Hydrate - drink water. Just because you are in cool water does not mean you are not sweating - your muscles are working just as hard as running on a treadmill. I stop every 5 laps to drink.

I don’t necessarily agree with a lot of these points for beginner swimmers. I think the most important step is showing up to the pool, taking a lesson with a good coach, and not overthinking your swimwear, stroke technique, or workout plan right away - e.g. you can get away with basic trunks and googles before you put on a skin tight performance level suit. The extra drag is actually good practice for later! Being able to share a lane is important, but everyone can benefit from mixed abilities. Swimming around a slower person and dealing with the ‘chaos’ can make you a better swimmer. Likewise sharing a lane with a skilled swimmer can push you to perform better. Overall this guide is more gatekeepy than informative or encouraging.

I swim a modified backstroke due to hypermobile joints. That's it. The objective is not to move fast, but just to move. I have been looked down on by many for it. I can pass and be passed with the best of them. Not every swimmer trains with speed in mind.
@myswimpro Жыл бұрын
That's ok! Sometimes we equate "speed" with "improvement" - because the better your technique is, the more efficient you will be in the water. Hope that makes sense :)

I am afraid of this too. I'm going to start regularly swimming due to pain from scoliosis/hypermobility. There's a way that I prefer to swim and it's not the freestyle stroke with speed. I feel like im going to annoy people.

In Australia we swim clockwise and lanes are usually marked fast, medium, slow, freestyle only or recreational. If someone taps your toes, that indicates they’re a faster swimmer, so at the end of your lap, stand to the side and let them through. Every pool has lap nazis who think they own the lane which is the equivalent of the school bully…. I shut them down quick smart and they’ll back off once you stand up to them👊

They did a video about it recently. Basically train by breaking it up. So if you want to swim a 200 build to it by doing 4x50 then 2x100 or somethinf

How do you know when to switch up or down a lane? Eg. From slow to intermediate and vise versa
@cotefacekillah Жыл бұрын
Depends whose in the pool with you. If there’s a person blowing by you in your lane and the lane next to you. Maybe offer to switch so the stronger swimmers are together and the weaker ones are too.
@tmsztrsz Жыл бұрын
Look at people in each lane and try to assess where your swimming pace fits. There will be a time when you are too fast for beginners and too slow for faster swimmers. In such case I usually start at faster lane and give 100% for the first part of my swimming, and then move to slower lane to finish in slower pace. But I might be wrong :)

I’m of the same opinion. I’ve been diagnosed with arthritis and recommended to swim. Now I love the water, but I have NO technique😂 The MySwimPro app would be the ideal app to help me. But at £19.99 a month in the UK (last time I checked) it’s beyond my means as I’m on disability payments 😢

I have a lap swimmer for decades now and I SWIM NON-STOP for 30 minutes. Its a great workout. Stopping to catch your breath would not make it a cardio workout. Stop saying its a mistake. Just because its not the "swim team" way to do it doesn't make it a mistake.
@Nomadic_psyche_4 ай бұрын
It would still be cardio if you stop for breaths. It’s just hit training style. Your heart going between different heart rates, still constitutes as a cardio workout out. Just do what’s best for you, but just make sure you’re not putting a strain on your heart!

Obviously! And in Australia 🇦🇺 too 😊

The pool I go to does it both ways. The end lane is marked the slower lane and its clockwise. The middle lane is the fastest but you swim anticlockwise. The final lane is medium and is clockwise. Its not a massive pool

So which lanes are for beginners
@myswimpro Жыл бұрын
It depends on your pool! Some pool will have lanes marked. Some, you just grab a lane.
@tmsztrsz Жыл бұрын
from my observation: usually faster swimmers tend to take middle lanes (3, 4, 5...), and slower swimmers - external lanes (1, 2, ..., 7, 8).

Dude the lanes are for everyone to enjoy. Don't give in to the entitlement mindset of the "elite" swimmer. Pick whichever lane is open and you prefer using. If they're so good at swimming, they should be able to swim in any lane.
@danielcj197823 күн бұрын
I use my local high school pool and fortunate to never have to share a lane. People pay a lot for the YMCA but probably don’t realize their tax dollars already provided a pool for them.
