I'm 72 and a salty pool just opened next to my house. I always wanted to learn butterfly and like everything else I always use youtube to improve myself! The butterfly is difficult and exhausting; however, I'm determined to get it eventually. Luckily my body is still flexible and my arms are strong so I do have the necessary tools to achieve my goal, I hope.

@LaFanfanTulipe3 жыл бұрын
@@MicahandModesta The first week of my trying the butterfly, I started to have pains in my left shoulder. I waited a week for the pain to subside. I learned that the cause of my pain could come from a poor technique. (I was pushing the water as soon as my arms came out of the water instead of waiting for them to get together and then push the water under me.) This did help me to perform the ABC butterfly, without any pain. However, according to my daughter, my butterfly looks awful, more like a toad dying in the water (sic) while my son (probably polite) thought my butterfly is fine. In spite of all criticisms, I decided to keep on doing the butterfly, just because I love the way it feels physically, more than any other strokes. Perhaps I don't have enough strength to get my head out of the water, but I do have the flexibility. Thanks for asking my experiences regarding the butterfly. I wish I had tried this stroke when I was young, but I was too busy--only retirement gave me the opportunity to swim at whim. :-)
@LaFanfanTulipe3 жыл бұрын
@@MicahandModesta Yesterday, I started to understand exactly how to the butterfly for which I'm proud. When I was walking with my daughter, she noticed my back was bumpy! I asked her if it was the neck, which would have been a bad sign. She told me no, it was the blades of my shoulders. I immediately realized that swimming did reinforce the shoulder-blade muscles; the same as it does to most professional swimmers. When I was a teenager, I studied trapeze in the Cirque d'Hiver in Paris. My husband used to tell me that my back looked like a young boy doing lots of sport. Perhaps my back muscles are going back to their yesteryear. :-)

@@LaFanfanTulipe so happy for you maya! My grandfather taught me how to swim backstroke when he was 65 (I was 6 at the time) so it's never too late to learn. Butterfly is a majestic stroke and the most elegant out of all. I used to be a competitive butterfly swimmer in high school and it was actually the last stroke that I learned since I was reluctant to, due to the sheer difficulty and my bad experience with it (I had been swimming for well over 8 years at that point with many half-hearted, failed attempts at butterfly). In my opinion, the kick is an overlooked aspect of butterfly and if you learn how to do it correctly, you can greatly increase your speed and reduce the energy you spend while doing it as it helps to improve balance too. Wish you good luck with your swimming endeavours!

1. Always maintain horizontal position. 2. Try not to dive too deep. Stay on surface 3. The movement you do with your hands is dragging yourself ahead through the water. Concentrate on this movement. 4. Stick feet together. Dolphin kick is a must. With a time you will dolphine kick intuitively. 5. When you get your face up you slow down, so inhale on every 2-nd or 3-d stroke. In this video the swimmer breathes on every stroke. That's exhausting.

I think breaststroke is the most difficult. I still remember I took a long time to master butterfly. The most difficult part is the timing and how smooth is the undulation movement. Undulation movement starts from the head to the bottom (not just dolphin kick). The rhythm of the undulation movement really takes time to do it right. In breaststroke, there are similarities with butterfly, once the hand is finished in breaststroke, the hip actually slightly floats. The hips floats up also in butterfly. Breaststroke hands are very difficult to do it right, it might be more exhausting to swim than butterfly. One of the drill I used in breaststroke is actually breaststroke hands and butterfly legs

If you guys could create a video focused more on timing of the kick rather than the mechanics, that would be awesome. Timing (when to use the kick) is what everyone gets stuck on learning and it’s important to maintain momentum. Also the kick is used to help drive the body forward not necessarily to get the body out of the water. The arms naturally carry the upper body more than the legs do. The kick drives the body forward as we pull out of the water and the second kick drives the body forward as our arms re-enter the water.

Are your abs suppose to be sore?! I practiced this for 1hr along with egg beater and my body was SORE LOL! I just learned to swim at 44yrs old and I’m so proud of myself. I just learned elementary back stroke which I love. Believe it or not I watched a 1hr video 4 times and practice my breathing under water in the tub. It took me 5hrs in the pool but I FINALLY learned to float on my back and stomach, freestyle, swim on my stomach and back with just my legs, and backstroke. Now I’m learning to breathe with freestyle, breaststroke, tread water and butterfly. Breaststroke is HARD especially if your not in shape like me LOL. I’m determined to learn it though and get over my fear of the deep end LOL. I think if I learn to tread water I’ll feel more confident. I’m 5’6 but being in 6ft deep water doesn’t bother me it’s 7 or more because I’ll have a long way to go if I run out of breathe! Yes I know I can just float if I get scared it’s just the thought I guess. I’ve learned you’re never to old to learn something new. Very few people in my family know how to swim. My daughter is 8 and she can be in the pool for HOURS! She just learned as well and can swim in the deep end LOL. Now I REALLY got to get over my fear.

Know this vid's over a year old, but letting you know regardless for that algorithm metric. Going from couch to fit (pandemic pudge crept up). Started out with some 300m freestyle workouts, mixed in back stroke after, all while gnawing on old memories of swim technique. 300m turned into 3500m quickly every other day, "rest" days are 600m with focus on technique and exploration of styles/drills. Butterfly progress has been slow. Not in the same shape I was in highschool, my timing's wonky (watching this to get kick and arm timing visualization) so I keep screwing up about 15m in and repeating to get the feeling correct. First drills were wall kickoff + arrow + 5-6 dolphin kicks (repeated 30x). Next was focus on arms, entering/exiting correctly, proper stroke 2-3x (repeated 15-20x). Adding in breaths and syncing atm, working towards 25m sets, will add flips for 50m sets when comfortable (gym 25m lap pool), but I'm still a bit off. Biggest things so far have been: -26lbs dropped (at that inbetween for fat loss and muscle gain right now) -metabolism respiked... hard. Hunger 24/7 despite nutrition rebalance and filling foods, trying very hard not to eat everything available. As well as body heat, I've turned back into a human furnace, making sleep difficult (literally nude with only a thin sheet, constantly considering concrete/tile floor over bed, still wake up 2x a night hot and hungry.) -muscle tone/definition/cut. Thighs/calves/forearms/shoulders/neck always been muscly bricks, but they're still toning up. Losing my ass again (always do, from bubble to angry looking muscly, sigh.) V-line's coming back. Shoulderblades/upper and mid back popping up again. Stomach's flattening a little. Main reason for switching is for upper arms, chest, and stomach.

Butterfly is all about timing and the arms. You can use fins all year but at some point your going to have to take them off. Deeper butterfly is the way to go too

i’m watching this *at* my swim meet cause i have to do 50 fly, it cant be that bad

Lmao I did the exact same thing the first time I had to do the 50 fly, I just watched a ton of youtube videos on the bus on the way there to try to prepare myself. Now though it's one of my favorite strokes, once you get the feel for it and can do it relatively fast during a race it's such a surreal feeling and it feels almost as if ur actually flying (kinda).

I have to do 50 fly for the first time cause of a school house swim competition. Hopefully it won't be that bad

@@chant-c8503 i’ve done it twice now and i dropped 6 seconds on the second attempt

@@chant-c8503 just try to get a good rhythm going, Tomorrow I'm actually doing the 100 fly barely got onto varsity and I'm just praying I have it in me to finish. I usually have no problem with 50 meters but once i get to like 75 I suddenly just get so exhausted.

i still have the certificate of my training of swimming back when i started swimming at age 7 got to class 9 of 10 of my swiming training butterfly was very hard for me to master and in my own eyes i flaked trying it as best i could but i probably half assed and half perfected it horribly due to butterfly kick/dolphin kick combined with both hands jetting out of the water to do the butterfly stroke with my hands
@Kevin-qj7fp9 ай бұрын
ill say this i enjoyed doing the butterfly kick/dolphin kick underwater i dont even think i have problems with my butterfly kick/dolphin kick (in my own self reflection of how i am doing) its only when i combined it with my hand strokes that i need to time it or something idk i do it horribly i think if i were to reflect on my combined butterfly/dolphin kick with my hand stroke in my eyes it looks like im flailing my body like a dolphin and arc-ing my hands out and in front of me weirdly and trying to time it which idk what im doing

I have the hands and thoracic movements down but my only problem is with the movements of legs.... I unintentionally switch to how we move our legs in breast stroke. I feel like I can go much faster that way and it synchronizes with the upper body movement better.

And do you keep your head under water or you go above water with your head to breath

when you come from a major swimming background, and you watch other athletes (ones that has to do with being in the water) trying to do butterfly youd be telling yourself “well that isn’t right”

Different body types determine different physical movements ...I remember this guy Ron Scott from CLASS and SPPY doing fly in swim practice...he had non graceful form and seemingly inefficient stroke form but was a complete powerhouse when doing fly...Kristine Quance was something else...lapping me doing breaststroke while I was freestyke...embarrassing but then again she is Olympic caliber...so there's that...

Practice with 1 arm and change the pulling arm every 25m. Its also the most annoying style of swimming for everyone around you. It needs plenty of space and generates a sizeable wake. So, dont try it until you got at least 25m for yourself to breath water every second stroke...
