Hello, I have the doepfer MAQ 16 sequencer as the slave to the TR909 and my problem is that the sequencer is sequencing the drums from the TR909 and I’m not sure how to set the midi from receiving midi information? Any Thoughts would be helpful cheers

I am starting to get my head around how to sync my gear up however one thing that has me stumped is that 2 of my synths have a 1/8" "Clock In" socket where the other 2 only have DIN MIDI in, out + thru sockets. What do I need to do to clock sync them all to the master clock unit? Sequencer/synth/sampler = 1/8" Clock in, MIDI In + MIDI out . Synth #1 = 1/8" Clock in, MIDI in + MIDI Out/Thru (combined). Synth #2 = MIDI in + MIDI out. Synth #3 MIDI in, MIDI out + MIDI thru Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This is a great video! Very helpful! Can you tell is GATE IN good for 808 Trigger outs? (any drum machine trigger out) and can you daisy chain a few CV/GATE synths ?

A Trigger Out signal is only a very short pulse (808 is 20 milliseconds). A Gate In is intended for normal note lengths and is variable in length. So technically you can play very short notes with the Trigger Out, but it's not really meant for that.

Really solid overview of synchronization concepts. Appreciate your work! Quick question, how important is it to make audio connections prior to turning on gear? Most of these manuals say it's important. But is plugging in a clock mono patch cable from a drum machine to a tb-03 while both devices are on really going to meas anything up? Or switching between midi and patch cables while units are switched on - is that actually bad for the hardware?

Glad you like the video. When changing MIDI, CV/Gate or Trigger/Clock cables nothing can happen. Only if you plug audio cables, loud crackling or humming noises may occur and could come out of your speakers very loudly.

Yes, one has to be master and the other has to be slave. I did that with the arpeggiator of my Arturia Keystep for example. Keystep is a good master btw… 😂

So wait, 7:02, is the tr909 triggering the tb303 with midi note data too? Meaning, are the kick highats, etc from tr909 have midi notes that trigger the TB303 midi notes? Or is it just start amd stop midi data? I ask, because I remember hearing some performances somewhere in the early 90s, where the synths were basically repeating the same rhythm as the drum rhythm.

Hello, at 7:02 the TR-909 triggers the TB-03 (not the TB-303) via MIDI. The 909 sends a MIDI clock signal so that both devices run synchronously. In this case, only a start/stop signal and the tempo signal are required. 👍

Hi everyone. I humbly ask the community for help, since I've NEVER been able to sync two or more devices using mini jack sync. I've owned many, including korg volcas, Arturia keystep, etc. Now I've got some second-hand devices: korg Electribe 2 sampler, sonicware Liven LoFi-12, Liven XFM... I've tried a lot of times, since they all have the Sync In and Out ports, and I NEVER did it. I don't understand what is wrong: do I need specific mini jack for sync? Isn't a regular stereo mini jack fitting for this? How can I understand if polarity is right and/or how to set it correctly? Is there a complete guide to start with? Until now I connected the devices using the midi ports, but since I'd like to use them in some cases for other devices such as a midi keyboard, I'd like to set them free and start Syncing, at last. Thanks anyone for helping!

Hey man - Should this work when connecting any two drum machines using a Midi In / Out cable connected between the two?? I have a Roland TR8 and an MFB Tanzbar 2 Analogue drum machine which I want to slave the Tanzbar to the TR8. I will get one of these cables to try it out if that is the case. Cheers,

Hello! Sure, the TR-8 should send a MIDI clock signal and the Tanzbär 2 should be able to receive it without any problems. See pages 18 and 22 of the Tanzbär 2 manual. You need a MIDI cable with at least three poles (1,3,5) occupied. Cheers

I didn't have one of the devices yet, but I think I would use the MIDI output of the Arturia BSP and go to the DIN sync input of the MC-202 via the MIDI->DIN sync converter. The DJ software should be able to send a MIDI clock signal. It can be used to synchronize external devices. But there is so much DJ hardware that I can't say anything specific about it. I think there are a lot of other videos on KZbin about DJ hardware and synchronization, right?

Hi, the video is mainly about the synchronization of the devices. But you want to hear your devices at the same time, so you want to sum up the audio outputs, right? You need one audio channel (maybe stereo) for each device on your audio mixer. So you need a mixing console with more channels.

How about merge ? I want send midi clock from a beatstep pro and a midi keyboard into and midi to CV converter for modular synthesis. The goal is inside this midi/CV converter is an arpeggiator. I can't pass polyphonic midi info through the beatstep pro unfortunately other wise the keyboard would go to the beatstep. Kenton merge box perhaps?

If you want to use two MIDI sources (Beatstep & MIDI Keyboard) and send them to one device (MIDI / CV converter) you need a MIDI interface. I don't know the Kenton Merge Box, but it looks like it was made for such things.

@@DuckTronic Right. I solved the issue. I was stuck on using the clock in on 1 beat resolution. Once I moved the Beastep Pro 24ppq resolution I got the results. Analog clock source into Beatstep in slave mode. Drum Pad #8 analog out into analog clock input on the Midi/cv converter and the Keyboard there as well. This turns out to be much cooler than using the clock output. This way I can hold a chord down or whatever and have a sequenced rhythmic pattern to play the arpeggiator. and it's in time with the sequencer.

No, the D.A.W only sends a MIDI clock signal to a MIDI Clock to DIN Sync converter. (I build the free and very cheap d.i.y. converter from colin fraser, like shown at 6:29 in the video. You can find the link in the description.) This converter sends the tempo via DIN Sync to the TR-808. The beat was programmed on the internal sequencer of the TR-808. If you need, there are various MIDI modifications available to send MIDI notes from a sequencer to the TR-808 and to trigger the instruments.

Hello, I guess this isn't working. Or very badly. The 16th Midi Clock is converted to 24th for DIN Sync and delivers only the tempo signal for the whole pattern. I don't use Ableton, so I don't know if Ableton can send a swinging MIDI clock. Just try around. Maybe it will work reasonably well.

Yes, via MIDI you should be able to synchronize all devices easily. Check the manuals to see if you need to set up the devices for MIDI synchronization beforehand.

Get or make a MIDI thru box Use the dr 770 as master and send midi out to the thru box and then from its multiple outputs to the volca midi ins Most midi thru boxes have 4 or 5 outputs and are pretty cheap
