How To Swap A JL Rubicon Rear Axle - Part 1. On this video we start the process of swapping a JL Rubicon rear axle into my 2018 Wrangler Sport S. My Jeep came with the max tow m220 (Dana 44) that has a limited slip differential. Upgrading to the Rubicon rear axle will gain us an electronic locker, bigger brakes, and 1.5” more width. We decided to upgrade a few things while we’re at it. We welded an Artec rear truss on the axle as well as upgraded the brakes and axle shafts. We went with brakes from Power Stop and chromoly shafts from Spicer Parts, this should make a pretty solid setup for the wheeling I do here in the Pacific Northwest! You'll be happy with that set up and you'll also be good to go to 38X13.50X17 with 4.88 (or 5:13). I have that on mine as seen on my channel jeepNdirt and I think it's the best all around combo for our JLU's. As you noted, the rubi axles are wider, bigger brakes, come with lockers and are just fine with axle shaft upgrades even with the FAD up front. Admittedly I no longer have the M210 up front as I now have the spicer Ultimate 44 up front but that's because a minor accident (someone else fault) forced an axle upgrade due to the parts shortage issues where the shop couldn't source a stock M210 from the factory. Luckily they found one UD44 with 4.88's at a 4 wheel parts shop in the US and ordered it right away. But to be honest I would have kept my M210 and simply installed a set of the RCV FAD axle shafts up front and called it done. Given that it took a 4500 lb lexus traveling at 46 mph slamming into my driver side wheel and breaking the knuckle and bending the FAD end of the tube just under 1/8th of an inch, I'd say the stock M210 axle is actually pretty strong lol. Good stuff man.

Thanks for watching man, I agree that this setup should be great for the 38” tire size and I may go slightly bigger we’ll see. That’s too bad you wrecked your Jeep but I guess getting the upgraded axle is a plus. I am planning on getting the 3 piece RCV’s down the road, thanks for the info!

Are those brakes any better than the sport. I have done the same swap except gears which is going to be done this summer. I don’t want to drop 2500 on teraflex brakes if I don’t need to.

@@jasonnash7323 I did a lot of mods all at once but I definitely feel like it stops a good 10 feet shorter than it did. I don’t know how much of that is the 5.13’s down shifting or the brakes but I do know when I did the front it made a big difference! @@jasonnash7323 Agree brakes are definitely better. Also don't forget our jeeps have that automatic panic boost thing where it measures how fast you come off the gas and boost brake pressure immediately. It's a wonderful thing.
