Bryce, I am in the middle of creating a functional description for a large project. The spec that I am writing it from has very little info in regards to how they want it to run (major pointers only) We as a BMS company have to write this up based on the information that we have. If there is little guidance in that spec then we just waste considerable time resubmitting FD’s until we get it right which should have been explained in the first place. There has to be an answer to this problem as we all know time is money and this procedure waists a lot of it. If we were doing a system for a nuclear power plant then you would think there would be a detailed description of how it has to work ! HVAC is no different.

Sorry Dave, I haven’t been on KZbin for a few months. I just uploaded a video and realised there are a bunch of comments in here. I'd suggest you arrange a workshop with the mech consultant before you start. Go there and talk to them, explain that you need to start the design but there isn't much in the spec and that you need some direction. Be cool about it. The mech consultant will realise they haven't given you enough detail, they will probably feel bad about it. They probably felt guilty when they issued the spec knowing it was not complete. Often the problem is that the mech consultant does not know how to control the system. Tell them you will fill in the gaps, you just need to understand the mechanical intent. You will get respect for tackling the issue like this and will get an opportunity to build up some report with the consultant, which will help you later.

Bryce, exactly how I feel. Forces the contractor to think. And most of the time it's pretty obvious the problem is on the drawing. I.e. missing info or system architecture doesn't make sense.

Really interesting. When I get a generic temperature sensor submission. I status A with a list of the highest specification highlighted as my assumption that that is what is being offered.

Lol, that is the sarcasm I was talking about. Like a little punishment for being lazy :-)
