and one of the reasons why I started looking into tongue ties. When I was a child my speech was so bad that no one could barely understand me…my parents even had me evaluated for mental issues and everything came back normal for me so just left them even more confused.

Hi Mandy, I'm having my release on November 12th. Can you help me understand all of the professionals you sought out to help you prepare or the release and who you saw after your release? Between a chiro, myofacial therapist, and craniofascial therapist. Just a break down of who, when and why would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!! I see it's been over a year for you, how are you doing today?

I also have tongue tie, and haven't released it. My rib is so pain and stiffness and tightness. May be the pain in my rib is because of my tongue tie? I have read about that before.. i hope i can release my tongue tie soon.

I’m wondering what your process with the babies were? I know my family husband daughter and I have tt. I’m pregnant with my second and more than likely she will have one. I’m trying to prepare if they will release it at the hospital

Hi Nina, I had it done 5 days ago and I'm sleeping so much better. I hope it helps you too. Having the mouth exposed open to air changes the Ph of the mouth so I was told by my myofunctional therapist/hygienist.

I came back to see how it was going. I only recently discovered this issue with adult tongue tie - in researching to help my 17 year old son. Thank you for continuing to followup on this. I just need to figure out how to find someone to evaluate him. His dentist never mentioned it but his symptoms are ADD, strong gag reflex and now his upper jaw seems to be growing crooked (among other issues that aren't obvious but I think are likely related - like not talking until he was 3 and reading late). I'm doing a lot of searching on this. Any advice is welcome.

I found out today that my nephew had a release as an infant. I'd totally forgotten. His tie was nearly to the tip. I compared my tongue with my sister's and I was surprised at how much tie I have compared to hers. I'm on a FB group but it is just so much to comprehend. I'll be looking for your updated videos. Thank you for sharing your journey.

Does your speech get better right after the surgery or do you have to have a therapist. My mom can’t afford a therapist if that’s the case

I got my surgery but it reattached. I think I did not have enough mouth roof space to fully rest my tongue in there, so I am working on that now till my next opportunity . I was wondering though if you had your wisdom teeth removed? As I heard that could cause problems, and I definitely had mine removed.

Is being able to 'touch the uvula with the to tongue' a test for tongie-ties? Or just a thing that everyone should be able to do?

I'm getting tongue tie release surgery tomorrow. I know we need to do the exercises for the 2 weeks after when the stitches come out but how much longer after that?
@774748ful2 жыл бұрын
I always do my exercises for a while after the initial healing period. I actually had a little re-attachment months after my first release and I just got my second one done last week. I think it’s a good idea to just do the exercises whenever it feels tight - just to keep that range of motion.
@alanarose45772 жыл бұрын
@@774748ful Thanks! This is super helpful! I got the surgery (at the same time as 2 teeth extractions and a bone graft. 0/10 do not recommend.) I am now 3 weeks out and doing my stretches about once an hour. I really only notice tightness first thing in the morning. I definitively see an increase in mobility from my first week post surgery. :-) (Also it's HILARIOUS to do my stretches while driving and see the faces people make when they notice!)
@pageeric31256 жыл бұрын
I think this would be a problem with my gag reflex, pointing the tongue back to the uvula (never mind touching it), and then stuffing the fingers back there. Your thoughts? Thank you : )

Do you find post-op myofunctional therapy necessary? Although I've been seeing a MFT for pre-op, I feel like I can do the post-op exercises on my own after finding them online. What do you recommend? I really appreciate your videos; they are super helpful. My frenectomy is tomorrow!
@KKKKAAAARRRRYYYYNN5 жыл бұрын
Hi Connie, I've done the pre-op exercises and will probably continue with post op. You certainly can go with the Myofunctional therapist but DO the exercises you find online. Gotta do the stretches and exercises. Looks like we had it done the same day. I had mine done 5 days ago. Yep it hurts. I was listening to Sarah Nissen and her Myofunctional therapist said 2 months is usually the time when patients finally see the most functional results.

Thanks for the response; it helps affirm my decision to cont on w myofunctional therapy. I've noticed those who don't do therapy complain about the pain, whereas those who do use a MFTherapist have a much easier time with it as - I have. The pain was practically non-existent! It's only the stretching that feels like an overworked muscle type of pain along w with some swelling. Otherwise, this has been "a piece of cake"...so glad I did it finally. I will continue stretches for the next 8 weeks. I ate normally, did normal activities and kept on working - no need for any changes. (I'm 57 yrs old!) I highly recommend MFT now that I've been through this - a minimum of 3 pre-sessions and 3 post-sessions. But the exercises learned must cont for 2 months post-lazer. Hope this helps others out there who are wondering like me ...

Thank you for sharing your journey! My ortho and dentist say I have a tongue thrust issue which caused my open bite. They both recommended a tongue crib appliance which I really really don’t want. I’m wondering if this release would help and get straight to the root of the problem. Also, how did you find a health care prof who does this procedure? Thank you!!

I have the same problem as you ( thrust+openbite ) they want me to get the release never talked about what you mentioned so yeah i think the release is enough

Vanessa, I just had mine done today for the same reason (open bite and tongue thrusting issue). My general dentist referred me to an oral surgeon. They did the consult and the procedure on the same day. It was amazingly fast!
