A few tips: - Wrap some duct tape around an old pen tube cut to length. It saves a ton of space and you can slip some cord through the tube to tie to something, use it as a keychain.. whatever. Super useful. - You can make easy waterproof matches by coating them in wax, even a normal candle will do. Just scrape a bit of wax off and strike. You can also take some cotton balls and soak them in wax to make some waterproof fire starters while you're at it. Double points if you use a citronella candle, because it will ward off bugs in the wild when you actually need them. (Just take the cotton balls, quick dip in melted wax, and shape it into sticks or something while it cools.) - Those flint strikers are actually magnesium. They work in a different way than most people assume. You CAN strike them and make a big spark, but you can also slowly scrape a pile of dust/shavings off of it and then strike the spark at that pile. The magnesium will ignite incredibly hot and burn even damp materials. - You can use bleach for a few things, but most of all you can disinfect water with it. About 5 drops of *plain normal bleach* (no color safe, scents or anything like that. Just pure bleach solution.) to a gallon of water, shake well and let it sit for an hour or so. Leave the jug open for another 15-30 minutes to allow any excess fumes to escape and it's safe to drink. 1-2 drops to a liter, 5-6 drops to a gallon. No more. It's perfectly safe. - For anything you pack with batteries in it, add a sliver of paper or plastic between the battery contacts, kinda like when you buy a new toy or something. Storing something with the batteries connected for a long time can cause the batteries to rupture and leak or corrode and destroy your device. Just put the batteries in your flashlight or radio, add a slip of paper and close it up, maybe leave a bit of string or paper hanging out so you remember to remove it when you need it. Hopefully these help someone out. Good luck, stay safe and never trust blindly! Do your own research! References: - Bleach disinfecting water, EPA guidelines: www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/emergency-disinfection-drinking-water - Easy wax firestarters: compareoutdoorgear.com/fire-starter/ Ferro Rod use: gearjunkie.com/camping/magnesium-ferrocerium-fire-starter
@pepesylvia8483 жыл бұрын
Those flint strikers are actually ferrocerrium(sp) rods. They're often attached to magnesium, but the fire steel itself is not what you can scrape to get a good pile of metal that will ignite easily. You're not going to scrape up a pile of unburnt shavings from that rod, and you're not going to get magnesium to ignite by merely shaving it. That's why ferro rods are often sold glued to blocks of magnesium. They do different things.

Make sure everything can be opened with one hand or one hand and teeth (DAMHIK). Multiple plastic bags can be used to save severed fingers or other parts - part goes in sealed dry bag, that goes in another bag which has cold water and ice if available.

One really good thing about Dr. Z's choice of bag is that it's nondescript, it's a really simple black bag that doesn't stand out. When I chose a backpack for my but out bag I made sure to buy a simple but well built non-tactical looking pack because in a SHTF situation it pays to be a grey man. Nowadays most people in the West are city dwellers so in a situation where there's a mass of people involved it pays to blend in.

Just when Dr. Zarka couldn't be any cooler, she gets cooler! Great go-bag, Doctor Emily! One thing you might add since you're in an urban area is a silcock wrench. It's relatively small and light and very inexpensive and will open water valves you may find on many buildings. It's not necessarily legal to use without permission but it's legal to own and in an emergency it's better to ask forgiveness than permission. ;-)

Ummmm check the expiration date on your Diphenydramine maybe. Just looking out. Lol
@littlegoobie4 жыл бұрын
although checking the dates is a good idea, a study done by the military, i think, concluded that most meds are still good long after the expiry but some might not be as potent. For the most part, grocery store and pharmacy items have an expiry date only because the law requires them to have one. I've had sour cream and yogurts 6 months after the expiry. It's already spoiled, right. some brands of yogurt are made from starters that they've had for 100 years.

I give your kit an 7.5/10. Excellent points on the deck of cards for entertainment, and I love the mention of practicing with your kit so you can use it when the goings get rough. Plus you included some of the basics many people forget like paper and pens for information gathering, and gloves. Omg, gloves are key. Some recommendations are more situation specific, like if this travels with you in your car, you may already have your state Maps, but if it is your home bag, I'd suggest some local, state, and country wide maps. We'll worth their weight. Your Firestarters are pretty spot on, but I'd suggest something that can hold a flame like some candles, or a lighter so that you can transport the flame easier, or keep it lit through adverse conditions where a full pit isn't possible. And lastly, on your food, and especially your water. While I understand not wanting to weigh the kit down with water, I'd suggest either A some sort of mess kit to boil water and a canteen to keep it in, B some other sort of Water bottle, either metal (and fun fact, if you want to save space, a smaller metallic bottle will fit in the hole of the roll of ductape) some sort of Nalgene collapsible bottle, or C possibly just one or two sealed bottles of water in a recyclable polymer bottle, if need be, you can even boil water in a plastic bottle if you are careful enough. Water should be on your top 3 priorities, and having way to keep some on you in a manner that can be tightly sealed is key! You can certainly improvise a water bottle using some of the packaging used, such as on the lifestraw, but I guarantee that it will be more awkward and messy to access than just rolling up a bag with a proper valve, seal and an expansion gusset so it can stand up. I don't say this as an expert of course, I'm just a nerd who likes to lick rocks, and my bug out kit is in disarray, because I keep using parts of it like my multitool on the reg, and my Hatchet and Tarp when I go camping. But I'm happy you are brining Emergency Preparedness to an audience that otherwise might miss it. Thanks so much for sharing this video topic! *edit, also some sort of Holy Symbol in case they are those kind of undead. Possibly see if you can slip in some silver there for similar, and also barter based reasons.

Great vid! Thanks for showing that you don't have to be a kook to want to be prepared for the unexpected. I would recommend adding some cordage to your kit. 100' or so of 550 para-cord doesn't take up a lot of space, and can be incredibly helpful. Yes, you could make some cordage out of your duct tape, but why not bring along some that's already made.

@nicholassilva1404 жыл бұрын
You should mention how heavy that pack is. Especially with books, and some of the redundancies, like a can opener after a multitool. The weight of the pack is a crucial element in survival.

good point i thought about while watching many survival videos. the weight can take a giant toll on someone when walking even a short distance if they are no used to it.

Took a mythology class last year. The Hindu cycle talks about the age of Kali, in which 'all kings occupying the earth in the Kali Age will be wanting in tranquility, strong in anger, taking pleasure at all times in lying and dishonesty... prone to take the paltry possessions of others. . . . . They will be short-lived, ambitious, of little virtue and greedy People will follow the customs of others and be adulterated with them; peculiar, undisciplined barbarians will be vigorously supported by the rulers'. I'm not a believer in anything, but I do love LOVE folklore and mythology and I got this weird deja vu feeling from reading that excerpt about the age of Kali.

Well, Doc, I will say I'm a little surprised and greatly impressed! You covered the basics very well, IMHO. I also thought it important that you have a few comfort items in your kit as well. There is surviving and there is thriving. I suggest watching a few of the better bushcraft channels for some great ideas and good reviews. Corporal's Corner (Shawn Kelly) is one of the best. While many might think of bushcraft as "just camping," it's really more about preparedness than camping. The skills are important. You need plenty of cordage in that kit of yours, by the way. A tarp would also be a useful addition, although you could press the mylar blanket into service if necessary.

With how horror movies influence how we think: I remember I was once going to visit my friend on the 4th floor of a block of flats. The lift was old and this particular night the lights in it were flickering in a way that was...ominous. After very nearly taking the stairs I thought to myself "Don't be stupid" and took the lift. Halfway up the lights just outright failed for a good ten seconds and my first thought was "I'm going to die, and I deserve it - I'm literally that guy you see in a horror film where you're screaming 'Why would you get into the creepy af murder lift you moron?!' as they dismiss the several clear indicators that they're not safe". The lights came back on and I got to the 4th floor without any incident or supernatural warning signs, but the next time the lights were flickering I took the stairs - I refuse be that guy who miraculously escapes notice the first time and then decides to wander back in wearing a "murder me" sign.

A few things missing from that list; Soap (!!) a decent (folding) saw a light axe (if there’s still room and the added weight is not an issue) something to sharpen that knife with (being dull sort of defeats the purpose of a knife) emergency tinder (birch bark works fine) for your firestarter a cooking pot or fire-resistant mug of some kind fishing line + hooks a sewing needle cordage (+ the knowledge of how to make more if you need it) Depending on your climate and desired comfort-level, a decent sleeping bag, sleeping mat and/or hammock might be advisable, but those (esp. the sleeping bag) are the things that really take up a lot of space, so it depends on how big a pack you want.

I always find it funny that people try to stach foods first: we can get around without food for nearly a month…but without water something around 7 days. In case of a zombie attack the public water supply will surely break down quickly but definitely after the electricity breaks down…so you should stack water in bottles first and food after 😁

I have to disagree with your inclusion of expired meds. You can't rely on them to still have the proper dose of medication, and can be worse than useless. I would suggest occasionally checking on the stuff in your go bag, and replacing anything that has expired. My qualification to say this: I did a single research project with a pharmaceutical company on how to best formulate one of their drugs, and in the process learned what they base their expiration dates on. Yes, they are very conservative with their estimates and give themselves a margin of error, but it is not entirely conjured out of thin air to scare you into buying more. You've got wiggle room equivalent to about 10% of the original estimated shelf life (if the manufacture date and the expiration date are 5 years apart, you can go past by a few months and be fine, but if they are a month apart you can only go past by a couple of days).

Watching this was a bit scary, frankly. Max Brooks' books are incredible pieces of sociology, public health, etc. I definitely appreciate this go bag. Glad that I have many of the things Dr. Zarka listed. Also, there is that sense of the sublime of experiencing terror, almost like the theory of why children have nightmares of being chased or whatever. It gives us a sense of practice. The problem, of course, is that our "wild west gunslinger" style of fiction makes us all think that we are action stars who can go and save the day, when we cannot.

It's a common conversation amongst us veterinary technicians, as to how awesome we would be in a zombie apocalypse. Technicians, not the doctors. We can wrestle dogs twice our size, with snapping teeth, and not get bit. We can definitely hold our own in physical combat against a deadite and not get bit. To be successful in vet med, ingenuity is a must. We know enough about surgery to stitch someone up if needed. We know our sedatives and we are pros with a rabies pole.
