kmonnier lol that is what I was thinking. Holy crap that is a lot of work. In the end though the result is a job properly done and it'll last for many years. I'm thinking he gets paid well for that kind of job.

I notice you are outside wooding the boat, I’ve always been told never have direct sunlight on bare wood. What are your thoughts on this?

one can use a conventional HOT AIR GUN that does not have that massive nozzle on it.. and a Bent burn off tool that looks like something you flip burgers with. but it gets your hands far enough back to keep them from getting toasted by the heat.. just ask the hardware store or paint store clerks for a bent burn off tool. please have a water filled garden sprayer handy.. and don't do this on lap board siding on homes.. the hot air can set the materials behind the lap board on fire and burn the house down hours after you leave.

Louis, after just finding these video's of your work methods and watching a few, I'm going to go out a limb here and say that you might have had a machinist background. I started as a machinist and have been shipwrighting a bit over the last 20 years and have used tools as you, some very dangerous or completely unorthodox in the wrong hands but with care and some sense of the danger, can get the job done quickly and effectively. Have you tried a Roto-Broach yet?

WestCoast tip, Makita Variable Speed Sander, with 8" hard foam 3M or Norton pad, used with 60 grit or 80 grit pre stick sanding disks, as Lou says, keep it moving. The pro,s strip paint with this also.

Dear sir. I have my grandmothers antique cedar robe that my brother painted with commercial boat paint. Can you tell me how I can refurbish back to the cedar. I can’t give it away because it’s been in my family since childhood. I would pay for the knowledge I just can’t let it go. Please help me. Thanks you for your help and May god bless you.

Lou, while you were board sanding I noticed you have some strong 💪 looking arms for an older gentleman. I bet you could put me down with 1 punch.😵‍💫 Thanks for the paint removal tips. I once repainted a classic tollycraft 16 ft runabout. It took a lot of expensive paint remover. It also took a lot of time. My restoration would have been much better if your tips had been available back then. Your heat gun is almost as powerful as a flame thrower. 😆

I was wondering the same thing did you ever get an answer whether just using the planer would work to remove the paint
@southjerseysound7340
@southjerseysound7340 8 жыл бұрын
I've used them to remove paint and while it works it kills the blades and just isnt worth the hassle.I might do it again for a small section or if i had to strip a plank etc but that is it.Truthfully I'd recommend to avoid trying it but as with anything your results may vary.

Just a curious naive person, but why couldn't sandblasting, soda-blasting, or dry ice-blasting work?
@PaulKilpin
@PaulKilpin 8 жыл бұрын
+LittIegator To sandblast any planked boat would damage the plank edges (the seams) which is the most important part of the boat. And that boat is built of a soft wood so it would be badly pitted.
@limnos99
@limnos99 8 жыл бұрын
Soda blasting is very effective and you can set the pressure so it doesn't touch the wood. However, you would need a very expensive commercial grade sized soda blaster to do jobs of this size. I have a smaller consumer grade one, which works great to taking off those small "leftover" areas of paint instead of using the saw blade like was. Far less marks on the wood, in fact, none.

I saw a fibreglass hull the other day with fake planking seams, thought it was funny with wood shipwrights making planking look like it came out of a mould and fibreglass shipwrights making their hulls look like it's uncaulked planking

I think it might help people if you went into a little more detail about what the word "fair", means, when doing this. You are a fine worksman and I am sure you have done a great job but to someone who doesnt know, "fair", could mean many nice things other than the particular thing it describes in the surface of a hull.
@wntu4
@wntu4 7 жыл бұрын
Term: fair (adj) Definition: 1) Referring to the shape of a vessel’s hull, smooth and flawless, with one curve flowing into the next one smoothly and with beauty, having no bumps or bulges or imperfections of line or construction which catch the eye. 2) Having sunshine and moderate winds and seas.

I dont care how good you are with that sander there is no way you can call that surface fair. People will see this and think its OK to use a rotary or orbital sander when its the quickest way to fuck the job up. Not fair.
