Hey, and welcome! In this episode, I’ll be showing you how I sublimate 20 ounce skinny tumblers. I’ve seen a lot of different ways to sublimate tumblers, and this is what I’ve found to be the best way for me to sublimate in order to achieve great results. This video covers the entire process, from printing your image all the way to prepping it for sale!
Not mentioned is the printer I use. It’s a Hamilton Beach XL, and it has been converted to sublimation. I also use Cosmos Ink and TexPrint sublimation paper.
I hope you enjoy, and if this video helped you, please give it a like! And also, be sure to subscribe for more fun and (hopefully) informative videos!
Of note, while I occasionally create unique designs for myself and for my family, I do not sell anything proprietary online…and you shouldn’t either!
If you’re looking for some unique designs, be sure to check out my digital design website. www.industrialfringedesigns.com/

This wasn’t my first tumbler! Keep trying. It’s interesting that what works for some doesn’t work for others. Even with me, I found that very lightly wrapping the top and bottom of my tumbler was best for the oven, but I need to wrap tightly for my tumbler press! Go figure! Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed your tutorial. It’s very true that each tumbler doesn’t come out exactly the same on the tops and bottoms. I have done exact same method on each tumbler and one turns out great and the next might have minor ‘ghosting’ on top or bottom and sometimes both! Luck of the draw I guess lol I thought the idea of adding a QR code was really cool. I also like the care card addition. Thank you again!

Thank you for this step by step video, I’m new to sublimating tumblers so this is very helpful! Can’t wait to try it out! Why do you use the rubber bands on the top and bottom of the tumblers?
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 2 жыл бұрын
You know, Andrea, I struggled with using them. The theory is, they are added pressure on the edges to try and keep good clean sublimated edges. I wasn’t sure they worked when I first started using them, and even stopped for a short while. I ended up thinking they weren’t hurting, and maybe they were keeping the edges sublimated a little better. I’m not 100% sure they’re even needed. If I sub in my oven again, I may or may not use them. I’ve found a much better way to tape the edges, so I’ll probably just tape them well. (I have a video on taping the edges if your interested. That video is for a press, but I’d probably tape the exact same way if I were to use the oven.) I always used a shrink wrap in the oven. There are a lot of folks that use blue painters tape or no wrapping at all. I wasn’t able to get away with no wrapping, and I hated the sticky residue left behind from using blue painters tape. Hope that helps! And thanks for watching!

Thank you for your help. I made my first tumbler tonight, it was a fail. My husband thought I was burning the house down when the smoke detectors started flipping out and going off🙄. Someone else had said to do 400 on my oven for 6 minutes. So not only did I freak out my husband and the dogs I burnt my tumbler, the ink is on but the tumbler is burnt randomly all over, sparkly but burnt. 😢 I will try your way tomorrow.☺️

Karen, you’re not the first person to set off the fire alarms! When I first started, I did the exact same thing, 400 for 6 minutes. It was difficult for me to reduce the time or the temp. It just didn’t seem right. But it was! Whatever you do, if you don’t already have one, get an oven thermometer. The odds are extremely high that your oven runs hot. Almost all of them do. If you have any more challenges, let me know and I’ll see if I can help out. (Better me than the fire department!) Good luck!

Good video I learned how to sublimate thank you. My question is when you put the tumbler without a rack just straight on the oven bottom would it not burn the tumbler since it is direct with the heat bars
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking! My oven doesn’t have that issue for two reasons. First, it’s a convection oven, so the heat is circulated by the internal fans, and on mine, the heating elements are toward the back and front, on the top and bottom. I do have a silicone pad on the bottom of my oven, but that’s in case any shrink wrap melts! Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this video! Very helpful. I noticed that I have to take off the sublimation paper off immediately after taking the tumbler out of the oven or the sub paper sticks to my tumbler? Any recommendations on that?
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 2 жыл бұрын
I take mine off quickly as well, more so to easily get the tape off than the stinking paper, but that’s also a benefit. There are a few reasons paper can stick to the tumbler. Too much heat, too much pressure (if using a press), and sometimes the sublimation coating on the tumbler hasn’t been correctly baked on. I haven’t done this, but I’ve heard if the latter is the issue, you can bake the tumbler for 20 minutes or so with nothing on it, let it cool, then sub as normal. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for your videos! I've been itching to use the tumblers I bought. I loved that you were using a fairly inexpensive oven for these (especially since this one is on sale for on $50) but saw in your paper comparison video you are now using a press for your tumblers. Do you still think you get quality results w/the oven or in your opinion should I hold out & save up for a tumbler press? If you think the oven would suffice, would you still go with the same paper recommendations?
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 Жыл бұрын
Hey, Rachel! I’ll start with the last question! Yes, I still recommend the same papers, regardless of using a press or oven. Now to the often-asked question, oven or press! And oven is more versatile and can sub things a press can’t. I started with just an oven and was fine, and I still have it to be able to use on odd sized things. Now for the press. I absolutely prefer it over the oven, mostly because I’ve created a routine and can make a bunch at once with the press. If you’re doing mostly tumblers, the press is the way to go. Two things. First, look at thrift shops for used ovens. You may be able to pick one up for $10-20, then you can save up and have both! Secondly, if you go with a press, I highly recommend staying away from Amazon and Alibaba, and go with a legit seller. I highly recommend Heat Press Nation, but I almost purchased mine from Pro World. Whatever you do, if you get a press, make sure you buy one where you can buy replacement heating elements! Thanks for watching!

@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 9 ай бұрын
Hey, Cathy! I’m guessing you don’t mean microwave! If so, do NOT use a microwave! Regarding convection and toaster ovens (which I think you’re referring to), only use the oven settings to get you in the general proximity, then adjust those settings based on what your internal thermometer says. Ovens are notoriously off regarding temperature. An inexpensive internal thermometer from Walmart will get you close enough. (And I shoot for 365.) I believe I have a link to one in the description. Make sense? Thanks for watching!

Hi does the toaster have to be convection? Or can you use ordinary toaster oven?
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 2 жыл бұрын
You could probably use a non-convection oven, but you would need to turn the tumbler a couple of times during the bake to distribute the heat evenly. Some people even use an air fryer, so I think as long as you can get the tumbler to the correct temp and evenly baked, you’re okay. The big advantage to a convection oven is the even distribution of heat.

Is it true you need a special printer to sublimate?
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Well, yes, sort of. You either need a special sublimation printer (Sawgrass or Epson sublimation printers) or you need to “convert” a regular printer. Converting is simply completely changing the ink from regular ink to sublimation ink. But here’s the thing. Not all printers will “convert.” It needs to be a printer that uses a piezo print head, as they don’t use heat (and a thermal print head does). That said, printers used to convert are almost exclusively Epson, as most of them use the piezo head. Check out Cosmos Ink on KZbin. He has some great videos on converting and they have great ink. (It’s what I use.)

Shequita, it could be one of a couple of things. You can try reducing you time and/or temp. You can also try switching to a different paper. What time/temp are you currently using, and what paper are you using? Is you paper browning any?

I’m curious. Do you know at what point the sublimation process stops?
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 6 ай бұрын
I’m no scientist, but it’s my understanding the process begins at around 350 degrees, so below 350 would be where you’d see it stop! I’m sure the 350 mark is a little gray, depending on ink brand, temperature, possibly humidity, etc.

Who did you design your website with? It’s nice :)
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! We use Weebly. My wife designs it and I do the tech side. The bulk of the site is my wife’s business. I added a couple of pages for my things. I have a site (INDUSTRIALfringe.com), I just have to put it together, with my wife’s help, of course! Right now I have that web address pointed to the page on my wife’s site. I really like most of Weebly, but the shipping options are not set up as well as they should be, so you have to manipulate things to get shipping charges correct.

Thanks! I’ll let her know! The cool thing about Weebly is, you can start with a free plan, and they have great templates. But I think most of them do nowadays. Thanks again!

You can go to alibaba.com and search Sichuan Locusts Network Technology Co., Ltd. start a chat and let them know you’d like information on tumblers in the USA warehouse. My rep is Chloe Peng. Her email is chloepeng@locusts.net.

I’m sorry, I was responding about the USA unboxing video! Go to the same company. They ship sea or you can get limited products quickly from their USA warehouse for only a little more. (When I think ahead, I buy from overseas. When I miscalculate and need more before my overseas shipment arrives, I order through their USA warehouse! Hope that helps.

Did you print the design on a regular printer and regular printing paper??
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I use an Epson inkjet printer that’s been converted to a sublimation printer by switching out inks (but I hope to buy an actual sublimation printer soon!) and I use TexPrint sublimation paper. There are a bunch of sub papers out there, and some people even use regular (bright white) paper. Thanks for watching!

I know! I laughed when I saw that! I use Photoshop Elements to design and resize everything, and I print from Preview. It’s a Mac pdf viewing program. (I tried to print using the toaster, but it wouldn’t work!) Thanks for watching!

Size of paper? Image size that you printed?
@industrialfringe953
@industrialfringe953 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Tiffany! I used 8.5” x 11” sub paper (either ASub 120 or TexPrint), and the image size was approximately 9-1/4” x 8-1/8”. Since all tumblers can vary in size just a little, I would suggest measuring your tumbler. I have 3 different sizes from the 3 places I’ve purchased tumblers! If you have a software editing program, I cover making a template in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ-upK2vbL5rbK8

You say start to finish but no one actually starts from getting the image, adjusting or perfecting the image to fit your project AND THEN print it out and the rest of it. I'm frustrated with the beginning part and I've yet to find a video to help with that...UGH!

Hey, Lelah, I hear ya! I’m always trying to figure out what most people want, and you’re not the first one that has asked about sizing an image. I do have other videos on creating images, creating templates, sizing the images for print, different taping techniques, etc. I suggest you take a look at some of my other videos to see if you get your answers. If not, let me know and I’ll be happy to work on a video that gets you what you need! Thanks for watching!

Hi, Robert, I currently have the Epson Workforce 7710, “converted” into a sub printer. When I get a new sub printer, I’ll be looking at the Epson F170 or F570. The F570 may be out of my price range, in which case I’ll go with the F170. They’re both made for sublimation, so the probability of problems is much lower! Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
