Much of our time in grad school involves learning about different aspects of being a therapist: from diagnosis criteria, the history of therapy, research projects, and theories. However, the structure of ongoing therapy sessions is rarely discussed. Many new therapists are left to figure out how to conduct therapy sessions outside of the assessment phase on their own.
In this week’s episode, I discuss a basic structure you can use to format your therapy sessions. I give insight into how I describe this process to clients and share tips for how to manage sessions that seemingly have no clear client objectives.
