Thanks! I have a 85 Monte sport coupe in the garage that has been waiting on body mounts for the last couple years, and that car has a 5.3 longblock from an express van sitting inside a shopping cart next to it. This video made me a little more confident that i'll be able to do the swap instead of dropping a 350 in. I'm also almost finished swapping a square body suburban minus torque converter. One thing you could add to this is with the gas tank from a fuel injected G body with the 4.3, you can replace the electric fuel pump in that tank with the AC delco EP381 for cheap and not have to worry about an external one and it will put out enough pressure to feed the LS if you keep the stock fuel injection
@jacobdavis19797 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the view. And thank you for the input. When I originally made this video about 2 years ago I had originally planned to do both a tutorial on carb and fuel injection. I even had alot of the editing done to do so. The reason I cut fuel injection out of the video is because along with this video being a "How to" I also wanted it to be a summary of my Malibu project. So then I had a whole video "How to" of my 88 Stepside planned out and half way edited. It was going to be the video where I went into full detail of LS Fuel injection. That video never got completed because I had HUGE viewer request to run the Fitech TBI unit on the 5.3. So that video got cut as well. Maybe I'll return to the subject one day. But back in 2013 to 2014 info was still limited. Where as today in 2017 all the information is a click away. But I still may return to the subject at some point. Right now I mainly just Vlog projects.

@hauntedhousestudio4 жыл бұрын
Just saw this video. Really good. If you can tell me about fuel regulator pressure, it would help me finish my project. I am 90-95% finished with my 6.0 LS swap in a c4 corvette. Got all the adapters connected, engine mounted and trans connected with adapter ring. Got the 6014 mds box hooked up. Put a resister wire to alternater. Now I made a t post for the fuel line One for send, another for return and last to Mr. Gasket fuel regulator. That line feeds into a fuel psi gauge into the Holley quick fuel 750 carb with an Edlebrock manifold. (Don't mean to make this so long) Since it is a 6.0 I had to install a bigger charged battery and a 6 psi electric fuel pump for it. NOW FOR THE PROBLEM: It cranks strong and actually starts but too strong. The engine revs as if the throttle pedal is on the floor and the back wheels start to spin on park then shuts off cause it used up the fuel in carb resv. I have put the back wheels on jack stands and tried lowering the regulator to a 4 psi but still too much power then shut off. Needs to run between 6-7psi. Any advice, opinions, on this would help. Thanks.

Can you use that same stand alone Ecu for an Ly6 with Ac and fuel injection?
@jacobdavis19796 жыл бұрын
Michael Cimino MSD 6010/12/14 is for ignition only. If you want to use it with fuel injection you'll need Efi that does fuel only. Which will work, but that's an expensive way of going about it. Plus you would have 2 ecus and 2 harnesses to deal with. I don't recommend it. Since you're 58x with an LY6 I recommend either an E38 ecu, MS3 Pro, Holley HP/Dominator or even a PO1 411 with a 58 to 24x conversion module.

I would say definitely. Especially if you're going carbed. Going injected, I imagine you probably still could with some kind of in-line pump. Maybe someone sells a kit to utilize factory tank with a drop in electronic fuel pump?
@jeraldwingerter31278 жыл бұрын
Jak, I have quite a few people telling me that the demon 750 is too much for my setup.. Ive read and read and read but 750 cfm seems to be pretty common on ls engines. Im running a 6.0 lq4 motor with a comp xer287 cam (238/240 duration at .050, 605/609 lift, and 112 lsa) and stock 243 heads.. Contemplating buying a new, smaller cfm carb, but I was kinda wanting to hear about how yours worked out since our builds are very similar. Don't wanna spend money on that that could be allocated elsewhere. Thanks! -Jerry
@jacobdavis19798 жыл бұрын
I believe alot of people say a 750 is too much due to the fact everyone is used to working on SBCs and SBFs. The volumetric efficiency of an LS is a tad bit different than the older engines. Typically the way to gauge CFM thats needed is by engine vacuum. Holley states their carbs work best at just tad under atmospheric pressure at WOT so fuel atomization is still at play. So if you're running lets say a 650 carb and you're running 5 psi of vacuum at WOT the carb is too small. This works vice versa also. If you're running a 750 carb and at half throttle you're at atmospheric pressure. Then the carb is too large. 750 should be about correct. And if you find then engine is running to rich, just swap jets until you get you're desired AFR. Wooooh. That was a long winded comment sorry about that lol.

Do you use inline fuel pump or can you possibly modify stock if it's intake pump? Thanks for sharing! That engine is NICE!
@jacobdavis19797 жыл бұрын
Dime Fever Thank you. Assuming you're working on a Gbody also, many people have swapped the tank and sending unit for any 87 Gbody that had a pump from the factory. You can use the factory in tank pump for a carb with a bypass style regulator, or swap the pump out for example a Walbro 255 for fuel injection.

Thanks for the vid it answered a lot of questions I had. I just got a hold of a stock 6.0 and full wiring harness and cpu with 89k on it. Going to put it into my 85 Monte Carlo want to keep it fuel injected tho', will the MSD take care of the VAT issue too ? And I've heard something about needing a new gas pedal if you're staying injected, is this true.
@jacobdavis19797 жыл бұрын
Gregory Green If you're going fuel injected you don't need the MSD box at all. And if your engine is 24x you can run a 0411 pcm with a DBC throttle body. If you're running a DBW yes you will need the matching gas pedal.
@BigDaddyG687 жыл бұрын
Sorry for my stupidness but I'm new to the LS game, but when you say 24x are you referring to the reluctor wheel? And i'm assuming that the 58 would be DBW.
@jacobdavis19797 жыл бұрын
Gregory Green yes. The early LS engines had a 24x crank reluctor. Later models had a 58x reluctor. Usually 24x engines have a black crank sensor. 58x have a gray one.

im,still a little confused about motor mounts and the spacer for flywheel?
@jacobdavis19796 жыл бұрын
Justin Page The 1 inch set back plates move the LS engine into the exact position a 350 or other SBC would sit into the engine bay. So you can keep the transmission and cross member in the factory location. This also allows you to keep the factory length drive shaft. The spacer is strictly for using an older style transmission like the TH350, 400, 700, etc behind an LS since the crankshaft is .400 shorter than an SBC.

Yes. The modulator valve just needs a clean full vacuum source.

What headers do you recommend in a ls 5.7 in a 88 monte carlo ss
@jacobdavis19799 жыл бұрын
The S10 LS swap headers should fit perfectly with no modification. If you want long tubes F body will work but the driver side collector has to be cut and welded on straight instead of an angle

@jacobdavis19795 жыл бұрын
Andrew Hewitt This is actually a 79 Malibu. Yes there are tons of kits available on the market for G body. At the time this video was made the market for G body LS swaps was very limited. Today we have parts galore.

Yes it will work just the same as in this video. As mentioned in the video you will need to get the flex plate adapter for your transmission so the converter doesn't pull out of the transmission to far.

How can I do fuel injection with my stock gas tank I need some info on how to do so
@jacobdavis19799 жыл бұрын
With Stock tank?? What car you have? Only way to use a carb fuel tank is to sump it and run an inline pump. Personally id run an 87 tank like a grand national or Monte Carlo and use a higher flow pump like Walbro 255

@jacobdavis19799 жыл бұрын
+Alexis Samarripas An Elco. Not sure of any Oem efi tanks that will swap out. Unless an 87 El Camino was injected not sure. Best bet might be to sump the stock tank
@alexissamarripas41789 жыл бұрын
Malibu Jak OK so sumo the tank and then do what to the fuel pump on it it'll have a hole
@jacobdavis19799 жыл бұрын
+Alexis Samarripas Not sure I follow. The fuel pump will be inline and gravity fed. And just leave the factory sending unit in place

how much did that conversion cost I have fuel injection but damn computer keeps going out that's why I want to go Carb
@jacobdavis19798 жыл бұрын
The computer keeps going out? Harness issue possibly. But a carb conversion was $250 for the intake, $350 for the MSD box, and the carb of your choice. On this build I used the 750 Street Demon. Ran about $320 I believe.

hi buddy I'm hi buddy I'm working on a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme original 307 Olds I am looking to I am looking to go to an LS1 or a larger motor like the six liter and I would like to stay fuel injected as possible can you please point me in the right direction that what I would have to do to do this work? I have grown up around Corporation and the typical early Generations carbureted blocks me and my dad have never done an LS swap because we were afraid of getting it running as far as the computers and getting the fuel injection system to work so any information to lead me in the right direction I would appreciate. Your video was very helpful
@jacobdavis19798 жыл бұрын
Swap your intank pump to a Walbro 255. Get some good quality Fuel injection hose and Efi clamps not worm clamps. You need a Pcm with Vats removed so it can start. Check out a website called PSI Conversions. They have very simple to use Plug n Play wiring harness for the LS engine and you can purchase PCM with Vats removed from them also. The engines are very simple just be sure to do some research so things go well :)

No. But if you want A/C alot of companies on ebay make brackets. Since the stock LS compressor wont clear the mounts and frame.

what did the whole swAp cost you?
@jacobdavis19797 жыл бұрын
I had about $3000 in this one. But that's including the cam, springs, and stall converter. If I had left the engine stock I could've easily done it for $1800
@lanelamartiniere68077 жыл бұрын
i know its been a while but do you remember what valve springs you used. By the way keep up the good work.
@jacobdavis19797 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) My Malibu I used Blue LS6 springs. It's best to get the correct springs for your cam of choice though.
@lanelamartiniere68077 жыл бұрын
Well I'm building an 84 cutlass and really like the way your g body has turned out. Do you recommend the cam you used and if so what model cam was it.
@jacobdavis19797 жыл бұрын
The cam I used in this build was called the Edelbrock 2215 I believe. It's been a few years so my numbers could be rusty. It sounds good, and has a great torque curve. Felt good with the 2800 stall converter I used. They also have a 2216 model that's alittle hotter than this one. It's a great cam for the price I paid. It was a black Friday deal I got for like $200.

Jonathan Clark No problem. I understand that my response made me sound a little bit like a smart ass and for that I apologize. But this video should apply to most G bodies. If you're wanting fuel injection, a fuel tank from an 87 Monte Carlo with an aftermarket pump should work wonderfully.

i have to ask the obvious..is all this worth the trouble?? its still just a 327...a very strrong 327,yes..but ive had numerous 350/383/400 @ 750-800 Hp that lived long lives. Sure their cheap ..
@jacobdavis19798 жыл бұрын
I sincerely apologize not sure why i had to approve your comment. But is it worth it Yes. And when it comes to displacement you cant make a comparison between an LS and an SBC. 2 completely different animals. 6 Bolt main bottom end, 9.5:1 compression out of the box, heads that flow just as well if not BETTER than an aftermarket SBC head, the way the cam is positioned in the block allows for larger and better grinds than SBC cams, the way coolant flows in the block can allow for better compression ratios on pump gas. The list goes on. GM did nothing but improve on everything over the SBC. Basically if you find a junkyard 5.3 you are a cam swap away from 400 flywheel HP.
