I've shared some of my basic mug tutorials with you already, but today I'll show you how to sublimate mugs from design, to print, to press! I'll walk you through creating three styles of mug wraps, customizing them, and then using the slice tool in Cricut Design Space to make them the perfect size for your item. I'll share all my tips and tricks from start to finish, using free gorgeous floral designs I created just for you.

@@JenniferMaker it didn’t work. I didn’t loose a mug or paper this time!! Yay. I was trying to use your red roses ring. I got it and added my initial but Cricut Design Space indicated it was too big. So I made it smaller, just to the point where the red alert went off. I then tried to make it but I still kept getting the too big alert. I tried doing a different design. The one that has the cute elephant, first of all I could not change the words to make it my own, so I went back and tried to make it as is. It did the same thing, I kept getting the too big error! I don’t know what to do.

Thank You Jennifer! Another fun project to try 🙂 Update: So I tried the air fryer method because I cannot justify $199 for a machine that does just one thing. I bought an air fryer at the thrift store today for $15.99 (so I can dedicate it only to mugs) and it worked! I actually used a sublimation cup from Michaels, used my infusible ink markers on 24lb copy paper, taped it up good and it worked perfectly! Thank you so much Jennifer for this information. I am totally amazed!

@@JD-72191 I bought a 51/2 quart air fryer. I measured basket, it is 8 1/2 inches so I don’t think a tumbler would fit this size. I know they have larger air fryers. I did purchase silicone wraps after this post, I thought it might help me use less tape….it did not. I do like the silicone wraps…just be sure to use butcher paper between wrapped mug and silicone wrap, or color transfers ( then bled on next cup even using butcher paper). I have made about 20 mugs after this post. So in love with this method, Jennifer is the BEST! PS Did successfully use Infusible ink sheets using the silicone wrap as well, opened up a whole different world! ❤️

All of those mugs are really great! I have a couple of questions, though. Can a toaster oven be used in place of a convection oven? They're a bit too pricey for me. Also, can parchment paper be used instead of butcher paper, or maybe cardstock? Thank you!

It has to be a convection oven, you cannot use a regular toaster oven, unfortunately. Parchment paper has a coating that holds the moisture in, which is not good for sublimation. Butcher paper does not have a coating so it can absorb the moisture.

@jennifermaker can I use the cricut infusible ink butcher paper with sublimation and if so what side should be pressed against the Asub paper? The glossy side or smooth side? And with the other side of the butcher paper ruin the mug press plates? PLEASE PLEASE ADVISE! First time doing actual Sublimation

Yes, you can use Cricut Infusible Ink butcher paper with sublimation. Infusible ink is sublimation. When using butcher paper, you should place the smooth side against the Asub paper. The glossy side should face away from the design. This will help ensure a clean transfer without any issues. As for the other side of the butcher paper, it should not ruin the mug press plates. Butcher paper is designed to withstand the heat and protect your equipment, so you should be safe using it in your mug press.

The heat wraps that you use say not to use them in temps above 338 yet you are sublimating at 400 in an oven. Do they not melt on you? Mine melted at 385 (using Maker brand from Michaels which allows up to 356).

When using an air fryer, is it better not to rotate it half way through since there isn’t a way not to touch the sides of the mug or tumbler as it will be laying on its side? I notice people have to lay their tumblers on their sides if using a regular convection oven that isn’t super tall. Thank you.

It would have to be a darker color. For instance, you can draw on a lighter infusible ink sheet with a dark Infusible Ink pen.

Yes, you can sublimate in an air fryer. Once you do they are no longer food safe.

Hi Jennifer. I had a client reach out to me recently. They informed me the sublimation mugs they purchased from me the image has started to fade. They purchased them about 1.5 years ago. I used cricut mugs and cricut infusisble ink. They did mentioned they put them in the dishwasher. Was I was supposed to seal the mugs? Or what would have caused them to fade.

While sublimation designed to be dishwasher safe, repeated exposure to high heat and harsh detergents over time can potentially cause some fading. This is especially true if the dishwasher settings are particularly high or if the detergent is very strong. Sublimation prints are generally durable, but like any printed material, they can degrade over time with frequent use and washing. The fading after 1.5 years, especially with regular dishwasher use, is not entirely unexpected. It might be helpful to provide your clients with care instructions to hand wash the mugs or set the dishwasher to air dry at the very least to extend the life of the design. While the mugs are dishwasher safe, hand washing can help maintain the vibrancy of the sublimation ink for a longer period.
