Guys, she's so right, I can't stress how important building relationships with your teachers is. I studied biology (where I am from, the system is not the same, we call it Sciences of life and Earth) for a year than choose Ecology and Environmental sciences. Even if our work is 50% being outside and 50% working in the lab, it is still super important to get in touch with your teachers as their work and researches will give you the most valuable information, techniques and many ideas. Volunteer in any organization related to your field within campus, sign up for scientific clubs and student unions. Seriously, you'll meet many people and create a network of valuable relationships for yourself. You'll have information on what's up in your fields, what jobs are available, any opportunity. Also, learn statistics (and by that I mean software like R) I didn't know that biology would require so much statistics and I neglected it for a long time until I reached my 3rd year and realized I was late. I do encourage you to research what software or skills are required in your future classes and becoming familiar with them over the summer/vacation. Finally, Make the most out of what is available at campus (Library, Gym, ..etc) Good luck!

Such great advice, especially about connections! Mentors are so important. Not only for career gain, but forming relationships and connections with people with similar interests will greatly strengthen your love for your studies. I would have never known how much I loved chemistry if it weren't for my professors/mentors.

I got inspired by you last summer after being introduced to your videos through the Jaclyn Hill drama (😅). I was/am on a gap year looking for the right thing to study and having no idea where I want to be headed. Loving what I saw on your channel, I decided to apply to study Biochemistry in Scotland; I’m now headed to Glasgow this fall to pursue this! I always knew I loved science, but I only figured out this is something I wanted after I found out about everything that Biochem encompasses through your channel, so thank you! 🥰

Kenna, thanks so much for doing this video - I really wish I had this advice when I took biochemistry at UW 20+ years ago. it really was the most difficult four years of my life. people need to understand that - it really is THE WORST, but it's only for the four years. your advice is fantastic and I know you're inspiring a lot of younger ladies to take careers in stem. I wish I had the foresight to start my own company when I was younger. I know you are using this opportunity to figure out what the demand is in skin care and beauty so you can start up another company again. I am excited to stand up behind you in the future. I worked in qa, qc, regulatory affairs, and R&D after working in a lab and I truly wish I started my own brand in lower cost and attainable skin care. I feel like you're going to have a lot of job applications coming from yt! 😊 I am excited to see what happens next!!!

I'm a Pharmacy Bsc student and there is a variety of courses including inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry (2nd year). Do you have any advice on how to tackle those subjects? I'm definitely a genetics, molecular biology, organic chemistry, botany, pharmacology kind of gal, but those two kill me. Maybe some course books, specific authors or research papers to follow? Thank you so much, Kenna! Please continue doing videos related to university, career, research, lab work and so on!
@everybodylovesducksauce71584 жыл бұрын
it's all about trying to find real world applications to make it stick. these courses are HEAVY and 'weed out' students. look at how their application could be applied to drugs etc. Phys chem is difficult and its a lot of formulae. with inorganic, look at the practical application of it. go to as many tutorials and visit the profs. best of luck, I really wish I had an inspiration like her when I was in school. keep thinking about the end goal and work really hard. this is the worst four years of your life. I promise you. (honours biochemistry at university of Waterloo!!!). I still wear UW sweatshirts 20+ years later because it really was the hardest part of my life! 💕

@millendoan56414 жыл бұрын
Olaplex has patented 2 ingredients in their formula that was discovered by two UCSB chemists. Their research showed that those ingredients were able to repair disulphide bonds in the hair therefore repairing your hair. Obviously I’m oversimplifying it but there’s a reason why it’s so expensive. Their tech is patented and other companies can’t use those 2 ingredients in the US (L’Oréal actually got sued for it).

Hi Kenna, could you do a video on how to start searching for/finding a job in your field after graduation? I graduated with a degree in neuroscience from UofT this June and I'm really stuck. Any help would be appreciated 😊
@rebeccaalovesya4 жыл бұрын
I graduated from neuroscience at UWindsor 3 years ago! While I went on to pursue a Master's degree in Human Kinetics, what I will say from experience is that you can likely get a job as a research assistant fresh out of university (especially if you live in/around Toronto where a lot of the research hospitals are). There are actually quite a bit of job listings currently for RAs that I've seen so I would do a search for research assistant positions and check which ones you have the experience for. Many of them you may not have the required skills for, but it will give you an idea of what kind of experience you might need to get for a specific job you want. Another thing I didn't do until I was a post-grad is create a CV, so if you haven't already, I would work on that to use to apply to jobs. Then just tailor your CV to fit any jobs you're applying for (if needed) and ALWAYS write a cover letter, since there's your opportunity to convince the employer of why you're a good fit for a job. After I finished my undergrad degree, I felt really lost as to what kinds of jobs were out there and my university's program did a really good job of pushing you into academia rather than jobs outside.. so I definitely understand how you're feeling right now. Hopefully my tips can help you with your job search and if you ever want to chat about post-grad life, I'd be happy to talk on IG 😊 @rebecca__reagan Good luck!

I might have a reading problem, i've had issues like this when i was young but never diagnosed. Is there any way i can improve on understanding what i read? I'm really good at math so i think just comprehension is what my issue is. ANY advice would be helpful because I really want a degree in BioChem and I want to actually learn and understand.
