As a kid, I learned tunes by playing the record over 100 times. That was the way it was back then. When I went to college, still the same way. But learning jazz tunes or solos was incredibly hard. So fast forward to now, I learn tunes or solos by slowing down the tunes using a ‘slowdowner’ app called Anytune which has been great. And just before I saw this video, I realized to learn any jazz music is to use numbers, and sometimes solfège. So I’m doing better. I break down small fragments, usually one bar at a time(another nugget of information fromChad). Thanks, Chad, for your teachings. 😊

I’d love to understand how you eventually get from thinking about the numbers to playing more by ear (or by flow as you called it). Once I start with the numbers, I can’t seem to get away from them.

Great question! This is just a portion of the course, but in other content Chad describes how the numbers themselves develop your ears. Hearing a pitch as the "3rd" gives a label and organizational system to the sound itself so we can identify it when we hear it, the same way labeling the color "red" allows us to identify the color when we see it. Eventually, it becomes second nature, and we don't have to consciously recall the number when we hear the pitch, the same we don't need to consciously recall the label of a color when we see it in front of us.
